Hey everyone! We know that a lot of you requested the explanation by Italian Army, and while we really wanted to give that to you guys, it was a bit hard to follow with all the other stuff going on, hence the reaction to the video by Bulletproof Vibes instead. That does not mean that we don't take your suggestions into consideration, just that we need to watch the video when we have a better mental capacity to focus on what is going on within the video. I promise we will DEFINITELY be watching and reacting to the 'Italian Army' explanation at some point in the near future and posting it separately. Thank you for understanding!

I'm really glad that you'll watch the one from Italian ARMY as well. I personally disagree with a lot of Bulletproof Vibes' conclusions because the analysis is done without putting the scenes into context. Also, it doesn't explain the political turmoil that ensued nor why this was a *huge* risc for BTS to take.
(In short I *really* don't like BV's video, but I do understand why you'd hold off on IA's. 😢)

I am glad that you will watch it because the history of the incident is so much more. The coast guard was actually preventing rescues and corruption was found all the way up to the then President Park. The Explanation by Italian ARMY is the most in depth and worth the watch. She even traveled to South Korea and visited with the families of the victims.
There is Another Explanation that focuses on the mv and hidden meanings. The song itself is about loss, grief, and coming to terms with the memories. But the mv is a tribute to the Sewol Tragedy.

The government at that point was so bad that there was a literal 'black list' of artists that were considered 'subversive'. BTS creating this song and the video was an enormous risk for their career. But they cared more about justice than about success.

This is the queen of all BTS songs. It's a controversial BTS song in Korea and a brave song as well. It's not just a beautiful song but its also a beautiful tirbute that can be passed on to generations to generations. For sure this means a lot to the survivors and most especially to the victims and their families. Though BTS has never really admitted that this song is in referenced to that tragedy, Jin has once admitted through an interview that the song is about an event but has not disclosed "what event" was that.
This song has been in the Korean hit chart up to now since it's released and never goes out and every spring it just goes up. BTS are not just making beautiful music but they are also using their platform to raise awareness about society, injustices, racism relevant issues and all through their music

You have reacted to Spring Day MV with such respect and understanding that I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster.. I would like you (and everyone) to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 15 months ago..........
"I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?.
Feeling depressed, having suicidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things.
The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve
    - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident."
I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message.💜
The New Yorker has a heartbreaking documentary on the disaster that explains with footage exactly what happened th-cam.com/video/5_A8dq2fA5o/w-d-xo.html
The worst thing about the disaster - the captain and crew fled the ship the morning 9.35 - the ferry did not sink fully until the night - they left the warning to not move playing on a loop through the ship. Only the children that disobeyed the warning survived. The others drowned as they were so ingrained to listen to authority. The civilian boats that attempted to rescue people were stopped by the coast guard as people would discover the boat was overloaded. Parents on the shore were receiving desperate calls and texts from their children begging for help. And the coastguard did nothing, claiming bad weather that many experienced people said it was OK to dive sand rescue. The parents who had rushed to the shore helplessly watched as the coastguard circled doing nothing but stopping any citizens attepts to rescue people. The only rescue the coastguard made that day was the captain and crew... The people that got rescued were rescued by fishing vessels that got there first before they were stopped...3 years the ferry lay at the bottom as the Govt would not raise it for fear of discovering the truth that it was overladen.... They found video footage taken on mobile phones that were recovered of children wishing their families goodbye. One of the civilian rescue divers later committed suicide after having to recover so many childrens bodies knowing that he could have saved them but was forcibly stopped. As a parent I could not comprehend having to live through such a thing. Horrific that your own goverment would perpetrate and then cover up such a incident... jailing dissenters. It was proven that there were high officials with huge financial interests in the ferry. The president colluded with them to bury the truth and hamper investigations... 10000 people put on a Govt blacklist for protesting.
BTS went and paid respects to the parents of the victims when the tragedy occured in 2014. No Cameras - No fanfair - just doing what was right...They also donated approx $100,000 (that year they only earnt $300,000 - they gave 1/3 of their earnings) to help the parents in their fight for justice.... We only found out about the donation years later as one of the parents was sick of all the hatred BTS was always getting and wanted others to know just how decent they are.
The MV, The album cover, The choreography all relate back to the Sewol. But The song is about missing anyone you love and are separated from. They have since been singing Spring Day during the panademic as the world is now longing for a spring day.... I will forever hold this song as special in my heart.
Sorry this is so long - but I really wanted to pass his comment and information to you relating to your Spring Day Explained video.. you have helped keep the memory of Sewol alive and maybe others who do not know of it will learn of the tragedy. Thank you for sharing your journey, and helping to spread BTS message..
'Balls' is an english expression - kinda means "rubbish" or "nonsense"

