- Goku's martial arts capabilities are often downplayed and misunderstood. This mostly due to people's implicit bias or lack of understanding the Dragon ball verse. I hope y'all enjoy this video and sorry for the wait!

I feel like Super reminds us of the importance of martial arts when Goku was fighting Caulifla. Whis explains that Caulifla may have the stamina advantage in SSJ yet couldn't land anything because she's a street brawler whilst Goku fights with a plan and experience.
And then it all gets thrown away in the manga. I love db, but it just can’t even stay consistent in its own right, then people try to compare it to other media?
@gaudy1242 Dbs ruined db,you can hate on dbs even if it's part of db(unfortunately it is part of db)it's fine, most ppl hate it as well as myself bc of this reason you mentioned, but it's not the only reason to hate dbs tho.
@thewolfbeast816 i agree bro. not only did it ruin db, but was a bad show in its own right. it bloated itself out too early with ssg and beerus, then had way too many inconsistencies that don’t make sense comparing it to other stuff in dbs. it also completely ruined gokus character and development from Z, and they just won’t leave frieza alone bro 😭
@gaudy1242 They really made frieza a team rocket type of character, which is just sad. They should leave him alone and must stop ruining his legacy and come up with something else
This doesn't happen in the manga 'coz Toyo is terrible at writing.
Whis described Ultra Instinct as "the Pinnacle of Martial Arts". That's all there is to be said about that. Goku Platinum'd martial arts with the developer sending him a golden plaque on top
Except that in other universes like the Baki verse people achieve ultra instinct when they're 13 and it's considered an ameteur technique.
@@smalltrashman4227 Except that no they f*cking don't
@@smalltrashman4227 You do realize "clearing your mind" isn't the same as Ultra Instinct, right? Because that's literally what got Vegeta a whooping from Jiren...

At first I thought the 30 kenpo thing was just a joke and man wolf overestimating himself, but you gotta remember he made to the quarterfinals of the WORLD MARTIAL ARTS TOURMENT where even masters like King Chappa couldn’t make it. The only other non-ki user in that tournament was Panput, a world renowned professional kickboxer that was undefeated. So I don’t think it’s that unbelievable.
Same! As read it once before and completely skipped over it thinking it meant nothing, I never knew how impressive dragon ball’s martial arts was till I did research.

@superxhieldan6087 , I agree with you, but it is what it is
Most DB fans only watched Brolly movies and memes
The main issue is that people don't understand what martial arts means in the context of dragon ball. And I'd love to see u break it down in a future video
True.
Also, there's taught in daoist interal alchemy that the way to transform yourself to a higher level of functioning or achive a state of wu-chin, you must first cultivate the three interal treasures which are; jing(essence) shen(spirit)chi(breath/vital energy) it's like a transformation from the inside(like cooking an elixir that affects your entire body), and through this you'll be one with the dao. Let's just say that Ultra instinct(specially the white haired version) is what is refering to as a higher level of functionality on the mind and body. And you'll able to perform wu wei(effortless action)
Absolutely! Dragon ball has so many ties to buddism, Taoism, etc.
it’s literal foundation is Chinese mythology
i swear to god if someone still said batman is a better martial artist after this 😭

"Don't really know anything about the other guy but Goku is better I'm sure"
Goku in his first tournament would trow hands in equal terms against batman(no power nor strength) just martial arts.

If you use like a legacy batman that has the knowledge and akill of all batmans its very debatable they both know hundreds to thousands if styles to a master level and both have insane adaptability to opponents in real time...equal stats nobpdy is landong a hot for 10 or 15 minutes
Curiously, in that chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga where Roshi faces Jiren using some pseudo version of UI, the master criticizes his disciple for having left his teachings in martial arts far behind (that is to say, Goku was once a true martial artist) the moment in which he began to depend more on brute force and the power enhancements granted to him by his different phases of the Super Saiyan transformation, with Ultra Instinct being a return to those martial art bases that the protagonist was learning from his different teachers to reach the maximum state of combat efficiency in the form of the UI.
Great video man, you gained a new suscriber, keep doing videos like this, this one was yes awesome.
My friend was asking me how Goku’s ground game was.
I said “irrelevant, you’re not going to be able to maintain side-control when your opponent can go super saiyan and nuke everything in their surroundings.”

