This was a tough journey of discovering what had actually happened! You will see me confused at the beginning as to what the actual tragedy was but eventually I find out more details and full understanding of it. Rest in Peace to all those precious lives and condolences to their families! Borahae 💜

EDIT: I didn't realize you watched both explainers, not just the Italian one. I prefer to recommend the "meaning of" video that is more focused on the imagery and source materials of the actual music video and how they relate to the ferry disaster as well as to other losses. In my opinion, it is a much less traumatic experience to learn about the song that way, and underscores the meanings hidden in the video and its emotional content. When I first watched the Italian Army explainer, it made me incredibly disgusted and angry at the government and the crew, but I don't think either the song or the video is meant to inflame anger, but to mourn the tragedy.

Baepsae is said to be one of their most political songs. Talks about the N Po Generation. One of my favorite songs. Live with English subtitles is a must see. The dance practice is good too. Spine Breaker is another one.

RM had to say it like that it's open to interpretation, because that president was still in office and RM as well as all of BTS could have been blacklisted otherwise. The same can be applied for BTS 2013 debut songs !No More Dream' as well as later that yr 'N.O' where with in these songs they speak up for all the disenfranchised who don't have a voice of their own to stand up against oppression, from society, even ones own parents, yo live ones own dreams, stand up for your own dreams, never give up. So many don't realize that back then BTS was taking a chance speaking up in these songs, because indeed they could have gotten blacklisted like so many other artists had been.

Many Koreans were depressed and traumatized for a long time because of the disaster. But they were just sad or angry and couldn't stay still. I went out on the streets for several months until spring, raising my voice and crying out to reveal the truth of the disaster. At that time, the president had no interest in saving the people from the disaster, but used it politically, discussed and decided on state affairs with a woman close to her personal relationship, and she was only interested in pursuing personal interests.
At the time of the Sewol ferry disaster, President Park was the daughter of a president who had been in dictatorship several decades ago and was supported by conservative groups. During the dictatorship, the generation that experienced rapid social development at the expense of many working-class people after the Korean War. They missed President Park Chung-hee and believed that his daughter would do well, but she only cares about her appearance and has no interest in victims. Celebrities who mentioned the Sewol ferry at the time were put on a blacklist and put at a disadvantage.
Critics of the regime were blacklisted and treated unequal. BTS was hated by the government at the time for comforting and donating to the families of the victims of the disaster. After that, the angry people held candlelight protests for several months, and in that cold winter, millions of citizens peacefully protested the president and impeached the president.
Park Geun-hye, who was sentenced to imprisonment after trial and spent several years in prison, was recently released from prison because of her health.
I hope this never happens again anywhere else.

The young lady for Italian ARMY even traveled to South Korea in order to meet with some of the families and volunteers. She really dove into this project in order to get the truth out.
Thank you for such a wonderful reaction to a difficult and tragic event. You can probably understand now why this song is call "The Queen" and still remains on the charts.
BTS has since sung this song for ARMY. To show that they miss us And to help consol those that have lost loved ones due to this horrible pandemic. They are letting us know that we are not alone.
I love and respect all the good that BTS does, but having the courage as kids, to step up and provide the world hope in our darkest days, it is encouraging and inspirational. I Purple 💜 BTS

I was in Korea when this happened and again a couple of years later. It was the most heartbreaking time. So much media was “controlled” by the government of the time. The details were not reported accurately and that only came to pass as time went on. I still recall to this day standing on the side of the road in Seoul watching hundreds of people, family members and friends of those who lost their lives, carrying pictures of their deceased children, protesting to try and get the answers they were due. I could do nothing but cry as I watched these brave people, even 2 years on, trying to get answers. It broke my heart. The government of the time was so corrupt, and they eventually paid the price, but the fact that all of those children passed so unnecessarily will haunt me until me end. When you watch the explanation, it puts a completely different view on the MV. The boys took a huge risk with this song - they could have received so much backlash for speaking out against the injustice, but that is what BTS does.