To be honest, I think it's a good idea to watch the Bulletproof Vibes one before the Italian Army one anyway, I think both videos go together perfectly. Italian Army goes more into the tragedy and hits on some points that Bulletproof Vibes doesn't and vice versa. So Megan saying you'll do the other as well later sounds absolutely ideal to me. And I think it's totally okay to space them out, it's a lot to take in and process emotionally. Thank you to both of you for doing the deep dive on this one, it remains one of my favorite songs of all time and has helped me through a lot. And it's just so lovely to see people paying it the respect it deserves.
Back when all this was happening, artists were getting blacklisted for speaking out against the SK government, the director of Snowpiercer being one of them. Bangtan quietly donated $100 million Korean won and met with the families of survivors. They were careful about revealing any connection to disaster for a long time, but in a 2020 Esquire interview when asked directly about it, Jin finally said, “It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing.” Which is the first time they've openly confirmed it. But they have always had a way of doing things that allows people to decode and interpret the deeper meaning- which I think it super cool.

I'm for 13 years into Korean language and I watched sinking on line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whole world could see it, whole world could know that those kids are dying and that their parents were watching from the shore unable to do anything FOR THEIR dying kids!!!!!!!!!! So disturbing... Only one Life guard boat was there and didn't help and plus didn't allow any boat to go close to the ferry to help!!!! Some kids who didn't listen to captain's order jumped into the water and saved themself, good kids who listened to the order - DIED. President Park didn't even leave her room till noon when everything was over and kids were dead. And they didn't even pump oxygen into the boat to help with air pockets where some kids would survive, life guard people cut hoses for oxygen and only pretended that they were pumping oxygen for the reporters. I will stop because I'm getting so upset.
Nobody was punished for that... some served few years and are already free. President was later impeached for some money but was like sick in jail all the time, now she is free and forgiven and with current president going around.

The sad part of this story is the fact that there is video from the students on the ship. Come to find out that the government was a part of this greed and negligence, to where the president was pushed out of power and replaced.

I guess that this was an actual documentary on the Sewol disaster. This background is good but in relationship to the video you should have watched the background/MV explained video. As usual with BTS there is so much symbolism in the video connecting to both the train and the ferry disaster. This video is not just about the fairy disaster but also a social commentary on the Korean government and societal restrictions.
There are things in every single scene that directly or indirectly relate to both of those things. There are a couple of background videos that give information on this. In my opinion the most comprehensive one is the one done by an Italian Army. It'll pretty much blow your mind.

The documentary was good but somewhat like an explanation of a disaster from history channel. I think the Italian Army video warrants watching as it provides real life footage of events including families going through them in real time and a better context as to the political nature of the rescue attempts and non-attempts. As to mv theory, it is more developed and has noteworthy differences. I always say Italian Army and Bulletproof Vibes are best taken together.

What is missing is your reaction to their dance practice or their live performance to this song. I was attracted to BTS because of their choreography which you do not get in this MV. When you see them live or in the practice studio, you get to see each members part in the choreography even when they do not have the lead solo. The constant moving the lead singer in the middle and around just adds to their performance. It's not just a group singing, it's so much more to watch them perform visually while listening to them singing.
I prefer the bulletproof vibes explanation video because it relates more to the Music video with all the subtle hints of what you saw in the film. It was not as obvious what they were doing but given all the coincidences it does make sense. This song was and still is my favorite song overall, choreography, melody, meaning. Not many artists do this, many Western artists create music that's very repetitive, but to have a song with so much depth and meaning to the lyrics, it means so much more than songs that just repeat over and over.

The song is beautiful and still to this day is one of my favorites. It is sad yet sweet. I do not think it was written specifically about the disaster, It was more about losing somebody close to you or simply missing somebody or something too much. It gives you a sense of longing and remembering things from the past that may never come back. The song came out about 3 years after the ferry tragedy and people have always associated it with it, and have used it to remember those who died that day because of its meaningful lyrics and the imagery of the MV which related to the sinking ferry.

