- Jesus was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum when a demon-possessed man came to harass Him. How does Jesus react?
This video is designed to be used in a small group. When you have gathered your group, begin in prayer.
Icebreaker: Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
Watch the video, use the head questions to help the group retell the story from what they heard. Then read the text, Mark 1:21-39. Use the remaining question to spark some conversation.
Head Questions - get the facts straight
1. What town was Jesus in?
2. Where was He teaching, and on what day?
3. Who confronted Jesus in the synagogue?
4. How did Jesus handle it?
5. How did the people react to this?
6. Where does Jesus go next?
7. Who is all there?
8. What does Jesus do there?
9. What happens after sundown?
10. Where does Jesus go the next morning?
11. Who goes to look for Jesus?
12. Where does Jesus need to go and why?
Heart Questions - dig deeper
1. Why do you think Jesus started teaching in the synagogue? What does this say to church attendance for us today?
2. What do you think it means that Jesus taught with authority unlike the teachers of the law?
3. How do you think a man with an evil spirit could be in the synagogue? What might this tell us about church today?
4. Why do you think the evil spirit knew who Jesus was, yet most of the people did not?
5. Why do you think Jesus commanded the evil spirits not to tell who He was?
6. What did the people do when they observed that evil spirits obeyed the words of Jesus? How would that have affected you?
7. How does Jesus’ healing of Peter’s mother-in-law compare with the exorcism?
8. What does the fact that Peter’s mother-in-law immediately began to serve them tell you?
9. Our story begins on the Sabbath, which means people are limited in how far they travel and how much they can carry. What is significant about people waiting until after sundown to bring others to be healed by Jesus?
10. The Greek word for “brought” is phero, meaning “to carry a burden or to move by carrying. How do people intercede for others in our story? How do we intercede for others today?
11. What do you picture happening that evening at Peter’s house? Have you ever observed something similar?
12. How and where does Jesus find time for prayer? If Jesus needed to get away for time with the Father, what does that say to us? What does a “quiet time” with the Lord look like for you?
13. Why do you think the people were looking for Jesus the following morning?
14. Why do you think Jesus stayed with the Samaritans for two days but moved on to a new village in our story?
15. What do you see as Jesus’ purpose from today’s story?
16. What do we learn about God? About humankind?