Regarding BTS' donation to the families of the victims of the Sewol tragedy...this happened when BTS was still a relatively new group...still struggling to make a name for themselves in the music industry...so a 100 million won at that time must have been quite a big amount for them! Yet they wholeheartedly (and secretly) donated a big part of their earnings to the victims' families! Makes me love and admire the boys even more!💜💜💜

The video where we heard the captain of the ship order the students to stay inside the cabins, is actually a video call from a student to his parents while the ship sank, imagine this feeling! It must have been desperate!
With this MV, BTS ended up not only sending a message of comfort to the families, but also giving a worldwide view of the incident, which I think is very important! It's these details that showed me little by little that they were really different and necessary, even if one day they stop, they will surely leave a mark.

BTS doesn't waste a single detail to convey their music and message. What may seem insignificant to some is a deep reference. And so, BTS was concerned about the suicide rate of the youth with all the pressure, thus Love Yourself. I don't believe any other Kpop group expresses the needs and emotions of people better than BTS or world wide either.

Thank you for reacting to these. I think it is important to point out this:
RM and Yoongi both wrote this song thinking about lost friend(s). It is about their feeling of loss…
So it is important to note the song itself can be interpreted however one would like.
However the Music Video is theorized but with a lot of evidence (and BTS basically hinted at it but they can’t fully confirm due to government) that the music videos is about the tragedy…
This is also why BTS shouldn’t be considered a boyband.

The corrupt president of Korea at that time of the Ferry disaster in 2014 was taking payola from many huge corporations. In the case of this ferry it also was illegally used as a cargo ship carrying 1,000's of tons more of cargo than it was supposed to plus in dire need of repair. All this was overlooked and that was part of the coverup. Talking about this incident could get you blacklisted so that was one of the reasons RM did not want to explicitly talk about what exactly the song was about!
The song was written, several years after the incident. Since the songs release that president actually finally got impeached! The Sewol Tragedy was one of the reasons and sort of the beginning of the end for her! She was actually impeached ironically about the same time that Trump became president! So in Korea now things are changing now with first their new President Moon Jae In at the time, who actually supports BTS and what they are doing and the causes they represent! Now there is another new President Joon.
There are even more symbolic associations connected with the Sewol Tragedy in the song then mentioned! BTS donated money to the grieving families and their charities even before the song came out but like other times when they give donations or charity they try to keep it quiet but the media inevitably finds out anyway.
Also concerning songs RM Also likes to not be 100% explicit in what they're about so to leave it to what each individual believes it to be! Just like all art is in the interpretation of the individual as well! As for Spring Day it could just be about loss or just missing someone if that works best for the individual listening to it!
Also even the choreography has everything to do with the sinking of the ferry like when the members form the bow of the ship while the rest is sunk. It's the part when Tae/V is moving away from the rest and sings your my best friend. They also are continually dancing to and fro back and forth like they were on a ship capsizing that the waves are making go back and forth. They are also wearing billowing shirts that almost look like sails of a ship or also waves! Jimin, the one with pink hair is reaching out like trying to be saved or comforted. Most of their choreography from other songs as well are usually connected to what their songs are about!

This MV and the explanations have introduced so many people to the Sewol ferry tragedy and the truth of what actually happened. I don't consider people being "late" to knowing about it. I consider them honoring the wishes of the survivors and making sure that the victims are never forgotten. The more people who learn about what happened, the more people who remember the lost souls.

I think the Sewol Donation was not included in BTS' introduction because it was just recently comfirmed that they actually donated. Before it was just theories/assumptions that BTS was referencing Sewol tragedy at the time. And as was mentioned in the video, many artists were blacklisted for supporting the families of the victims. But they still risked it and secretly donated even if they were just a starting group back then. Also, add the fact that BTS don't really publicize their donations.

