Im in the Bahamas and Im building my first set of cabinets and i must say that your instructionnon how to build a cabinet is so accurate and precise.. Thanks you. when im done i will send you a photo
The staring at your plan in random parts of the shop is so funny. I do this all the time I build new things that I’ve never built before and do my best to not go too quickly and make a mistake therefore over studying plans is a must 😂
when pocket hole jigs / machines became readily available for the homework shop. That was a joinery game changer and time saver for me. Before I purchased my pocket hole machines and jigs. I'd built my face frames with dowel, mortis and ternion, tongue and groove and ship lap joinery. But now for my face frames, its simply pocket hole joinery, screws and a few pin nails. Super simple, super-fast and very strong for face frames. Great video.
Do you notice the pieces shift ever so slightly when using pocket hole joinery? It happens with me on site when wainscoting frames so I've been looking at pocket hole cutters which cut a lower angle pocket using a router so the pieces don't shift. I watched a video where a guy built his own and it's a professional hole cutting machine but he doesn't have plans for it
@@a-carpenter9229 I don't have that happen to me. I always use a Kreg clamp made for this kind of joinery. When using glue (this is where the pieces might slide) I will pre-assemble the joint and that gives me the holes just like if you had drilled a pilot hole for a regular screw.I got this from a video that I saw from Kreg many years ago. I have one of the original pocket hole jigs made from aluminum with steel drill guides and I still use it a lot.

If I had a shop setup like this, it’d probably be because I already build cabinets. Great video, and good job on the box. However, I do not recommend putting face frames together with pocket screws - particularly on wall cabinets. Having built custom cabinets and furniture for over 40 years I have seen pocket screw face frames fail after 5-10 years - again, mostly on wall cabinets. i have used dowels and floating tenons in the past, now I use dominos.
I am starting to build my kitchen cabinets and have never built any before. The series of how to build cabinets have helped a lot. I really like your channel and have subscribed. So hey have watched a couple vids and enjoy them. People need to chill I think. You show a process and make it pretty easy to understand. Don't know who this bourbon moth guy is, never seen any of his stuff. If I do I suspect I'll think he's copying your style. 😉
Forgive my ignorance but with a floor cabinet why the 1/4 inch reveal on the sides? Wouldn’t that create a void of wasted space in between the cabinets?
I know it's been some time since you asked this question , but I would like to know if you have an answer to this? I wish he would've explained why in this video.
My guess is it leaves some room for the un- squareness of walls. The cabs (boxes)are square. Leaving some room for tweaking and lining up the face frames allows this to have space to compensate for unsquareness of walls both back and sides.
You stated you like for the rails and stiles to be 1.5 inches. You also stated how you like to have the stiles overhang the cabinet frame on each side by 1/4 inch. So if your cabinet side is 3/4 inch and you overhang each side by 1/4 inch, that adds up to 1.25 inches, not 1.5 inches. What am I missing?
The face frame overhangs the outsides by 1/4 inch and over hangs the inside by 1/2 inch add this together and then 3/4” for the cabinet sides you get 1.5 inches 🤙🏼
When it comes to installing cabinet door handles (either knobs or pulls), they are always placed on the opposite side from the door hinges. You'll specifically want to place them anywhere between 1'' and 4'' from the top or bottom edge of the door.
" they are always placed on the opposite side from the door hinges." That's a given, if you want to be able to open the door. Other than that, you can put them anywhere you want them.
The cabinets are screwed together through the face frame to sort of form one unit. It also makes it easier to install filler pieces (a board the same thickness as the face frame that goes between two cabinets or a wall and cabinet edge) when the cabinets don't fit perfectly (ex: 78 inch wall space with 2x 36inch cabinets = 72, a filler would be installed to make up for the 6 inches of empty space). Another reason for the overhang is that walls are rarely in perfect square, so you can align the face frame and adjust the back, without the overhang, it would be much harder to square the cabinet fronts. Hope this helped.
Went to my lumber yard ( no I don't buy wood at any of the Big Box Stores ) and wanted to get a bottle of glue. He didn't have anything but the small bottles. I asked him why and he told me that almost no one uses glue anymore. That's nuts!!! Face frame screws are good but the real strength of the joint comes from a good wood glue. The Kreg company said that the screws were a replacement for wood clamps and one needed glue for the best joint. Wow, I think that we all use the same glue brush - our index finger!!! Love spacer blocks, no problems!!! i too do a face frame the width that you use but I do it for a different reason. I have the face frame flush so I can use a piece of 3/4 plywood as a filler from the front to the back of the cabinet so I can use the drawer slides that I like.

