Le passé composé French Perfect tense song

One tricky aspect of tenses from one language to the next is that some are built like each other but used differently, and some translate into more than one tense.
We often use the passé composé (perfect tense) in French where you would use the preterit in English, ie I went, I sang, I ate etc. It is for actions and events in the past which are now over and often have a clear cut starting and end point.
The first half is the verb “avoir” or “être” in the present tense (see the covers of Counting Stars and I am a Giant). We call it the auxiliary verb: just like an auxiliary cable it helps link the subject and its action and puts it in the past.
The second half is called the past participle because it participates in making the past tense. It ends in a handful of ways depending on the verb’s group: -é, -i and -u are the regular endings. You’ll also find some -is, -it, -û. The next song in this playlist is about irregular past participles ;)

For instance “j’ai joué” means ‘I played’; “J’ai mangé” ‘I ate’;
“J’ai choisi” means ‘I chose’ - easy ; “J’ai attendu” ‘I waited’.
Sometimes we need “être” not “avoir” for verbs of state and of movement:
« Je suis allé », « je suis resté » !!!