They kept repeating to the kids to stay in their rooms. They were obedient of their olders, they called their parents and they told them to keep calm and obey the indications. That made the whole tragedy even worst

Thank you for taking the time to properly look into this song - I believe it is one of the most important ones of all their songs! I see many have already mentioned the very good video explanation by Italian Army which I can also recommend. However, I wanted to give another tip to anyone interested in seeing how multilayered BTS videos can be. There is an interpretation by Jordan Orme who does not consider the possibility of the video referencing the Sewol tragedy at all. He points out a whole different storyline to the MV that is all about youth and growing up and I love it because it shows how many dimensions there are in BTS's works.

Since you didn’t feel you could mentally handle the Italian version right now, it is very heartbreaking to watch and you feel absolutely helpless seeing all the parents reactions, how about watching the explication video? Namjoon did an amazing job with spring day it’s never stop touching the hearts of many people. I watched in Tae’s Spring Day demo he said they been task to composed song and write about the concept Spring that is why Tae’s demo version was upbeat but Joon actually wrote a moment before Spring Come where it is still spring and spring about to enter where the air is still cold but anticipating for the fresh breeze of spring.

The boys are never afraid to tackle social issues in their songs, which are very different for idol groups. This is why their genuineness comes thru always.

S.Korea has one of the highest suicd3 rates in the world, especially among the young. The lyrics were written by RM/Suga, thinking of friends lost. (Suga's line: "I love/hate you" because you can't stand that a loved one would voluntarily die).
But then it worked out to represent the loss of a loved one for any reason.
Keep an eye out for the Spring Day tree in other videos, as a sign of hope that winter can't last forever.

Hi Jody! You guys are beautiful together, two beautiful souls 🙏💜
I always cry watching Spring Day, in heartbreak and in hope from people like BTS being willing and actually shining a light where it needs to be.
RM has said the song is about loss and grief but everybody agrees the video is about Sewol. A couple bits not mentioned in the explanation you watched:
    - the first time you see the mountain pile of clothes it's in pitch blackness, like the depths of the sea; the second time you see it it's twilight, like in heaven
    - the dryers at the laundromat, look a lot like portholes, which suggests the clothes tumbling around are the kids in the ship... 😞😞😞
The Korean president was impeached over this. The are clips of parents at the seashore yelling begging the coastguard to do something, save even one person while there's still time with the air pockets, one guy yells back that his shift starts at 1. Makes me want to stab some mofos 🤬😞
The guys put a Lot of references to Spring Day in yet to come. The mirror scene at the end in the bus, every army burst into tears at that one.
    Ok I'm done rambling!
    Hugs to both of you!
    And shoutout to Megan!
    💜

It is heartbreaking to listen to but some if the phone messages and recordings of the children on board of their time trapped in the boat have been released. There is footage of the parents at the scene as well. As a parent it is heart wrenching to watch. The video by Italian Army describes how the MV shows connections to the tragedy but RM wrote the song thinking about a friend he missed so the song itself is about loss and hope and not specifically about the disaster.

They couldn’t call the cabins with the kids because at that point that the decision was made to evacuate, water in the ship had knocked out most of the intercom system. And this is a culture that gives elders respect and they follow rules, so the kids were told to stay in place, so…they did.

  • @VanCityGal

I know this is a hard one but necessary for any Army to watch. The song wasn't actually written about this tragedy but the MV was made in tribute to the lives lost. You're right, everything has a deeper meaning. The time on the clock in the laundromat was the time the boat started sinking, jin putting money in the washer represents the greed of the company and government who covered it up, and the clothes tumbling and jin's reflection symbolize the kids trapped inside the boat (at least these are all theories.) Just tragic!

Holy crap!! I just told my husband about what I was watching and how it was sad, AND HE WAS THERE!!! He is a Marine and was actually deployed the at the time. His ship offered to help and send out amphibious vehicles within the first 24 hours, but the South Korean government turned them away for another day or two. Just to save face and not accept aid from a foreign military (even though we are allies with them) It was really hard on the crew; they were so close, wanted to help, and had great equipment to do so, just to be told to leave and find out just how great the loss was a little later. So very sad.. I'm not sure if they actually could have made a difference, but they couldn't possibly have hurt their odds

