The Zenith El Primero is famous for two reasons. One, as a watch that deserves to be called iconic even amongst the most towering icons, and that holds various important claims in the pantheon of 20th Century watchmaking, including, but not limited to the first fully integrated, Swiss made, self-winding automatic chronograph, hence the name, El Primero. The second is the El Primero’s fame as a movement alone. Even 19 years after its release in 1969, the movement was so reliable, robust and well regarded that it was used by many of the worlds other best watch manufacturers.
What is this watch? It’s a show of watchmaking force from the brand that few would debate are the king of modern-era chronographs, especially with its 10th of a second hyperactive jumping chronograph hand trick to add another Primero in 2021. And Zenith is not shy about it, with a huge open caseback to show off how the magic happens. It’s also a step in a thoroughly contemporary direction, with the ceramic bezel twist that puts it shoulder to shoulder with a sibling watch in the Daytona, who may be the more famous brother, but who 100% owes the big bro El Primero a debt dating a few decades back. If you’ve had it in your mind that you’ll get an EP one day, this might just be your moment, few are as ready for whatever the world is going to throw it.
Zenith Chronomaster Sport pricing and availability:
The Zenith Chronomaster Sport is 9900 CHF on bracelet and 9400 CHF on cordura effect bracelet. For more details, visit Zenith online.

Omega has been performing incredibly well these past few years. I love both my .002 and Speedy reduced. Both my dream watches and I love that they’re the underdog due to all the hype Rolex gets without all the unnecessary marketing. It’s incredible how much stronger the community is and it’s only growing with loyalty, which will lead to a slow, but beautiful win in the long run. Meanwhile Rolex has the mass flooded with people who don’t even wear a watch and or are biased individuals who probably only know a few major brands. This makes me even more proud to wear the brand of watches I dreamed of owning as a kid even more! Peace

I was lucky enough to have a Zenith Chronomaster back in the day. For the first six months that I owned it, it did not make any discernible losses or gains in time. I have always had trouble wearing mechanical watches; which either stopped working or lost time, so was astonished.
The one thing which needs pointing out here, is that the Daytona used to use a stepped down version of this movement, which they themselves re-calibrated to beat at a reduced frequency of 28,800 VPH. To be fair, I found the servicing costs of the movement prohibitive at the time and Rolex made the changes because of this problem. That said, it is one of my biggest regrets that I sold the watch on.

Very nice. Decent pricing too, pretty fair in my opinion. The black ceramic bezel is a bit Rolex Daytona “esque “but overall it looks good. A dark grey ceramic bezel would have been more unique and original in my opinion; but the 41 mm size is spot on and overall it looks like a decent piece of horology for the money. Another important factor: it’s probably available at RRP, so no games, no begging AD’s and paying over retail .....

I fully acknowledge as do most enthusiast 100% that Omega and Zenith have a far superior movements. This Zenith certainly hits the mark. Really - I want to own one. However, the one thing Rolex has that Omega and Zenith does not is the brand equity that Rolex brings to market. It’s not just the watch; it’s the brand equity, and that is why the Daytona Panda is selling up to 30k on the pre-owned market. Is it worth, the market says yes. If you want the better watch? It is a direct rip off from the Daytona but without the elegance or versatility of the Rolex’s easy-link adjustability. For this $10k Daytona killer, Zenith should have done some r&d and designed a proper adjustable clasp. Take a look at GO, JLC , Omega or IWC for inspiration. If you’re going to ride on the popularity of the Daytona, ok, but be better. In this price segment a drilled clasp is just lazy!

This video raises some great points. If any company has “earned” the right to do their own take on the Daytona, it’s Zenith.
To the everyday, “average” customer Rolex has left a hole in the market for all but the creme de la creme of preferred customers and those willing/able to go grey market. It’s arguably a sensible business decision to try and take up that empty space with an alternative option. Whether it will pay off for Zenith and be popular with customers is another story of course.

The things is Zenith are such a small company, that high demand for this watch (I bet there will be) will cause genuine shortages....and....waitlists!....not because of conglomerate level "games", but because their capacity is genuinely small.....Zenith are the Cosworth to Rolex's Ferrari...GIANT KILLERS

I'm sure other established swiss players have already identified Rolex's supply issues and angry customers and are exploring the market opportunities. And yes, out off all of them, Zenith holds bragging rights to be one of the few who has supplied movements to Rolex for the Dayton however as a long time watch collector let me caution those with the age old issue, never settle for an alternative. You will find yourself at the AD or online searching for the Daytona weeks or months later. This Zenith is a beautiful Chronograph with it's own rich history but it is not a direct replacement for a Daytona.

I don't care what anyone says about the likeness of this to the 116500, this is a homage piece done RIGHT!

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

But is it really a homage? There's a lot of 1969 El Primero in it too. In a lot of ways it's a bit like a 1990s Rainbow:

Ohh this is a smart move by Zenith and the right move to diversify the El Primero line. For me it has always been Zenith first, the dails are always ahead of the competition and this made the El Primero a bit more modern and sporty.

The Truth is, at least a percentage of all of us watch geeks buy based on prestige and recognition (don’t lie to yourself and say you don’t.) If you’re at a restaurant and see this watch, you think “Wow, that guy scored a Rolex Daytona.” Then you look closer and see Zenith. Again, for Watch Geeks like us, we know that Zenith is a great brand. But 99% of the population will see “Zenith” and think “that guy has a knock off Rolex, or an homage.” I’m not knocking this watch. It’s fantastic. But the prestige of a R Daytona is second to none. (I don’t own a Daytona, I have a DSSD since I’m a larger person and needed the 44MM). Great video, and production value, though.

Anyone noticed that he needs to push the reset button twice to reset the minute hand located on the bottom of the dial? My recently purchased El Primero has this annoying problem on the hour hand. And you really need to push the reset button hard to properly reset it. Some say it's normal behavior of this legendary movement...oh well

El Pimero is NOT like my Spring Drive movement, mine is way smoother than Zenith, you must find you another description for your vocabulary, Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Sport is my favourite Swiss watch right now, that Grand Seiko Tentagraph is another Cosmograph worth looking at.

The more I think about it, the more I want it more than the the modern Daytona. (Full disclosure I do for years dream about the daytona but not the 116500LN, a big red silver 6263 instead. I also dream of owning an original A386). After months of thinking, I really want the Chronomaster Sport more so than the 116500LN.