LMAO, I blame TikTok...the amount of Downplay for Goku...well, Dragon Ball Characters on a consistent basis on those "No Power Just Hands" video all the time. Like they deadazz skip over the fact Goku was boxing a character skipping forward in time, but be like Goku can't fight some odd reason😂
When people say Goku isn't a good martial artist, they are not talking about how it's defined in Dragon Ball, but his actual skill as a fighter if he were a real person. Sure, Goku is a master of Ki, but he needs to brute force his way out anytime hes caught in a simple grapple, instead of using any real world martial arts technique to escape it.
If you remove Ki from the equation, and put him in the body of a normal person in the real world, Goku would not be a master of martial arts like he is in Dragon Ball.
More like people have had a counter bias since DBS glazers can get real toxic real fast so aspects of the characters get overlooked because people get scourned. It's not okay either way. It just is what it is for now
We ignoring the fact that he beat him by guessing and overpowering his timeskip ability?
@@butamlkranch53 I'm referring to when Goku was in Base tagging and blocking Hit skipping forward in time...☝️🤓
@afro025 eh no that's still wrong cause even as a child he had the skill, and his ability to adapt isn't based off ki it's his nature so his skill plus his adaptability would make him one it would just take longer
Yeah, goku's whole thing is improving himself, sure batman is extremely skilled but he takes years and years to fully figure out every fighting style, while goku and probably sayians in general are capable of fighting and Abapting both physically and mentally, it's literally why he got better at fighting jiren despite the wide gap of power over time rather than straight up zenkai on top of zenkais (which I'm a apart of the problem with that too)
Plus vegeta is a genius too to be able to box goku consistently and keep up with him to such a degree
You don’t read comics batman does this exact same thing. He has done everything Goku has done and more even something divine as ultra instinct.
Dawg Goku has never used any actual martial arts technique to escape a grapple, he just brute forces his way out of it by increasing his Ki 😭

Mfs think Batman knowing a multitude of styles matters against a mf who been training Martial arts since he could walk😂😂😂
Funnily enough, they'd have a hard time proving that Batman scales beyond Grandpa Gohan or Master Roshi in Martial Prowess.
Goku's grandfather was unsurpassed in all the various forms of martial arts. This means that not only was he a master of every martial art on Earth, but he was the number 1 best in them all. Roshi also knew every martial art and had the "God of Martial Arts" status...
Batman easily destroys Goku in terms of martial arts.
batman wins in terms of skill but loses cuz goku is just strong.
Just thinking Batman would even consider for a sec trying to win Goku with Martial Arts is dumb on so many levels.
Batman would use a sleep dart or gas.
batman knows every martial art and can do most of the techniques in this videos and thensome
When goku says stronger he means "better" faster stronger more skilled
The only people who think that Goku is a bad martial artist have never watched Dragon Ball and started with DragonBall Z... End of story.
Not to mention non of the masters in dragon ball called goku a bad martial artist
Even in Z goku was never a bad martial artist. And in super he learned ultra instinct which is the pinnacle of martial arts techniques
3:19 5:18 yesss thank you bro, people completely misunderstand what technique is (this is what they are ACTUALLY debating when discussing martial arts)
In martial arts Technique is an efficient application of existing power. For not-so-athletic fighters, Eventually an opponent will be so strong that they DONT EVEN POSESS the power to efficiently apply on this opponent
Athleticism, technique & martial arts prowess go hand in hand. But people dont get that
This is such a hard concept to grasp unfortunately. People are probably gonna continue to downplay Goku😂
When people say Goku isn't a good martial artist, they are not talking about how it's defined in Dragon Ball, but his actual skill as a fighter if he were a real person. @@afro025it's a simple grapple maybe, but there's the factor that toppo is of comparable strength or greater than ssj goku in that instance and it's a mid air grapple where goku has no foothold or leverage. Toppo had complete control of the "space" by asserting his ki in that spot. If it was that easy to escape he would've thrown him over his shoulders or something similar he had done to freeza when he had him in a hold. Even then with freeza goku was on the ground to be able to do something. Flight in dragonball doesn't work like bleach where you can step on air. They are levitating. This is why gokus preference is or was fighting on the ground.
@@Snaaaaap It doesn't matter if they were both on the ground since Toppo completely towers over Goku, and his grapple would've still prevented Goku's feet from touching the ground due to that height difference.
@@afro025The full Nelson is the strongest technique in Dragon Ball. 😂

