I had an aggressive Golden Retriever. A big, beautiful male. He was VERY protective of my yard. To a fault. He got along well enough with other dogs, until I showed up. Same with other people. He never actually harmed anyone but he was intimidating.

This dog must have been through hell when he was a puppy.
It’s usually the case. When owners are neglectful or abusive to them as puppies they become traumatized and become very defensive