I read/heard about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy in 2014, before seeing BTS' video( in 2017) and as an Army Mom cried/sobbed my heart out. My son was 14 yrs old when the ferry sank and hearing that message left by a boy who was close in age on his cell phone to his Mom. Telling her that the ship was sinking. They were told to stay in place and he realised that he would likely drown with over two hundred of his class mates - BROKE me - as he said a final good-bye to her. I did not make the connection between Spring Day and Sewol until the Italian Army did such an amazing video which again...brought me to tears. Thank you to each and every one who continues to help the world see how important 'Spring Day' is to the parents/survivors and S.Korea. I believe it will always stand as the Number One most important message and video by BTS and if not mistaken...read somewhere that Spring Day is still on the S.Korean charts to this day. May all those students who lost their lives rest in peace. Bless. Ps. I would like to send prayers to the family of one of the first Coast Guard divers who worked day n night to retrieve bodies and when he realized how easily this tragedy could've been averted....and the inaction of his then government sealed these young people's fate - he committed the 'S' word. May you also rest in peace, Sir. Your valiant actions in the first 48/plus hrs have been seen around the world and you will ALWAYS be a hero. 💜💜💜💜

This mv and the incidents it shows really reminds you of the fleeting nature of life. There's no time to keep malice with others, there's no time to quarrel and to be the cause of someone else's pain and suffering (even if you feel what you say is of little value). The point is, you never know when time will run out for you. So be good to those you can, show love to people around you, care for them, be kind. These are the only things that are going to leave a lasting impression. Not the money, nor the records, nor the fame.
Money runs out, you won't take it with you as you leave the earth, records are always gonna be broken, and you'll end up just being "one of the people who...", etc.
The world is broken, but I believe we all carry something that could help patch it. Selfishness is sinking our world, just like it did the Sewol ferry. But we could fix it. 🙏
"Spring Day" is one of my favourite BTS songs. It really makes you sit down and think ❤

I hope you to listen to “am I wrong”, bts is of course, as well as of Sewol ferry and the action against the government, including the donation to the bereaved family received a lot of pressure from governments, the media at the time. (And that donation is more meaningful than when BTS was successful like now)
Nevertheless, “I say something wrong?” is “am I wrong” and appearing not to give. As a Korean mother of children, I salute the seven boys who bravely raised their hands when everyone was silent at the time.
Korean People know that it was a very burdensome decision for a small idol group of a small company at that time.

As a teacher, this song and the story of the tragedy always make me cry. I watched the documentary of a reporter covering what actually happened. Uncovering the truths and rallying with the parents who have lost their children. If I'm not mistaken, this reporter did all of that independently because he was fired when he insisted on reporting about it. I pray for peace for the victims' souls and comfort for their family.

There is a video out on TH-cam with the divers who went in to recover bodies and belongings. It is so sad. One committed suicide because of what he saw down there. It was horrible. I can't remember what the video was called.

As an illustrator I know there's enough references in the MV to know for sure there are speaking about the Ferry even if they themselves cant say it... and that kinda help with the symbolism of everything else... but the interpretation of the specific scenes can be up to anyone that has all that information...
Also, It always amazed me when people get puzzle with the shoes hanging... for me it was an universal thing that ment someone die (or a point for selling drugs but that doesn't applie here 😂)
Italian Army made an amazing job at separating the references and their own interpretation

Thank you for this reaction. Italian Army review always makes me so upset but I watched you anyway. If you are interested to more interesting content with BTS watch Am I Wrong and the fact that they risked being Black Listed but you will see that they encapsulate a tough message with very cute sounding song and choreo (watch live...the original includes dog-like movements) and you can see explanations...also Go Go a cute song and cute choreo with deep meaning. Of course many of their songs have deep meanings...continue to enjoy!

