- The fishermen had met Jesus before, but now, as Jesus is teaching, he asks for a favor. Jesus uses their fishing boat to preach to the crowd. Then, there is a surprising miracle and a call to follow.
This video has been designed to be used in small groups. When you have gathered your group, begin with prayer.
Icebreaker: What is the best fish story that you’ve heard?
Watch the video. Use the head questions to help guide the group in retelling the story from what they heard. Then read the text: Luke 5:1-11. Use the rest of the quetions to spark some conversation.
Head Questions - get the facts straight
1. Where does our story happen?
2. What was Jesus doing there?
3. Where did Jesus preach from?
4. After Jesus was finished teaching, what did He tell Simon Peter to do?
5. How does Peter react to this suggestion?
6. What happens when they throw the nets out?
7. What is Peter’s reaction?
8. What is Jesus tell Peter?
9. How do Peter and the other three fishermen react?
Heart Questions - dig deeper
1. Why do you think the people sought out Jesus? Why do you seek Jesus?
2. How do you see Jesus using what is at hand to improve the ability of the people to hear? What things might you use to reach other people effectively for Jesus?
3. How might Peter have been a captive audience for the message of Jesus in our story? When have you heard a message from Jesus that you were not expecting?

5. How do you see Peter being obedient to Jesus? Have you ever had to do something similar? Share if you are comfortable.
6. What blessing do you see from Peter’s obedience? How do you think Peter and the other fishermen felt about this?
7. Peter had been with Jesus multiple times at this point. Why do you think he suddenly felt unworthy and asked Jesus to leave him now?
8. When have you felt unworthy before Jesus? What do you see as the solution to this?
9. What part do you see fear playing in Peter’s reaction? How does Jesus address this? What does this say to us when we are fearful?
10. When Jesus tells the men that they will be fishing for people, the Greek Word used has a connotation of “capture alive or capture for life.” Why might this be significant?
11. How do you think these fishermen could walk away from the biggest catch of their lives to follow Jesus? What have you had to leave behind to follow Jesus? Does He want you to leave something else to follow Him more closely?
12. What do we learn about God from this story? What do we learn about humanity?
Hands Questions - application
1. What have you learned that will help you on your faith journey?
2. What is today’s theme?
3. How will you act on what you learned today?
