I've got one of these on my board. It is really a great pedal, it works awesome as a wildcard for all those effects you use only occasionally and which doesn't justify to have a dedicated pedal. The use interface is greatly done and easy to dial in. The flux button is surprisingly powerful and offer a lots of control. I use the 4 cable method with a preamp that has an effect loop and I can decide with a simple toggle in the UI for each preset if the effect goes on the start or the end of my signal board. The only thing I wish it had is a global blend control, so you can add some dry signal to any of the effects, something the Stomp can do. It is not a deal breaker, though, as many of the effects on the HX One have mix dial, but still not of all. I can imagine that is very doable in software, so maybe in a future firmware update will bring something like that. Great video of a great pedal! 🙂
The flux switch is so nice. I can change my octave to go 100/70 dry/wet to 0/100 at the press of a switch. On my guitar, I can use the flux as a gain switch for the OCD, change multiple parameters at once on the modulations, etc. It's fantastic.
Glad to see you post this. I just recently picked up the hx one after feeling a little uninspired with my pedal setup. I went to GC to try and trade a large amount of pedals, including my boss ms-3 which is the home base/center command of my board, in on a hx stomp. The money on trade in for everything wasn’t quite there for my budget so I settled on keeping the ms-3 and incorporating the hx one. I have been very pleased with the addition and discovery of such great dynamic pre tones and reverb options. My only hold up now is trying to decide how I want to 4 cable method it alongside the ms-3 to have pre and post tones.
Very interesting, Janek. I’ve got the Source Audio Collider, and I can’t imagine anything having an audible level of improvement, in terms of studio quality modulation, but I’m going to check it out. Thank you !
Janek might have worked this out by now, but since he is using it in mono, so he could wire the HX One up in two positions in his signal chain and choose the "pre" or "post" position for each preset (the other position is bypassed). It's designed for 4CM around an amp, but you could just add easily have it hopping from one position to any another, like from post-amp to end of chain, for instance. I've got mine set to first in line and just after my preamp, so it can do comp, filters, octave or fuzz/synth up front, or mods, harmoniser, delays (even bitcrusher, if you're nasty), after the amp and before my "wets".
I too love my hx one. I have a zoom b6 but also a simple / small analogue board - 2 notes rebovolt (clean, dirty, drive) and oc5 are bankers. Hx one gives me a tuner and multiple effects where I only need 1, but has loads of great options, and keeps my board simple and compact. Have about 8-10 personal presets that hardly needed any tweaking at all 👌
I've been thinking of getting one of these as well. I have a stomp XL but was looking at this to bring in an effect that I didn't want to have some effects in my standard presets or snapshots. The shuffling looper is definitely one of those things (or whatever it's called - the glitchy one). If it has the 3 (or 4) note generator as well that'll be great to bring in every now and then. I've seen a few videos that demonstrate the flux button and really love that as well. I'm not a massive pedal guy but always want several options from as little amount of devices I can get my hands on so this suits me for sure, though I've been toying with the idea of swapping the XL out for the smaller one to have a more minimal board.
Janek.. curious.. how does the Line 6 compare to the recently released H90 from Eventide? Any experience with it? Also, thanks for the great content. Really appreciate it. 👍🏻
As a spanish speaker, you pronounce the U in circuitos! The U is not pronounced (usually) when it's in between a Q and an I (like Chiquito), or between a G and an I (like Guiso), with the exception of when it has an umlaut (like Pingüino). Also, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the H90! I'm not sure if you talked about it in a previous pod/video. Love from New Zealand!
You were getting some really cool sounds out of this pedal, I am sold! BTW, after watching your videos over the years, I have come to the conclusion you would be an excellent counterpoint to Pat Metheny! If it ever happens, thank me later.
Brilliant review Janek it’s my next pedal purchase. Like you I don’t have a lot of room on my board so a question if I may HX One or Mood Mk2 ideally both but which would you get first?.
All depends what you need... The HX One is going to give you about 4,000 more options than the Mood... but the Mood is the Mood, and the HX One definitely doesn't do that thing.
Why not set up the HX One in the 4 cable method so you can have presets go before or after the preamp? I've done this with both my guitar and bass pedalboards and it's wonderful.
@laurenceblackadder3103 you can set it up so it's is going before and after your preamp, you just change it within the preset or effect you're using. So I can set up reverbs after, and compressors berore. There are many videos covering it, or if you download the HX One manual it's all in there.