I was right - when I see these parents, their anguish is impossible to fathom, and so hard to see 🥲💔
They were just children, still at school…When this happened in April 2014, Jimin and Tae had just graduated high school, like a month before, and Jungkook was still at school - this hit close to home for BTS and Big Hit, it’s such a typical school field trip. Not only were children wantingly exposed to danger, but they were abandoned by the people who were supposed to protect them (the captain and crew) and ignored by those who should have tried to save them (coast guard), and forgotten by those who should have sought Justice for them (police). It was left to their families, and ordinary citizens to not give up, to make sure that the right people were held accountable. It took time, but they helped bring the President down, and she went to jail, at least in part because of this (she was impeached and sent to prison for corruption and abuse of power, the first president of Korea to ever be held accountable in this way). But the core of this, for me, is that these were children - I would not know how to continue to live if I had a child and lost them, especially in such a manner. Seeing the pain of these parents destroys me. I can see it had a similar effect on you - anyone with decency and humanity would be appalled and heartbroken by this tragedy, and the more people know about it, the less likely anything similar is to happen again elsewhere. Thank you for giving this your time and attention. 🙏💜💜

Hola!
Hello! A few days ago, the algorithm brought you to this screen and I liked the content. This is the first time I've seen your reaction to this version and interpretation of Spring Day. I am ARMY 🇦🇷 56 years old and we are still affected by this tragedy that was clearly not publicized at the time, due to the interests of the power of those who manipulate information at a global level. I must tell you that at first I was angry at your lack of knowledge of the subject, but then I understood that, like in much of the world, this was not known and precisely because it is not convenient for the negligence and lack of scruples of many governments to go viral, which in they are allies because they have corruption in common. Your final analysis was accurate and important, since it is the correct message of what ALL citizens of this planet must enforce if we do not want to be slaves to a despotic, tyrannical and authoritarian system. . AS ALWAYS, MY SINCERE HEARTFUL RESPECTS TO THE AFFECTS OF THE VICTIMS. TO THOSE WHO LEFT IN THE SHIPWRECK AND THOSE WHO DECIDED TO LEAVE LATER BECAUSE OF NOT ENDORSEING THE PAIN, I WISH YOU HAVE FOUND THE LIGHT THAT LIGHTENS YOUR PATH TO THE PEACE YOU DESERVE 🎗️🕯️🌹💜

The tragedy was on a ferry not a train. It was some sort of school field trip and the ferry started to sink I'm not sure why and instead of evacuating the students the adults fled the ship and told the students to stay put when actually the first evacuation priority should be the children and alot of children drowned and the government and media didnt handle the situation right and alot of families lost their lived ones. This is a just the basics on what happened it goes deeper.

So heads up the Snowpiercer movie wasn't that great it was just missing something (the movie is on Netflix) but there is now a series I haven't watched yet but I'm told its amazing. My brother is watching it on Netflix but its not available on Netflix in the states but it is on HBO Max its also a book so if you would rather read I've been told the book is amazing it is in Korean but I assume they have an English version

BTS are extremely sympathetic sensitive respectful young men. If you will notice most of their music is centered on injustices. Just think if the young people who died that day had not listened to the olde people they would likely have survived. Pay close attention to BTS lyrics. They are very poignant and deep. You may be interested in why BTS is not treated fairly in Korea. It is on TH-cam. This song is hard for me to listen too knowing the background. An example of one reason why I love BTS.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I really appreciate that you did a full reaction to the story, even watching different interpretations of the MV. As RM said, everyone is free to understand how they want and you were perfect in every statement you made.
About not mentioning this donation in the introduction video you reacted before, I believe the majority doesn't know about the Sewol Ferry so they would need to make an introduction about this before talking about the donation, whilst the BLM had a bigger visibility in recent days. Also, if I remember correctly, they mentioned it especially to highlight how ARMY engage in different causes following BTS positive examples (1 million dollars in 24h is a record).
ARMY is always making new content as ways to showcase the amazing artists and human beings that BTS is made of. I believe the world needs good examples like them. When they don't need to be perfect, even though a lot of people think they should, but still can be informed and learn and grow....
