Thx for your video. I don't get why you would use a plugin to change presets on the SPDS and not Program Changes directly set from the MIDI region. Could you elaborate ? Thanks again !
Yep - one example would be: you want to change a kit on SX during a scene e.g. bar 1-31 Kit X + bar 32-110 kit Y which would need a triggering a second clip. Another use case would be addressing kits above 128 and then switching back under 128: instead of doing the math and having to send multiple messages (MSB/LSB + PRG CH starting at 1 for selecting kit 129 etc.) can be confusing and just something peeps don't want to bother with e.g. in a rehearsal situation where you just need things to be set up quick n safe
@@simonhouel1984 You just proved what the advantage of using the SX Kit Selector here is - haha - I would need to look it up what the exact numbers are...
@@abletondrummer I just did that today. I put every PC for a SX-Pro for a 40 songs set. MIDI regions are definitely more practical than plugin automation. Easier to see and modify on the spot. Just the PGM to set, no offset ... maybe the sub if you need to. So ... well I still don't get it but nice to know anyway. Thank you.
Can i adjust midi globally, instead of setting each pad. All my drum kits, in Cubase, is one octave lower? Im afraid its missing like the 'set all kits to system'. ?
I m not aware of a global transpose/pitch function like that - in Ableton Live you could just use a MIDI effect ("Pitch") and set the receiving notes all one octave up/down
Thank you so much for those infos. May I ask how to output midi to the SPDSX? (Playing a midi track in Ableton and getting the sound out fo the spdsx pro). What should be done within the SPD and Ableton ? Could it work with the computer to USB cable or midi to usb ? cheers
Haven’t watched the entire video. I’m currently using a Spd sx pro with a fd-9 hh pedal. Is it possible to configure the pedal so when it is press hi-hat will sound closed and when released it will sound open? I’ve been searching for this and haven’t found a way to do so
@@matturmy yep it is possible - there are two options: using CC#4 for pedal position with Sampler and connect this to "Sample Selection" (=this way you can have more then open/close but half-open etc. as well) OR using a M4L plug changing the MIDI note pitch the SX pad is sending via the ideal position between Open/Close state - planning to release this over the next weeks...
Big fan - thanks for all you do. Question that I can’t seem to find an answer to. I would love to have ableton trigger a pad on the Roland. For example, I have a sound loaded on the Roland spd sx pro. Instead of hitting the pad myself, I would love to have ableton make it play using midi. Any ideas?
Thx! - You can just send MIDI Notes from Ableton TO the SPD-SX - you would need to activate the SX "Track Out" in the MIDI prefs + then set a MIDI Track "Midi To" to the SX - done
Thank you for all your work! I am new to the SPD SX PRO and Ableton, and I have a basic question: can Ableton receive sounds that I've created on my SPD SX PRO via MIDI? Or must the sounds be already in Ableton? I'm trying to record by playing my SPD SX PRO, and have each pad as a separate track in Ableton, so I can later edit the MIDI in Ableton, but I need the sounds to come from the SPD, not the Ableton sounds. Thanks again!
Hey it all could be set up but working a little different then you described. MIDI is ‚just‘ a controlling signal - it is not sending Audio - but you can set up the SX to stream the Audio and record that in Ableton Live and edit afterwards . I made a few courses going through the basics and explaining connection types, you can find those here: blog.abletondrummer.com/online-courses/
@@abletondrummer Thank you so much!! I'm very interested in your courses and potentially your SPD SX controller. I'll be in touch. Thanks again for all your great work. It's very hard to find people as passionate and clear of thought that can explain this stuff simply.
