You're a great instructor Thomas. I'm about to do this with my 1999 Chevy C/K 3500 with a 5.7 V8 Vortex, so I was happy to find your video.
Cost me 150 for a trans flush, plus 30$ for the gasket and filter, plus tax, so i end up with about 200$ total, and i really appreciate this video, very detailed! Thank you. Perfect.
I love your videos, and your no-nonsense methods! I never would have thought to clean a pan with dirt, but it works like a charm! Thank you for your help!
Good video, I actually do this for a living professionally and have to say, you've done an awesome job explaining step by step
+zyplex1 thanks for your kind comments, and thanks for watching.
Thank you for your informational video. I just purchased a 99 Chevy Express 3500 5.7 It has 212,000 MI. I believe it will go a lot further I've always changed my own oil. Now with this video I'm going to attempt the transmission filter! Thanks again!!
Your trick with the dirt works AMAZINGLY WELL. You helped me a lot and made me take care of something I dreaded. Great details and information
The dirt idea is brilliant. If you're a cat owner, I would imagine kitty litter might work well, too.
Great video... thanks!
cheapest transmission I could find was $1,800 I bought a rebuild kit hundred fifty bucks a rebuilt torque converter$ 60 and transmission fluid I'm at 10,000 miles on it and still running works great saved a lot of money TH-cam Save Me $$$$.
don't be afraid to get dirty !
great vid Rock on ☆
Where did you building instructions?
Your cleaning method with dirt is not stupid at all, it’s just the primitive way of having the job done. Good video.
Dude I love this video. You're a lifesaver! I have a 96 Chevy S10 I'm going to change the transmission fluid on. This will be my first time tackling it. Initially I thought the job would be complicated to do but it looks easy. Thanks so much for the video.
How did it work out for u cause my transmission fuild just as black as his and now it won't shift at all so I know I need to definitely do this to my 98 chevy blazer
@@tweezyyoutube he dropped the transmission on himself and died
@@MacAutoDiagoh damn RIP Briandd 😢let this be a lesson to y'all be careful when changing that tranny fluid!
Edit: I wonder if the s10 made it through that terrible ordeal or if it suffered the same fate 🤔 maybe Brian and his s10- just like a trusty steed were laid to rest together... or maybe the truck was used as a coffin? Hey that's not a bad idea! When I go I'd like to be buried in my old chevy k1500! With a full tank of premium, tuned up and a fresh oil change- mobil 1 of course. Might as well have a new set of tires on her too. I'll take some a/t 10 ply shoes. Oh and my stereo HAS to be 100% working this part is important. A new paint job too for good measure and I reckon those new tires could use some attention, hit those babies up with some wax, make em shine. Gotta look good, no? Then I should be ready to hit the road in the afterlife. Did I just start a new trend?
It's easy to see you know what you're talking about. You covered it all including saving diy peeps unnecessary expense. I never thought of using dirt and have
never used solvents to clean in the interest of saving money. Paper towels have worked for me and that about rinsing with water and drying it thoroughly with a rag,; there's nothing better.Thank you.
Thanks my pan just started leaking and was about to have it towed to a shop. This will save me money to fix the ac next
Thanks for the cleaning tip. That's how I clean burnt pots and pans by the riverside. Very effective.👍.
That was real helpful for a person that don't know nothing bout fixing cars and truck
Excellent! I have 90' GMC 2500, did a flush & fill 40,000 miles ago, fluid is getting dark. I'm going to be changing it shortly, it shifts fine, no problems, I want to keep it that way. Great Video!
+John Councilman
thanks for watching.
the cigarette butt is the key to good clean pan. Great video. I left the old filter grommet in and then put the new filter in with a new grommet. Didn't think about it til 500 miles later and had to do it all over again.
crap, now you're an expert! thanks for watching!
Hey fella ..everyones entitled to their opinion, just like myself. I think you have done an outstanding job educating us on a simpler way to get it done quick and efficient. Job well done thnx....
Thank you Thomas. You are AWSOME. You educated me and helped me save money God bless you.
Man, this one of the best videos I have come across on chevy trans filter and fluid change. Thanks for being informative and detailed. Looking forward to more videos.
+angelo hearns your very kind, thank you for the great comments.
I have never seen someone clean a pan like that. but it turned out great!!
I like the fact that you say it like it is. The little tricks of the trade. You made me chuckle a few times. I have a '99 Tahoe and am trying to figure out what has been leaking on the garage floor. I just wish I was a bit more limber to slide underneath with the creeper. Thank you.
if you have a wall mirror, you can slide it under and shine a flash light at it, ive had to do that before. thanks for watching.