This is a tough one for me - beautiful song - but tied to the video and its meaning in my mind. I have lost a daughter - and it is a life changing event. I thought losing my parents was rough, that was a piece of cake next to that. I lost a sister 8 months after my daughter, and that grief was so deep that I couldn't possibly be in any more paid by adding the loss of my sister. My daughter had Cystic Fibrosis, so I always knew her life would be short, and what you guys said in here - tomorrow isn't guaranteed for ANYONE - that is how I finally got my head wrapped around a doctor telling me, "barring any complications, there's no reason to believe she won't live into young adulthood," as I held my 6 month old first born when she was diagnosed. I knew to never take a day for granted.
Long, long, difficult story, but I held her hand and stroked her hair as she crossed over on Nov.3, 2017 - less than a month shy of her 35th birthday - longer that I had ever dared hope for, but she will always be my "baby". Then 18 days later in the darkest time of my life, I discovered a group called BTS when they were on the AMAs singing "DNA" - talk about the cavalry arriving when you need them! They were able to cut through my fog and help me start restoring my mental health bit by bit. They showed me joy could still exist, helped me smile again, and sometimes I had them to cry with seeing what they have gone through. And when I looked up the lyrics for that song - holy moly - destiny indeed - it was a perfect "1st song".
My fondest dream is to see them live - to soak up that aura in person that saved me, but it seems impossible! Was supposed to go to Chicago 2020, but it was canceled and never rescheduled. Suga's tickets were sold out before I could even look at them since I didn't win a spot in the "ticket lottery" for the Army sale. As a grandma ARMY that spent decades as a single mom, there will never be money for plane tickets or traveling across country to see them if I did ever manage to get tickets. Plus I will probably be in a wheelchair by the time OT7 tours again. But I will keep telling the universe I WANT IT - maybe my bias JK will tour like Suga did and I will at least to get to see him while I can. In the meantime, I'm so grateful to have their wonderful catalog of music and their videos and live "hangs" with Army to shine a ray of light in my life! I enjoy being able to "share" this love for them with reactors like you, so I wish you continuing success!💜

about your intro i wouldnt say bts is the opposite of megan the stallion i would say they have a very diverse discography. they do have songs that are more adult rated and then they do have kid friendly songs they collabed with megan because they love her music theyre friends and they connect well especially the rappers. when you go deeper into bts especially their solo music dont be surprised to find curses and sexual innuendos they never claimed to be disney only for kids artists theyve always done whatever they wanted to do and people just assume boyband = clean and kid friendly always when thats not the case. so i understand your point but dont assume theres nothing explicit about them cause youll be blindsided by it when you see it lol. also as theyre getting older they may decide to go more in that direction now theyre on a break so we dont know what the members are going to release for their solo projects or what theyre gonna make when they come back together as a group theyre all late 20s early 30s theyre not kids anymore so just wanted to put this out there of course they have songs for kids but their entire catalogue isnt for kids. also the subject matters like theyre blunt especially in their social justice songs theyre very direct when discussing social issues its not a cute fun song only theres always deeper messages and those messages are sometimes very blunt. try to not put expectations on bts no two songs are alike.

It was interesting to see the more technical side to this disaster in that video but the failings of the politicians and the appalling failings of those who should’ve done their best to rescue the passengers quickly are best seen in the Italian ARMY explanation. It’s harrowing so, as everyone has said, have the tissues ready. As for BTS being modest, yes, compared to a lot of other artists they are, but mostly in the way they dress. They go for tantalising glimpses which work a lot better than letting it all hang out as we used to say In my young day. Jimin did strip his top off in a dance battle early on in their career and of course we got to see his abs in No More Dream. His most recent photo reveals a lot of his chest. It was Jungkook whose jacket came apart on stage. You’ve watched Baepsae you know Holy water is required for that one.

Physically I'm in front of the computer at home in Australia. Mentally I'm giving Jodi a big hug.
I know a few ARMY had a problem with the first documentary. As the one who suggested it to Meg to show John, I want to specify why I did. 1. It's shorter than Brick Immortar's wonderful video though I have suggested to Meg that John watch that one too so he understands ALL of it. 2. Plainly Difficult specialises in covering in basic, easy to understand for people who aren't engineers, explanations that show ALL the causes of a disaster. The fundamental message of this documentary was that this ship was safe before this corrupt, nasty company took it and made it unsafe. Even then it travelled this route many times until the day the company wanted to overload it despite the ship being filled with high school students. Why? Because as the Spring Day MV and many others from BTS point out - kids are considered lesser in Korean society. While PD doesn't go into the politics of it to avoid controversy from SK's far right (of which there is a lot, which has included threatening the families of the survivors, and damaging monuments to them), which is a fundamental part of understanding why it was so courageous for BTS to make the video in this way instead of just a normal MV, my reason for suggesting it was so that John knew what happened at its core - the who, what, where, when and how. While this heinous manslaughter wasn't long ago, the government of SK including the despot's criminal psychopath daughter, worked so hard and did so well covering it up that were it not for BTS' MV it might well have slipped into the annuls of history without a blip. Much like the Sampoong Mall Collapse, which PD mentions and he has a documentary on that which is also very good for understanding the basic engineering failures (choices, I'd say more accurately, because no engineer with half a conscience would have signed off on the Sewol or Sampoong), people in positions of power CHOSE to overload, under ballast, and unrestrain cargo on this ship. They chose to abandon ship without making sure anyone else did. Corruption, and greed, and choices that make no sense if you have even a single working brain cell or heart, murdered those children. They should have all got the death penalty.
Also for the Americans: 'balls' is the British equivalent of 'ah f*ck' which is why the ship was saying 'balls' in the comic.