Thank you, I'm sick of the down play. It's just a bunch of people who got mad about someone saying Goku can win and more often than not he can. This video explains why pretty well but the T,O,P shows just how much progress he can make in a short amount of time.
I think the downplay is more to the fact of some goku fans glazing and upscaling him to the moon, and becoming so delusional and toxic whenever you have any opinion against him.
@gaudy1242 I don't disagree I've been that guy. I liked to think about what strategies could they use and how do I show their experience. Love this because it shows what power level and ki actually means. It's not just a number going up that represents strength and some arbitrary mystical power. It represents mastery of dozens of techniques both mortal and divine, and their application. It's the culmination of all that he has learned and his prodigious ability to learn more. When he gets a ridiculous power up, it's not just a number going up, it's true martial arts mastery in action within the db setting. Thanks for this video.
This was an amazing video also proving why most people don't want to believe anyone can beat him because doing so simply because of hax just won't cut it when they could never match him in raw skill
Alot of characters can match or beat him in raw skill.

and to think vegito is named the perfect fighter we can only imagine how much crazier he his
People that thinks "Wins by being stronger and not by being more skilled" they just did not watch the anime.

Why Goku is a good martial artist is because he's a humble martial artist. Goku is infinitely more trainable than Vegeta would be. Goku has been trained by the best in the world, from Gohan(grandpa) to Roshi to Kami to King Kai, etc.
He's learned from the best and kept practicing, this is why he is best.
Literally the only reason people say that he isn’t good at martial arts is because, some of the adapted material doesn’t use it as much.
Or because sometimes the solution literally is just; “punch harder”
Obviously not all the time, but enough where it’s worth mentioning.
You know, it's kind of funny because you can see the sheer hypocrisy of some people who claim that Goku just relies on raw power and doesn't know martial arts, because all he does is just raise his ki higher than his opponent's to beat them.
Ask them where the concept of ki originated from, what it references, and more importantly, how Goku raises his ki, and they'll start to bluster out random responses that reveal they've never read the manga or watched the anime, they just heard that Goku is bad at martial arts.
I've seen stupid arguments like "he has no stance! He doesn't have practiced moves!"
And I'm like... stances are a thing because we are confined to the ground. Yes, it is true that Goku has had remarkably less "realistic" fights since he became able to fly. But you know why? It's because when battles become three-dimensional and leverage or footing are no longer an applicable concern, for the most part, stances and the footwork involved become utterly meaningless, so the only thing that matters is whether your guard holds up or not, which again is infinitely harder when someone can just turn upside down with no actual loss of balance.
The most moronic take on Martial Arts Skills in Dragonball come from people who can't grasp those basic concepts.
Goku doesn't have a recognizable real world fighting style because those are designed to be used by people who can't fly.
what is the beat!?!??! OH MY GOODNESS TS IS HARD! im subbing btw
For a first video, you put out a banger! Subbed!
6:34 Dude, hearing this, it really reminds me of Majin Buu, how an innocent yet powerful child alien quickly learns techniques from one demonstration and can go toe to toe with the Earth's most skilled fighters, all while having fun.

for exm- when he(kid Goku) sees a double after image technique while fighting Jacky chan,he uses a tripple after image on Jacky😅.
And he learns almost everything from his opponents and constantly applies it in other fights...

I was rewatching Goku vs Grandpa Gohan fight. If anyone doubt of his martial arts skills, they just have to rewatch Kid Goku's fights.
As a lifelong martial artist, Goku is really that good. Yeah Roshi essentially just taught him how to develop his genki/yuki/shoki, because it really was all he needed to teach. Goku was originally taught how to straight throw hands by Gohan. Roshi prepared Goku to fight other super humans, because obviously kid Goku living alone in the mountains would drop every world champion in real life history at the same time. Fighting with a super human physicality would require and could leverage much more and many different things, not even accounting whatever whack ability any given person may have nor basic ki techniques. Goku has spent his entire existence only either training or literally fighting to the death. Even if a normal person trained for as long and as frequently as him and had the ridiculous amounts and quality of fight experience, they would be fucking ridiculously skilled.

