Purse seiners wrecked the herring fishery. That's why there's no canneries left on the east coast. Lobster fisherman are switching over to pig hide. Just came back from maine where I watched a seiner try to catch every bunker in a bay where I was striper fishing. Hopefully the new quotas will shut it down.
You are wrong they use pogies and we can't haul them north fast enough! People around bath me alot have always used pogies cause I've hauled them. P trawling is big reason for herring .
There are so many pogies in the altantic, the boys up east may have pushed their fish out of the bay, but there aren't any shortages of striper. This was on of the best summers I've ever seen up there. This is in Cape May NJ, offshore, and not restrained to a bay. The amount of biodiversity and biomass of bait off the coast of NJ is mind-blowing. There are literally billion and million pound schools, cruising around that Noone catches on messes with. .27 cents a pound and they're aren't stopping the buying or catching process for your dumbass stripers.
Come to Alaska, we will show you how to really purse seine and roll 10,000 pound bags of salmon aboard!

Too close to land, they were inside 3 miles.
Also, that was only an 8" pump, they were brailing just as fast if not faster. Great question 👍

They do have the pump too but select areas you cannot use it.
These guys set 5 times a day sometimes!!

2 crews wages plus the running cost of 2 boats and lots of fish falling outside of the net when scooped? How inefficient was that?
It's not inefficient at all. The boat holds 160,000 lbs. So if it was almost full then they take what's needed and let the rest go.