Never would have thought of that...thank you!
yeppers, good luck. thanks for the comments, and for watching.
I’ve watched a few trans fluid/filter replacements. This is a good one. Clear instruction and good tips.
About to do this on my 98 Chevy with the 5.7 and this video helps a ton! Thanks for putting this out there! :)
Dude thank you so much! I have a 98 Chevy Silverado 5.7 Vortec and this video helped tremendously.
Using dirt to clean the pan is great! Makes sense, it is all natural and there are many cleaners out there that actually use dirt or "earth" in them. Awesome man, please keep doing videos!!
You sir, are a smart man, and a straight shooter. My type of guy. I'd buy you a beer anytime!
I Can't Believe how clean that pan is after the dirt method.
Ypu can always tighten but can never untighten!! Great video!👑
Helpful...replacing my shift solenoids today..ty for the video
That actually was a neat truck with the dirt to absorb the excess oil in the pan👍
thanks for watching.
I have a 96 vortec going to do this. Using dirt is smart best cleaning tool to use because u can always clean up dirt. Hoping to be picking up a 2005 vortec suburban soon. Thank you for your video.
perfect, 2005, nice. thanks for watching.
Great video! I’ll be doing this very soon ... your thorough explanation is much appreciated
Nice job Thomas! I like the simple cleaning method you used and good explanations given!
“Just gonna give it a little tap here” hits the trans filter like the hulk hahahha jkjkjk great video man I like the dirt technique I’ve never seen that before but I tried it out and it works damn good. Thanks a lot brother I appreciate yuh for the help
Thank you for this video. This video sure showed me alot and help me do a transmission flush and filter change on my car. i watched it several times so that when I got under the car I knew what to do. Took the fear out of doing the job myself thinking i was going to do something wrong and ruin my transmission or that it would leak. I tightened the gasket just like you said and no leaks what so ever and transmission is functioning perfectly. Thank you .
perfect, great job. thanks for watching.
This is a really good video. Very helpful the dirt is the best . God really supplies all of our needs
Thanks bud. This is gonna come in handy. I have to change mine tommorrow. Wish me luck
good luck, your gonna do great!!! thanks for watching.
@chris Simmons how you do buddy?im going to do mine first time
Thank you for another great video, I bought a 1998 GMC Sierra K1500, that needs a lot of TLC, not sure what the other owners have done or not done, so your videos have helped me a lot, Thanks for sharing
you got it, thanks for watching jeff !!
Hey boss your AWESOME ! My 87 blazer k5 was sitting for so long because of this problem and you just helped me fix it keep making videos!
Thank u sir i just bought my first chevy its a older tahoe this made me feel alot better doing it 👍
Thank you for all of your helpful suggestions. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this video! Performed this with confidence! Thanks for the tip on how to not overtighten!
Anything back in the day were great cars and trucks. Basically bulletproof. They don’t make them like the used to anymore sadly. I have a 97 Toyota Camry with original engine and transmission that is still going strong.
Thanks for your good lesson, and transmission is looking so clean inside and outside
Great Video and step by step how to. It really calmed my anxiety of doing it myself. Much appreciated!
ha perfect, thanks for watching.
great video, getting ready to change my fluid on my 1999 GMC has 86000, looks like new
Great video !!!
1999 Chevy Tahoe 167.000 mi.
Question: when stopped with shifter on drive, try to accelerate, first starts slow then jumps why?
Awsome great job got a question i bought a 1999 chvy blazer sl it has 342,000 miles they never changed the filter i was told to filter the old fluid and put it back in transmission add 1qt trans x told me if i added new fluids i will start slipping is that true?
Awesome vid , straight out & honest , & that's how u get the job done ! 👍
thank you for such a great tutorial. this will be my first time changing a transmission filter, and you gave a lot of explanations i believe i really needed.
great ! i am sure you will do it with no problems, keep us posted on how it went and if you ran into any different issues. thanks for watching.
Awesome video , question how do you feel about using parts cleaner after dropping the pan instead of wiping with a cloth. I haven’t tried it yet but I’m experiencing a hesitation when putting in reverse. My 99 never had a flush so I’m excited about getting this done. Thanks again!
Awesome Vid dude..! LOVE the dirt- You are now "DIRTMAN.."!
Great Vid! you might wanna change out that air filter too!
When the fluid is that dirty, I usually add a quart of Lucas trans fix. Replace the dirty sludge with clean new red sludge.
That's a good idea
Thanks man, this helped a bunch. I'm waiting on parts to do this, along with all bushings & ball joints, shocks, etc.
perfect, click on my name under this video and scroll down to what you need, i have videos on ball joints, bushings etc. just about everything on this same chevy. thanks for watching.