If I place three carcasses together, how do I make face frames for them? Do I make it as a big one unit? or do I make a face frame for each carcass? If latter, face frame width between carcass gets too wide? So do I make narrow width face frame (stile) where two vertical carcasses are placed each other? I have search this extensively, but no answer. . . .
May I ask who set up your shop with all of the vacuum hoses into each machine and the bench layouts that accompany each piece of equipment? What type of vacuum do you use for the shop, I don't see the vacuum listed in your products list.
If the plywood isn’t exactly 3/4 and the face frames overhangs 1/4 on each side are you making the box width exact to a size that gives you 1/4 overhang?
How can you have 1/4" overhang when your cabinet sides are 3/4" and the face frame is 1 1/2" in width? Are you using 3/8" overhang on both inside and outside, or 1/4" overhang on outside of cabinet and 3/4" on inside of cabinet?
Thank you for the share, very much appreciated. My wife and I are building a Skoolie bus and this absolutely will be how I build the kitchen and even bedroom closet and dressers. Super clear and easy instructions A+ thanks again!
I’ve watched a lot of carcass build videos but so far none have showed how to attach the top and what material. I think plywood is not the best choice because of the edges showing along the sides (unless there is a way to do so, but have not seen a video). Also, on a very narrow, deep carcass (12” x 40”), how can you even get to the inside to attach the top since the back panel is already in place? Sorry if these are questions that have simple answers but my mind is not a sharp as it once was.
Do you sand the edges of your styles and rails or run them through the jointer after cutting to width? I always have circular and/or burn marks on edges of material after running through the table saw.
Yessir it was I just never really finished. I’m getting ready to make a new one with a video coming out soon. I love the one from shop nation just a few things I want to tweek 🤫
@@eastcarolinawoodworks think that people who are far less experienced than you are watching this video and the others you do. They may not know about kickback and all the other risks involved in using a table saw. @StumpyNubs has some excellent and scary video's on the subject.
Hey, thanks for the video! (1) In the video where you built the carcass you said it was 24" wide because that is standard, but added 1/4" to past the 24" carcass which would exceed the standard 24" you are going for. Yet your drawing shows the face frame is 24". (2) I'm also confused by why you want the face frames 1/4 inch wider on the sides than the carcass to begin with?
The reason for the face frame over hanging the cabinet carcuss is for scribing and or to offset any slight adjustments that are needed. It’s pretty standard in the cabinet world. My face frame is always the size of my cabinet needed. For example if I need a 24” cabinet my face frame will be 24” wide but my carcuss will be 23 1/2” wide to allow for 1/4” overhang of the face frame on both sides of the carcuss. Hope this makes sense!
@@eastcarolinawoodworks OK, if I understand you correctly, best practice is to size your face frame the actual size needed and size the carcass 1/4" less on both sides to allow room for variation in installing the completed cabinet. I did not know that and also thought you said you were making the carcass 24" so I was confused. Cheers!
Depth for pocket holes is determined by material thickness. The kreg pocket hole jigs have a guide on it. I use 1 1/4 pocket hole screws for all my joinery with 3/4 material 👍🏻

Why leave the 1/4" overhang on the outside of the carcass? If you butt against something (wall or another cabinet) won't there be a gap?

The cabinets are screwed together through the face frame to sort of form one unit. If each cabinet has 1/4” over hang on the outside how do they fit together side by side?
Face frames line up and are attached via screws through the face frame 👍🏻
wondering if you still have your fingers two years later after seeing how you use your table saw

How about a corner cabinet build? Not many on here.
You had me nervous about your fingers that close on the table saw. I use a push piece. Table saw is the only tool i have that scares me when i use it.
Yea I’m trying to be better lol 👍🏻
@@eastcarolinawoodworks think that people who are far less experienced than you are watching this video and the others you do. They may not know about kickback and all the other risks involved in using a table saw. @StumpyNubs has some excellent and scary video's on the subject.
You can buy S2S-1E lumber if you don't have a jointer
Nice construction but did Bourbon Moth sign off on you copying his schtick?
Cheers!
@@derrickbaranowsky5715 that is correct! Sorry if my voiceover delivery wasn’t exactly precise. Still working on getting better 👍🏻
@@eastcarolinawoodworks No worries... you've got a fine ability to teach the craft sir. I look fwd to more videos!
@@derrickbaranowsky5715 thanks for the positive response and I hope to keep the good content coming!
Is there a reason you don't let the face frames out 1/4" on each side?
That’s exactly what I do. I let my face frame overhang my box by 1/4” on both sides 👍🏻
How deep are your pocket holes and what size pocket screw do you use when constructing cabinets and face frames.
Depth for pocket holes is determined by material thickness. The kreg pocket hole jigs have a guide on it. I use 1 1/4 pocket hole screws for all my joinery with 3/4 material 👍🏻
For making sure the edge is square, if you buy s4s, shouldn't that already be taken care of?
How do you keep the face frame from splitting when screwing it together? I’m 1 for 4 attempts 🤦🏻♀️
Just curious....how do you build the cabinet? There arent any dados for the ends to go into
Well never mind...😂
