  • How much are utilities? What is rent like? Is food expensive? How much does it cost to live in El Salvador? While this amount can differ greatly depending on income and expectations, what I can offer you is my experience. After 10 years living here in El Salvador in different areas in different stages of life. From being employed, to unemployed, to self-employed. From having1 kid to 3 kids. These are our monthly bills. #ElSalvador #CostOfLiving #MyLifeInElSalvador

    1- Water (Anda) Approximately 3$ a month
2- Electricity (multiple companies provide Electricity)
    a. Rates vary based on economy of neighbourhood
    b. Previously paid $200 a month in a home in Escalon with AC
    c. Currently in La Libertad without AC and pay $120 a month during the pandemic. Previously paid $70 a month in the same home before the pandemic.
3- Internet/Cable/Phone (3 major companies provide Internet/Cable/Phone and usually in an inclusive package)
    a. Previously paid $40 a month for basic plan 5-15 megabites of WIFI and 60 Cable Channels
    b. Upgraded recently to $80 a month for 50 megabites of WIFI and 146 Cable Channels
4- Netflix & Disney Plus (optional but available - not all shows are available)
    a. Netflix 11.99 a month

5- Rent (varies greatly depending on location and expectations)
    a. Usually between $80-$2000 a month

    a. Private Bilingual schools cost $100-500 per child per month
    b. The most unexpected expense I had coming to El Salvador
    c. may not be an expense if you do not have children, or if you send children to a public school
    8- Transportation
    a. Buying a vehicle new in El Salvador is pretty similar in cost to the US
    b. El Salvador also imports used totalled cars from The US and repairs them making them a very economical option (this is what we did)
    c. Gas is about $2.90-$3.15 gallon
    d. Public Transportation is mostly privately owned unlike The US Government Public Transportation system
    i. Buses Economical and often very crowded
ii. Taxis and Ubers also available
These are our monthly expenses living in El Salvador and while they may not be everyone’s I hope if helps give you a general idea of what you can expect to pay monthly.
El Salvador is a small country but it packs a big punch there is a lot to offer. You can be at the beach, the mountains, or the city within a half an hour and the weather is always beautiful…and of course Family comes first!

I really enjoyed El. Salvador but I did find it expensive. $1 dollar usd for a small bottle water. $4 on the street for 3 tiny apples and a tomato and onion and a tiny banana. $7 usd for a salad at Wendy's. $6 for a burger. $2 for gas station coffee. Many things are more expensive than the USA. If you buy some street food you will save money but you have to be aware of health issues.

It's funny when you mention about the families living all together even if they're older it's so true. When my son turned 18th he looked at me all scared and said "Ahh mom since I'm 18 does that mean I have to find a place to live?? I laugh! I told him even though I was raised in the United States that our Salvadorean tradition is to let you live with us until you're ready to move out. He's still here at 23 finishing his college degree. No sign of moving out anytime LOL!!

The plan was just addressed last night. Bitcoin will be an option not a requirement for consumers or small business people. There will be an app Chivo where you can pay in dollars or bitcoins and the receiver can choose bitcoin or dollars. Wifi or Saldo will not be required. It's early stages but I think this can be good for everyone.

I was able to visit for a month and stay in my wife's house which is very close to EL Centro de Santa Tecla. I really liked it there. We currently live in Long Beach, CA. We have a daughter(Ximena) that is about to turn 4 years old soon. We"re planning on visiting El Salvador in January. I've been living away from El Salvador for the last 40 years but,
in the last 5 I've been in and out plenty of times. I'm planning to live there for the rest of my days.
Lots of changes are happening especially on Infrastructure, new buildings, fast train crossing the country from one end to the other, new airport, renew of ports in Sonsonate, La Union, La Libertad,
Surf City is getting an overhaul, ...
In 3-4 years it'll turn into a very interesting place to live.
Being a small country you can live in the city or out and move around with ease, even when traffic is getting heavy. If you like warm weather, you'll be alright, lately it's getting cooler than before, though.

My mortgage is $3,500 in a regular mid sized middle class working community house, gas here in LA was about $5 per gallon, but it recently went down to about $3.80, for regular unleaded, not even the premium, LA Dept of water and power runs around another $2,500, groceries easily $250-$300 every 2 weeks. We have devastating crime, homeless on every corner, in fact just this morning, the Ralph's I shop at was robbed by a homeless lady with a wine bottle. I need to leave CA completely!

First of all, thank you for this great video, it is super informative and really well done. I am a born El Salvadorian but left the country since 1991 and had been living in Canada since then. I do visit from time to time but it is a different expense when you just go for a week or two for vacation rather than to be living in the country. I am planning to go back to El Salvador during the Canadian winter and then move back to Canada for our Canadian summers so I needed all the information that you had provided in the video.
By the way, I got a great solution for you went it comes to Netflix and TV (USA English version) and you would only need an Amazon Fire Stick 4K ($70 one time fee), an ExpressVPN account ($100 per year) and unlimited internet (speeds of 40Mbps at least Tigo has it for about $43 a month) and a Stb Emulator provider ($15 per month) all that gives you all the channels you ever need.
Again, thank you and have a great time in El Salvador.

Milk can be very expensive especially with little ones that go through it like water. We buy a liter of milk for 1.35 almost daily 🐄 What is your new favorite food here? What foods do you miss the most?

Maybe because its real milk, but milk is not good for you so drink some frescos

Wow, very well explained. She went down to the point in a very clear manner. I'm a salvadorean living in California and I am in my fifties working and saving for my retirement, I'm already considering to move to a cheaper place once I retire.

Thank you for this informative video about living in El Salvador. I was born in El Salvador and now I'm interested in buying property. This was so helpful to me with details on monthly cost of living expenses. Love everything about my Pulgarcito de America and enjoyed so much every time I visit my family and friends! Loved this video!

The info provided in this video it is pretty accurate... remember your expenses are going to be determined depending on your family size and region/zone of the country you're staying in... for most single individuals; you can find a package in San Salvador (1 room and utility bills) for $150 or less.

My hood, you brought back a lot of good memories for me, and what a courageous woman you are. Thanks for posting such a massive amount of info. I'm sure it would be beneficial for the Salvadorian diaspora waiting to come back.

Thank you for sharing El Salvador! My mother is from there, but she never wants to go back as someone who grew up during a rough time. I definitely want to go one day but I hear so much about violence and how dangerous it is. I hope to come one day to be closer to my roots!