MacGyver has nothing on you.👍🏻
I've used the dirt trick too.👍🏻 Very effective and dirt cheap.👍🏻
I changed mine, brand new pan with drain plug (98 yukon 4l60e) Rubber gasket with filter kit leaked. Felpro fiber gasket split at several bolt holes. Even torqued to recommended 9 ft lbs and cant seam to beat the leak or get a gasket to go on without splitting or leaking. Last stop is cork and hope it works
ping the bolt holes, with cork, only do about 7 lbs
Ping them? Its a brand new pan, im just using cork as my last option because others havent worked out so well in my case. Even replaced dipstick tube seal as it had a small seep.
you tried with rubber, now the new pan you have you will be trying cork, there fore it has been used at least once. you always ping the holes if it has been used, even once.
yes, blown up. the air bubbled went and I assume the air went inside the ingen. i put the thermo. out of the seal. while the seal has to be around. do i need to put the seal back around?
Mine takes a longer to shift when driving and when in park when I go to drive it the shifter is kinda hard. Will this fix it just got the vehicle trans fluid is dirty damn near orange lol and help is appreciated 1999 gmc Yukon Denali 4x4
Man, your an excellent instructor.
You are the BEST...I did it in your way....You are the man.
+Hallo
thats awe some, i love when i hear people did it and saved the money, money, money. thanks a bunch for watching. thanks again hallo!
+thomas brian It is My pleasure..
Thank you very helpful... changed filter and oil on my chevy cargo van. First time.
I have a e3500 work van with a 5.7, this still helps.
Very good job explaining the change out process!
@11:58 Im loving the homemade wooden car ramp. I bet it'll hold up a semi 🤔
Awesome video definitely give me a lot more confidence in doing this! I’m glad I watched this before paying someone else $150
Sawdust works too. And I always add another magnet or three.
Nice video... I did this job last week but 3rd gear gives me a problem from time to time slipping ...
i have a new to me 2000 Cadillac Escalade with the 5.7 vortec and when searching for the necessary parts on line come across the question..is it a regular or a deep pan ...other than it may require more fluid for the deep pan , is the gasket and filter the same? how would l know if l have a deep pan? i would hate to have the wrong parts when l have it all apart. Great video BTW!
Excellent dude ! Thanks , I am about to tackle this job right now !
thanks for watching!
I have a 1999 Silverado pickup and all at once I don't have reverse and I have never had any problems with it at all in the past? When it is real cold sometimes it would shift up kind of slow till it warmed up alittle but other than that always works great! Do you suppose the filter could be causing all my problems? Since I have lost my reverse gear it rapes a lot higher before it shift in my forward gears now also! What do you think? 2wheel drive
Pickup at a 5.3 liter Vortex engine!
That pan looked beautiful. Good way to do it!
and saved money ha, thanks for watching.
Awesome...watched this then did this...and yes it worked great pan came out looking good....2 thumbs up
great video I've got a 1990 k1500 with 700R4 getting ready to change mine!
Thank you for the detail in this video. Excellent job
Glad it was helpful!
Great video bro, I was about to do my brothers 94 Tahoe. This video really helped a lot thanks again..
+omar cisneros great, thanks for the comments.
I just changed mine today and now it wont shift at all not sure what happened
Maybe I didn't but enough fluid back in? 🤷♂️
Amazing video ! Ok so I'm not sure what type of fluid I should get my 2000 5.7 tahoe planning on doing this job on the neglected turd (has 156k ) the previous owners haven't done anything to it ... I did the plugs and they were stock from 2000....
The stepped pan is the deep pan. You have a pan with no step. Mine is the 1999 tahoe 2 door with z71 package if that matters.
I did this procedure about four years ago and it worked out well except for I was hoping the 4l60e in my 1998 1/2 ton pickup would shift a bit softer from 1st to 2nd when cold. What causes this hard shifting while it's cold?
fluid is to thick. your 1st to second shift solenoid could be dirty or clogging up a bit. you can try a cleaner, but in my experience changing the solenoid is the true fix. amazon sells all five pretty cheap. of course your gonna be doing that service again. ha. but they are all accessible. copy and paste this link to amazon. thanks for watching.
Transmission Solenoid Valve,5PCS Heacy Duty Metal & Plastic Transmission Solenoid Valve Kit Fits for GM Products 4L60E
@@thomasbriansavingmoney Very good. Thank you TB
great Video. My 2001 Tahoe would have cost me $220 to have serviced. Wth your video I did it for $35
+Gottalosethisnow that's fricken awesome. its all about the saving of money. i love to hear that. thank you for your comment and for watching. if you know of anyone that
can benefit from watching this video can you click share and share it
with them. i am trying a little experiment with sharing. again thank you
for all your support. i will keep you posted on how its working. thanks
again.