But in case of the shuffle looper, how do you fix that? Can you put it on 2 different presets then, one as the first pedal and another preset as the 4cm, right?
I don't at all get the hate this has received. People love the Walrus Audio M1, and it only does one effect at once and it literally didnt have a display. The new one does now though. I bought the HX One for my guitar pedalboard as soon as it launched because I was looking for a multi-effects, and it was perfect timing. I use it in the 4 cable method so it was difficult to put on my bass pedalboard. I purchased a second one for my bass pedalboard and its awesome.
I've never come close for any of the applications I use it for. One thing I would love, if they would make a looper worth using in it, is to have more than one looper in a preset. They've told me there isn't the processing power in it.
@janekgwizdala that could definetly help with your double looper setup, but you'd probably need another stomp for that right? Because of where it is in the signal chain. It's fun to maybe have a few fx between loopers so you can run a loop through some and toggle them on and off AFTER recording.
Yes, my question as well. I have the Pod Express . If you haven’t done so already, download the edit. The pod express edit opens up a whole new world, allowing you to finely tune the parameters.
I have Yamaha trbx304 and zoom b2 four. How to adjust my sound and what is general recommendation, I guess Eq full flat on the bass guitar and then set procesor?
But does he use those algorithms? In the first minute he mentioned the app and UI benefits. Eventide can't algorithm itself out of those usability issues.
I love Janek and his playing , but he mentions too many times here that this isn’t a promotion for line 6. He is after all a Yamaha brand artist both for the line 6 and for ampeg …. Even if this isn’t a sponsor video, he’s obviously advertising them.
I mention this many times because people like to chime in and tell me that the video should be titled with some sort of "paid promotion" disclaimer. It gets tiring after a while when you see that on every video you post, and it's totally unnecessary most of the time. In fact, all the time with my channel because I don't do paid reviews. I asked for the HX One, they didn't send it to me and expect me to make a video about it. Plenty of companies do that, and I almost never make videos with the gear. Many more companies send requests for paid promotional content, and I turn 100% of them down. I've had maybe two sponsored videos out of the 1,000+ I've uploaded over the past 18 years, and they are very clearly ads for a product. I endorse Line6 and Ampeg products, and as a result, over time, I get the gear I need to do my job for free. I don't get paid to make demo videos in my studio, and when I am in a Line6 or Ampeg production, I'm in front of the camera, getting paid, and have almost no control over the production. Every single person who sits in front of a camera recording themself using any equipment and then uploads it to the internet, is giving that brand exposure on some level or another. I just try and be as transparent with the process as possible because of the exact comment you left. This is not a dressing down in any way shape or form, just an opportunity to further clarify my position on the matter and be crystal clear about the process.
You gotta watch the video... Not only did I do that at 3:40, but I make no secret on my channel or in any of my videos as to what main companies I work with on a literal daily basis. That would be Ampeg, Line6, DR Strings, Mattisson Basses, and technically Universal Audio as they provided the interface in my studio some years ago. I have dozens of videos on the channel already about all of this, and am always 100% transparent when making new ones. I have a pretty serious deep-dive on exactly what you're asking about coming soon. Paid ads, sponsored videos, and all the bass channels that do a horrific job of transparency when it comes to gear they're shilling.
i think its a dumb overpriced product. yes i get it. 1 pedal, 1 joker function... but seriously: used hx stomp for 300: 8 blocks? you can set it up as 3 simple stomps per presets if snapshots are too complex. you could its easy to use the send and returns to split delays and reverbs off to the end of chain. got my m5 for 30 bucks. yes bulcky. but hx one?
It always amazes me that people like you who are negative in the comments are almost always the people who have zero content on your channel, and have made no attempt to create the thing you're so furious I have failed at. Why not jsut jog on and give us all a day off?
Janek! Always leaning forward, I love it. Thank you for continuing to inspire us.
10:48 Great Squarepusher sound
Line6 after some 10 years, still have the M5 featured on their website.
I've only sold mine because I scored a One 😁

I really like the one effect at a time approach but ... can the Noise Gate be always on or is it a seperate effect?

So cool !
It has a looper built in, you might not need the ditto anymore
except you can only use one patch at a time, so I'd be committing to it being my looper which makes it one of the bulkiest loopers I've ever seen...
I need that on my pedalbord!
Great video thanks!