Excellent video and community support. I have a question, i was using ableton and spdsxpro, i was syncing the tempo from ableton to spdsxpro but i wanna use the spdsxpro sounds, when i play a midi track, the ableton metronome have a really big difference between the spdsxpro tempo. sdpxpro have the correct bpm, but is a delay between the soft and the pad. This is like a midi latency problem. Could you share some info or a video about this?
hmmmm - IF I get you right you send MIDI from Ableton Live to the SX Pro to trigger the sounds there? If you get some notice-able latency this could be quite a few things. Here s some info on the whole latency topic: th-cam.com/video/h1p347mmR-s/w-d-xo.html
hi! i was wondering if u could use the dials to navigate through scene up and down? i tried to map it but it didnt work. do you know if there is a way to map this?
Yes that's possible - you want to activate the "MIDI Map Mode" (top right corner button which says "MIDI". Under your last scene visible you now get a row which shows a PLAY, STOP, ARROW UP/DOWN + A NUMBER BOX. This NUMBER BOX is the one you want to MIDI map to a dial of the SX. Now leave/turn off the MIDI MAP Mode. Now you can control the selection for scenes via a dial. BUT this is 'limited' to 128 values/scenes (MIDI CC 'only' has 128 values). IF you want some deeper navigation and Scene Setlist control this M4L device might be for you: th-cam.com/video/tN8Y8jC5iaA/w-d-xo.html
another question, can i use my spd pro as an interface? send out tracks from ableton through the balanced outputs? right now my mac doesnt recognise my spd as an interface
Are we talking SX or SX PRO? SX can be used for 2 MONO outs and the PRO for even more. For both you would need to install the audio driver and you would need to set the routings in your SX. Here's one video of my course on how to set this all up for the SX abletonkurse.teachable.com/courses/spd-sx-with-ableton-live/lectures/3599549
I was super hopeful this would be the FINAL video I needed to understand this. But alas no. Despite getting info about sending a signal, I was unable to determine which note my pad actually sent anything to despite seeing midi input signals. Was unable to map.

This is great, your content is amazing. One question, I use a footswitch connected to my spdsx to play my set in arrangement view. Can I disable the loop and at the same time go to the next section with the same fw pedal, and at that moment not press play and just disable the loop? I've seen the drummer in twenty one pilots do the same thing, he has playback control and deactivates the loop with the same footswitch.
Oh yes the SX spits out MIDI as well! - Here is a playlist for examples for using the SPD SX with Ableton Live - th-cam.com/video/Tj5fWaq8WQw/w-d-xo.html
Can i use the midi commander of meloaudio to control spd sx pro through midi? I can't to set up this because i don't understand how this work. Help mee
Hey - TBH a simple foot switch would make more sense as the SX/SX Pro are designed to be controlled via that. HOWEVER the MIDI commander can control the kit selection and you can go up/down one kit via the build in "ATOM" preset.
hey man great video (except for the out of focus screen shot haha) im trying to get the spdx to send program control messages to live so when I change kit on spdx it changes track in ableton, (using selected track, a max for live gadget) however live sees the changing of the kit as a pitchbend. Do you know what's happening here?
haha - yes sorry - the 'blurry' rec was found out at the end... - Yes the +/- buttons ARE sending PROGRAM CHANGE (not PitchBend). You can't use those messages for Ableton's native MIDI mapping and you would need to translate those to notes (or CCs depending on what you want to map). You could use my CONVERT PRG CH TO MIDI NOTES but this would involve IAC/virtual MID OUT + back in routing. IF you want to change sounds I would rather go the CHAIN concept here. For this I would suggest you check out my "SPD SX BUTTONS TO CHAIN SELECTOR" -> th-cam.com/video/bk3fmqn1nuo/w-d-xo.html For more deeper and detailed control in session view make sure to check out my SX SESSION control device -> th-cam.com/video/I3Z2oHRRT6Q/w-d-xo.html
I’d like to set a pad to play a Roland tr8 without a computer but haven’t found a solution yet. I know how to do it with Ableton but not with pure hardware.
This tech is just too clunky. INCAPABLE of working together. Can't believe i paid so much for this roland crap. Should have dropped 100 for a novation midi controller and stop trying to drum like a drummer. This shiz is done.