Is it the same for a 98 chevy blazer my oil is that black color as well and I know it's clog up and I need to do what u did cause mys won't shift at all also what the tool call I can buy to get those bots off
Love the video man. Got anything on the mode door actuator. I think that's what it's called the one on the driver side. Any tricks on that. Followed one video and winded up damaging the blend door one and had to take it in. Dont want to do that again. Have a 99 Silverado 1500. TIA
I have a heat shield between the exhaust pipe and all the bolts on the passenger side of my pan, makes taking those bolts out a pain in the ass.
thanks for the cleaning tip it was aprecaite it
you got it, but a huge thanks to you for watching.
So I have a 1996 Chevy gladiator van . I start it up and it turns off . I look on the odometer and the battery needle fluctuates up and down . Not only that but when I put it in gear it jerks back and the brakes are locked. Same thing when I put it in d . I have to put it in park just to stop it . Can u help me . What’s this problem sound like . Maby transmission needs to be replaced ?
Pretty sweet video. My only question is how are you sure that the filter seal is properly seated? Mine was a absolute dog to get out and just couldn't imagine the taps used provided the seating. Is it that big of a deal being the pan supports the filter up?
I had my transmission fluid changed and filter replaced. I checked under the 99 Tahoe today and saw there was a leak in the trans. Fluid. Is it possible it’s too tight? Would loosening it up a bit stop the leak potentially?
if you can do good idea to install drain plug while doing and replace sensors they are easy to do
great video ive had great luck with these vortec also my question is my gasket holes are the same size as the pan so can i use some rvt sealer to hold the gasket or something and the filter doesnt have that rubber gasket on it thanks
Hey can you clean the valve covers the same way???. ... uh just asking for a friend...
I have a 1999 Silverado three door extended cab. could you make a video to show how to stow the jack under the back seat ? I for the life of me cannot get it back under there correctly
Not a bad idea the dirt/gravel idea I think I'll borrow Your idea however I might use kitty litter ...think that would work? Maybe sand?
I enjoyed the video. It had great formation. Do you have any videos or information on transmission issues involving shifting. Mine stopped shifting d 35 mph. Reverse is fine. I change the 2 shift solenoids while following your video for filter change and oil change. Still doesn't shift. There were no metal particles in the oil or pan. It look similar to yours on the video. K1500 1997 GMC Suburban 5.7 liter. Any suggestions other than a rebuild?
click on my name under the video for those videos, huge list. thanks for watching.
Great video, thanks for the clear and detailed video!
I have the exact same vehicle and followed your tutorial exactly, dirt and all. 3 days later my transmission filter fell out and I lost all gears. After doing much more research I found that Transmission torque converter clutch cannot engage without 125psi of fluid, from transmission pump and if the filter is loose pressure is off, variable and you will have slippage, hesitation, even rpm oscillation above 30mph. If it falls out completely ur stuck. IMPORTANT, TAP FILTER SEAL INTO PLACE COMPLETELY (SOCKET&HAMMER) BEFORE INSERTING FILTER (HAMMER)
actually it takes very little pressure to install it. but you make sure that the old seal is out, or you will double stack it. and it will fall down. im sorry about your situation that stinks.
Thanks . Could a dirty or clogged transmission filter cause the transmission to not shift right? I ask because my truck was running great before I parked it. I left it sitting for a week, I started up and went for a drive and the that's when I notice it started acting up. My speedometer wasn't working so I turn back around to the house, checked the fluid. I notice it was low and the stick was a little dirty. It wasn't metal shaving though. So do you think by putting in a new filter and fresh fluid will fix it?
the chevy in the video had that prob once, it ended up i had low voltage in the battery, you may want to check your alternator output. it was charging, but not keeping up an i had shifting issues and my speed odometer did the same thing. just a thought. however clean tranny fluid and filter can always help shifting issues. thanks for watching.
How do you do this when there's a cross member in the way
Thank you. Can you replace the valve body without removing the transmission.
After some research I think you can
yes you sure can.
You said that the 99 5.7 has a shallow pan, but that's a deep pan on your truck. I think you meant to say deep instead at 2:05. It's my understanding that deep replaced shallow on all the 4L60E tranny's around 1997.
Good job! I have a 1995 Chevrolet 1 ton RV 454 engine! One of the pan bolts is buried under a steel frame support beam! Have you come across this and got a solution?