Great video. I'm definitely going to need this but for Ichigo as a swords men
I agree with your points. But I also think its worth mentioning that Goku has been learning from everyone. He learned from all the best on earth, then moved on to learning from kami and popo, then the kais in the afterlife, and we don't even know who else he met in the 7 years after the cell saga, then he moved on to learning from an angel, who are the strongest beings in existence. nobody else in the multiverse has learned from as many diverse and powerful beings as goku, making his skills and techniques massively eclipse any fictional and non-fictional characters

finally, someone realizes how absurd the martial arts skills of the characters in dragon ball are.
fun fact: if you know what chi is (from the eastern perspective adopted by dragon ball or journey to the west, and not chi as an "adaptation" of the power system like black clover) and wuxia and and how the tropes within it.
this is just the tip of the iceberg of how unfair the skills and powers in dragon ball are compared to other fiction. which makes the dragon ball franchise very difficult to write crossover fanfics, or versus battles.
I once tried talking to a friend of mine about how I genuinely can’t believe that Dragon Ball characters would be impressed by martial artists from other series, when the DB main characters are openly _unimpressed_ by top tier fighters in their series. A friend defended by saying that Goku was impressed by one of the fighters in Universe 2. However, that person happened to be one of the most powerful fighters in the multiverse. The gap is significantly lower compared to someone from like say Baki.
@@azureheart2846 to be honest, people who say that Baki or Kenshiro have more absurd skills than goku clearly:
1. can't differentiate between fictional and real world martial arts.
2. have no understanding of eastern culture.
3. see and judge martial arts from a narrow real world perspective
4. view chi in dragon ball as the western understanding of "fantasy power" and not supernatural (this only applies to wuxia and not shounen in general).
5. think that everything has to be explained in detail and that simple explanations are bad.
6. think that flashy fights = good.
7. have poor reading comprehension and can't admit that they can be wrong.

This video is heat!! 🔥 Please keep them coming!
Great video! I just have one correction to make: while kung fu does mean great skill in Mandarin, and can be applied to anything, it would be silly to say that everything is martial arts. Martial arts is simply the study and practice of fighting techniques, either in war, self-defense, or ritual combat. Martial arts training has little to no application in most mundane, everyday activities such as baking or programming, for example.
That aside, more to the overall point you made here, technique is simply intelligent application of effort, so in Goku's case efficient use of his strength/athleticism. So while Goku is ridiculously powerful, of course that doesn't take away from how much he's refined his abilities throughout the story.
Absolutely! Kung fu literally translates to “time spent doing hard work or learning skill” but the route toriyama was going is that basically trying to imply that martial arts is just the application of your hard work or time spent learning a skill. Which is why in dragon ball specifically, everything is martial arts. For example, Bacterian is a fighter who weaponized his own odor in a fight and made his own fighting style or literal dragons who use their spit as martial art techniques. Given the limitless amount of Martial arts applications, there is technically an uncountable amount of them.
This video was immaculate my dude. absolutely incredible
I truly believe that half of people’s problem is they look at the way fights are depicted in dragon ball and assume there’s no technique in their fighting styles. They’d be wrong. It’s just that when you have to incorporate flying and energy beams into a fight, it’s not gonna look like a normal street level fight. Also, there’s only so many ways to throw a bunch or a kick. What people want if for it to look like Bruce Lee or IP man, when it just doesn’t go with how they choreograph fights. But in canon, Goku can fight like that if he wants. It’s just, why would he?
Essentially this. Also the fact that only in recent history has martial arts choreography been depicted so properly in anime and manga. Otherwise, we have to take every character's implied martial arts prowess with a grain of salt for the pre 2000s anime and manga because most of it wasn't really realistic to begin with back in the day.

