    One of my fav Ray tropes is when he says anything releated to a Knight he brings up 'Martin Lawrence in the Black Knight'

      I'm pretty sure I thought of a drinking game for every time AVGN mentioned Simon's Quest in his episodes. Watching Ray play these reminded me of it.

    Hey Ray, just chiming in to say I beat Castlevania II without a guide and for the record, last week, I put milk into my washing machine and fabric softener into my tea, so I wouldn't get my hopes up on me making a cure for cancer.
    I also sipped the tea before I noticed...
    Great job with the edit as always, Light!

    A side benefit to enjoying Ray's Content is that sometimes it helps me decide on what games should go on my 'To play' list or the 'ignore' list. Castevania is now going in the latter... So thanks Ray for narrowing that down for me lol

      the games starting at SotN are a completely different style. so maybe give those a shot. But the OG platformers, yeah, those are kinda painful.

    Chronologically Castlevania Lament of Innocence is first, then CV 3, Curse of Darkness then The Adventure, Belmonts Revenge, then CV 1 and 2.

    I believe that, in the Classic CV Games anyway, 'User Error' isn't even a factor, it's all the game's fault.
    Those games are 100%, fully, and totally devoted to getting you.

    Wow, these games look like pure suffering. I can't believe anyone played them, let alone beat them. Thankfully, the 90's platformers were more forgiving.

    • @MonoDree
      @MonoDree ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah I'm glad i was a 90s baby, my first games were Spyro the dragon and Rayman 2, i never owned these next ones myself but i played the N64 and Mega Drive at a play scheme (After school club) so i had my fair share of Mario 64 and Sonic the Hedgehog. so seeing games like this for the NES, i always wondered how people enjoyed them without ripping the controller out the console lol

    The US version of Castlevania 3 was made harder for whatever reason so that's why I recommend for anyone looking to play Castlevania 3 to play the Japanese version. Plus, Grant is a lot better in the JPN version in that he throws daggers instead using a horrible stab move.

    • @ichigowww

      Supposedly it was to compete with game rentals, as in, make the game so hard it's more convenient for your pocket to just buy it instead of renting it a bunch of times, that way the money goes towards the game company instead of rental stores

    I really hope Ray comes back to Castlevania and gives Rondo a chance one of these days. The metroidvania's might be a bridge too far but Rondo is a masterpiece.

    It is a shame to have played but not beat Symphony of the Night. It is probably my #1 game of all time.
    Maybe I'll do a full play of it this weekend. Not like I have other things to do.

  • @GoldenSun5631
    @GoldenSun5631 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    While some aspects of these games are classic, a lot of the bullshit implemented in these games were simply methods to make sure people don't beat this game quickly - and thus these aspects aged poorly over the years. The NES cartridge storage size was laughable by todays standard (I think the max memory size for an NES game was 1 megabyte!) and so the amount of content the devs could put in it was very limited. So the devs implemented bullshit enemies and levels that were very hard to complete. Castlevania 2 added in the genius idea of putting in insane/cryptic puzzles that no sane person can guess on their own without a guide, thus creating even more artificial barriers for progression.

    • @TheOnlyLonelyBoy
      @TheOnlyLonelyBoy ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But if it wasn't for Castlevania 2, then we wouldn't likely have gotten Symphony of the Night and the rest of the Metroidvanias. There's a lot of rudimentary, core concepts in Castlevania 2 that carried over into the proper releases later down the road.
      Castlevania 2 is fascinatingly bad.

    • @JeedyJay
      @JeedyJay ปีที่แล้ว

      A part of the cryptic design choices that's forgotten these days was to then put the solutions and secret power-up locations in Nintendo Power.

    So yeah, CVII's translation was BAD. There are a number of re-translations (specifically Bisqwit's) out there largely fix it.
