I get the feeling SNK made SamSho IV's story to explain the "bullshit" of a good Amakusa suddenly existing and sacrificing himself in the end of SamSho II. Despite the mess of the saga being so out of order chronologically, I find II had the best lore imo.
Shizumaru is one of my favorites in the series, it is nice to see a story from him and I do like how he is the apprentice of Haohmaru, and I like how his fighting styles advances as he initially used mostly his umbrella to fight, but later used his sword that he rarely used. Just a question, whatever happened to him after the events of Zankuro and the evil Amakusa? Also it is a sad story that many have to die at the end of II.
I love how in this series, the writers used later installments as prequels to give body to the lore of a game they didn't know would be so succesful. It just feels nice to think they probably didn't know it'd do so good, and then decided to make a creative effort through later games to make a cohesive story. Fckn love this series.

In terms of timeline Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X happens decades later but still in the same century. But from an outside look, the set of references/inspirations in terms of visual and story are Shizumaru > Kenshin (but in moves, there's a bit of Ukyo influence), Haohmaru > Hiko (the master), Genjuro > Shishio. The first correlations are made by me, but they are pretty obvious... But the last one was confirmed directly by Ruroken's author. He is known for being a big Samsho fanboy, the series was at its peak with Samsho 2, shortly before Ruroken debuted. Genjuro inspired Shishio's normal looks, before he was burned of course.

No one can even dare challenge him. He is a random mid-boss in SS2, and he is incredibly strong. Oh, and his flags are pretty sharp!

Honestly I could understand Samurai Shodown's chronology much better than Street Fighter.