Whats funny is that goku's best martial arts feats were all done before he even reached ssj.😂
He surpassed a god of martial arts who was a master of every martial arts in the world, a world where you can get 30 dan in some of these styles as a mere child.
He literally surpassed god in martial arts and learned how to predict attacks as a mere child.😂
By the time he was an adult, he had to learn from gods of gods of gods to be able to even improve. No mortal on earth could teach him a thing.😂
I find it hilarious that people try to match goku with human guys with equal stats and argue they can somehow match goku in skill.😂
Many of these fights are against guys who havent even mastered all martial arts on their own planet, let alone alien and god martial arts they have no way to know about let alone defend against.
Goku is out here fighting gods from across the multiverse that are all martial arts masters, these styles dont even exist on earth let alone in other fictions.😂 and guess who beat these people? Goku.😂

@@gamingghost6029 as I said in the video, the guidebooks and source material explains that strength is basically a martial arts concept, the stronger you are, the better of a fighter you become. one thing i loved about dragon ball is the martial arts, and one of the other series that encapsulates martial arts so well is god of highschool ( the manwha not the anime) especially in the later seasons they focus heavily on building the body back up and mastering your bodys full potential which is the essence of kame martial arts
I agree with everything said in this video. People tend to downplay Goku, especially with other fictional characters with "no powers, just hands." It's shown time and time again that Goku is able to adapt and learn as he fights, even with beings with literally millions of years worth of experience. Like, for example, in the manga, Goku didn't need anything higher than Super Saiyan God to predict and adapt to Hit's time skip movements. Another example of this would be goku making a new technique which allowed him to manipulate shockwaves (invisible punch) to hit Kefla without making physical contact.
This video was recommended to me in homepage I didn’t click it in middletrack’s post
Also nice vid
Thanks!
"he's good at martial arts because the story says so"
No skill analysis
No counter tactics(only the skill copying)
No mention of a real applicatable form of martial arts
Ki beams should not count if it does then Captain marvel, shocker from spiderman, etc are masters too
Thank you this video is literally just cope Goku has shown minimal martial arts skill throughout the entire series.
Goku literally shows that he’s good at martial arts within the story..
Skill analysis - Goku vs Hit, Goku vs Tien (23rd WT)
Counter attacks - Goku vs Roshi, Goku vs Tao
real martial arts he has - KungFu, boxing, muay thai
Ki does count because it’s stated to be martial arts and has several techniques derived from knowing how to utilize Ki while basic energy beams like in marvel or DC don’t have such statements nor does it operate like how Ki operates
Well done, your hard work has definitely payed off, you've earned a new sub, keep up the great work
the Point
This is all nice and all, but what about Frieza. It's been proven in Super that dude never learned to fight. He just throws hands and is the most powerful being in the universe. He trained for 4 months and became stronger than SSJB, which took Goku and Vegeta decades to reach. Sometimes, Dragonball just doesn't make sense.
yup then trained for 10 years and all that skill goku had was irrelevant because frieza has more ki so he no diffs him and vegeta simultaneously without them even being able to react
Frieza is a prodigy... It's a stupid explanation, but an explanation nonetheless.
Great video!
Thanks!
So you telling me that me working on my Minecraft house or me working on my clay sculptures is considered kung fu? 🧐 1:36
I think the problem is displayed skill when it comes to the whole “no powers, just hands.” Goku doesn’t fight like an mma fighter and has more of a kung-fu karate style. If we take that to real life he’d lose a lot of the time. There’s the argument that goku can see techniques and copy them but that’s not how real martial arts works. If someone throws a spinning hook kick, you see it and you copy it. It doesn’t guarantee you can land it because against high level fighters it requires some set up to land.
I agree Goku is a good martial artist but I think martial arts in dragonball is much different to martial arts in the real world and we gotta acknowledge that.
Exactly. This is why comparing different franchises is not possible a lot of times. Each universe has different rules.
The problem is that, let's say you are a fighter in the dragon ball universe, and you knew all martial arts. Why would you fight differently from what is shown?
@@pampanamonick7076 because dragon balls fighting isn’t realistic, Toriyama himself said he based it off of kung fu movies that he enjoys rather than real martial arts
@@pampanamonick7076 and martial arts in the dragonball universe has a different definition. Which is what I’m trying to say, like kaioken is considered a martial arts technique
exactly why you have to downplay goku because if we put even stats goku wins. he knows pressure points shit with your breathing or sense of energy you have been predicted. he has flawless movement.
This video was 🔥 I'll be waiting for the next video
People started downplaying Goku because we "glaze" him too much I think, but no, its not glaze, they just didnt read the series, Goku is just the GOAT, hes THAT guy
Saying we glaze is like saying Sun Wuokong is glazed, no hes not, hes just that good. Same with Goku.
Saying Goku solos fiction is glazing as most of y'all are deadass when y'all say that, most of y'all also says he solos jesus, is glaze and just disrespectful to one's religion.
@tmakster7748 I dont think noone seriously says Goku solos fiction
We all know theres individual characters rhat beat him, let alone all of fiction
The point is people have started to downplay him in this new trend of giving the most crazy scaling possible to every series that has been going on for a while
For some reason people will glaze any verse TO HELL using really questionable data, I dont like the trend I preffer to keep it grounded, but I dislike even more when its done for one series and not for the other.
Anyways, the point is Goku is strong af, not that he solos fiction.
@@tmakster7748 first off "goku solos fiction" is clearly a joke. second who tf is "most of us"? Most of us do NOT, that's just confirmation bias speaking for you
Subscribing. This was such a solid video and I'm happy you inlcuded GT. Because canon or not, it's still a feat worth mentioning considering how cracked it is.