Oh, you got the “Be A Good Human” shirt on 🤍 Jungkook & Jimin used to have those shirts & sweatshirt. You can even see Jimin wore it in In The Soop 1. Btw, 42:31 I love how your wife said that _BTS doesn’t have to do videos like this..._ reminds me of 24:05 - 24:22 of *BTS: More Than K-Pop* by Elliot Sang (bby gang mag). I recommend that you check out the whole thing... I still get goosebumps whenever I encounter that video essay/documentary. He’s always on point with his commentaries _(you're wrong about k-pop: a video essay,_ _BTS vs. K-POP: a video essay,_ _i'm ill: a BTS essay, Why fans love suffering artists, etc.)_ He did such a great job going into the details and show us important insights of how BTS, since day 1, went beyond their ‘K-Pop’ tag & basically dismantle the typical expectations of the industry they are supposed to belong in. He covered how BTS’ roots (underdog story, hip hop foundation, etc.) & their socially conscious music revolutionizes the system & humanizes their brand.

I didn’t realize you had watched one explanation video. 😊. Like others indicated, there are two other explanation videos that show how the MV is a tribute to the tragedy. The one by the Italian army is comprehensive and explains the symbolism in the video. The song itself wasn’t about the tragedy as RM wrote about a friend. This is such a special song that it has stayed in the Korean chart since it debuted, even today. I hope you both get to see the explanation video. This is absolutely my favorite BTS song as it helped me overcome a personal tragedy. One of the reasons why I love BTS is that they will always talk about issues that deal with injustices.

BTS Spring Day was THE song that solidified me as ARMY. It came to me at one of the worst times of my life. I was already kinda slowly getting into BTS. But when this song came out mind you the day before my birthday on the worst year of my life I had no idea it would save me and change my life forever. I was in a relationship for almost 9 years at this point. I knew something was splitting us apart and I felt helpless and alone trying to keep us together. I cried on my birthday cause he didnt call me or anything (it was also my 30th) a time we are supposed to celebrate. I know this song is about the horrible fatal ferry disaster and loosing someone in terms of dying. But...EVERY single word and lyric was exactly how I was feeling about my relationship. Eventually a few months later he dropped the bomb and broke up with me over the phone after 9 years and actually told me "I feel trapped". I know its not the same but its like he died. One min hes there as my best friend and partner and the next hes not. I didnt know what to do. BTS was the only thing I wanted to live for and to be excited about. As sad as this song is and as sad as it makes me feel, it will always remind me of why and when I became ARMY.
Also, it was the same year as their WINGS tour and I couldnt even tell them apart but something told me I HAD to go and I did and it changed my life!! Originally, I only had a ticket for the first night, but I was all the way up high and could barely see anything. So the next morning I said FUCK IT and bought anothet ticket for the second night. I sat 4th row from the extended stage (spent my whole account on that ticket barely had enough for gas to drive 4 hrs back home) but it was so fucking worth it and I'll never be that close again. That single night changed my life...again.
BTS saved me time and time again since then as well. They have brought me so much joy in not just them but led me to other groups and artists. Being Kpop multi fandom has saved me and I will never be the same with out BTS and kpop and music. Theres so many other things I could say how BTS helped me and brought out of me.
Sorry for ranting haha but Spring Day is just THAT song. Thank you for the best reaction for this song EVER!! I love you and your videos now!

For me it`s about the emotions you can go through when you moan a loved one. But there is always hope on the horizon...

I had put off watching this video reaction for so long cause it hurts every single time I watch this. I love the song and MV so much but the story behind the song brings me to tears no matter how many times I hear it. Its rough for sure but a story that was needed to be known.