"Goku is NOT a force to be reckoned with"
Welp, you heard it from the horse's mouth, Goku ain't shit, pack it up folks, we got 'em
Sometimes the connotation can imply that it's a person you don't wanna mess with.
Like, "Oh don't piss that guy off, he is not a force to be reckoned with."
Depending on narrative, something can mean two different things

I completely follow, I just think it's funny because of the way that you chose to use it, das all
Goku in original DB before Z had so much playful hubris. I love watching him be on the brink of death with a smile on his face because he knows he’s still got tricks up his sleeve
Goku literally trained with GODS n Angels.
Great video ppl forget no matter how skilled u are in the dragon ball universe if u can hurt a person none of it matters
ever since the Frieza saga if someone is stronger than goku they always get beaten by unlocking a new color hair dye / hair style. goku is supposed to be the greatest martial artist ever but the only time he's overcome a gap in power with his superior fighting skill is in OG dragon ball. you can cope and say those hair dyes ARE martial arts just like everything else in dragon ball but that's clearly missing the point, the debate is whether current goku is a skilled fighter, not if farting and eating technically count as martial arts in dragon ball.
The most you''ll get to goku displaying his top tier skill these days is him fighting hit's from seconds in the future and everything surrounding the Ultra instinct form (which recently in the manga is just another power up form and doesnt actually do much dodging anymore.)
also 11:41 saying "UI makes goku the greatest martial artist in fiction" is crazy work considering there's martial artists in his verse that are still above him. stop the wank.
Son Goku, The God of throwing hands
Compared to other anime/manga the martial arts of Dragonball look a bit bland, everyone uses a mix of physical attacks and energy blasts, while in Fist of the North Star or Saint Seiya you see techniques that make people explode from inside, cut them to ribbons, rip their souls off and send it straight to hell, or remove all senses and send the opponent into other dimensions.
Two Martial arts with plans and experience makes a close match(it will depend on what style,), and a duel between Goku and another person who is a top-tier of the martial art, with unknown skill" the earlier fights in the world tournament, it usually feels like he is "cheesing" by speed blitzing(meaning going way too fast for their reflexes or reaction time to pull away) or just dodging most things(We seen the speed Goku traveled in this video). A speedster or a entity who can speedblitz a very fast object or some object flying at under mach 0.3-0.7 attacking it can hit like 20 times in the action of a grab or other faster movement options will connect way more with more simple and quick movements, while the target is responding after many hits.
Goku(while he still a child and have a tail) is definitely good at adapting at doing at playing and learning a skill in a game "tag" (approximately 8:50)he shown to use those "skills" effectively and at least "confirm hitting" since he is being way too fast to keep up and the results will be shown.
Maybe they are referring that Goku(as a adult) is more of a Strategic and tactical top tier, he just observes and counters, he has a library for it I think.
It seems like Kid Goku is "cheesing" with speed to get the first hit and since he is strong because of his physical and Ki training and causing confusion in others and is has ambiguous amount of skill, and other subtle things.
Yet Goku in his adult self has evidence that his is clearly a genius and immensely skilled in application of techniques, simply he embodies the mention of Kung Fu and the idea of the purpose.
Also it's good to consider that Goku as a person is a Saiyan I think, and his son is half saiyan, half human.
Middle track ❤
Interesting video from a starting channel I will happily give you a sub for this
