The tales of ash saga is the 3rd chapter of the king of fighters series. It covers the games KOF 2003, KOF 11 and KOF 13.
It tells the story of its new main protagonist, Ash Crimson, and his conflict with the sacred treasures team, Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami and Chizuru Kagura.

Man, you'd think after they realize that KOF tournaments are just a front to steal fighting energy to awaken some thing or another, most of the other teams would just stop going to them.
The prize money must be that good I guess.
Lol, Of Course It's not like They're actually brainwashed each season. Of course they know shady things happen each tournament - character development -, they more likely go with the - Ok, Now What Problem we have to solve... oh, the money don't forget the money, it will be good -. Imagine it as DragonBall, and each season being like Picollo Tournament, Cell Tournament or Boo Tournament with the big bad at the end, and each time Z fighters enter to help Goku or Vegeta to save the day...
Most likely the other participants (outside of the agents and hero teams) never progress that far to know that kof is connected to any of the events that happen. Only the finalists are the ones taken to a special venue and learn the true intentions of the tournament.
Everyone else just go home and try to do better at the next one.

I think except for KoF97, which the tournament pretty much stop half way because of orochi Leona or Iori, all shady things only happen after the tournament concluded.
so to most fighter in the universe, KoF is a legit world class tournament for challenging one self plus paid vacation.... so if you got the invitation, you pretty much have no reason not to join...
It's weird cause without Ash existing, that would mean Chizuru and Iori would never have lost their powers, but here Vice and Mature still had to give Iori his powers back.
Because the timeline itself hasn't changed, only everyone's memories.

I think that was the hardest thing to swallow about Ash. You see that memory of him and Elizabeth and you see that he did everything to keep her safe. He sacrificed himself for Elizabeth and Elizabeth only.

Why didn't you mention that Saiki is also a Will of Gaia? He's Orochi's equivalent in the west and he controls time while Orochi controls space. Also, Saiki didn't absorb Mukai's power. He just used his time powers to age him real fast and kill him.

According to official SNK canon, Ash didn't really sacrifice his existence, but rather his memory is was wiped clean when he "sacrificed" himself to stop Saiki. After Verse was defeated(KOF XIV) and all the people who has died during the Fatal Fury/KOF series were resurrected, Elizabeth and Kukri located Ash in the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains. So that means he could come back at some point as the series go on. That explains why he appears in KOF all-stars.

I remember Kof13 was one of my first fighting games since it was free for ps plus members...it would be from that game that would make me delve into more and more fighting games, making me a dedicated fan. I owe my entire competitive career, passion, and drive to Kof13 and learning about the lore leading to it makes me appreciate it even more. I am so excited for kof15 and hope to make strides in it. Thank you so much for putting together these lore videos.

Ah Adelheid, I hope he gets to officially join KOF as part of a team in the future. I hope they find a way to maintain that silly face that his suspender buttons, belt, and pant pockets form. It's always been my favorite part of his character design, it's hilarious.

These were very helpful for understanding the lore, thank you. KOF is actually my favorite fighting game series closely followed by Mortal Kombat and Smash Bros. So many characters however it's kinda hard to keep track of who is good and who is evil. A lot of the characters seem to be more like anti-heros not straight up evil, but also not really goody two shoes
Fun Fact: Saiki actually uses his time manipulation abilities when you fight him. When? When he grabs you. Pay attention to the background. It turns gray, as if time has stopped while he's beating the sh!t out of your character.

I agree that Iori 13 is cooler, but Iori with his flames is just league superior as a character. Everybody and their mothers used EX Iori when he was released, and for a good reason.
What SNK should've done since 2003:
Postpone the Ash Saga to the side, focus on the Maximum Impact games first, and then later on start on the Ash Saga to release them for 7th-gen consoles.
Still upsets me how Ash pretty much ceases to exist now. He was just so c o o l, and while his last actions were pretty heroic and made for a good end to his arc, it's still sad to know that he's not coming back, at least canonically (Unless, something regarding all these souls coming back in 14, including his soul being found by Kukri and Elizabeth, hints that he may be come back canonically)

I think Iori and Kyo also remembered ash because of the close ties they had with him (and you can say that iori was very close with ash in terms of hate) it was hinted in the japan team ending for KOF XIII
They pretty much were pissed of what Ash did to Chizuru so it makes sense

Great vids. I got into the kof series late starting with 99 so I didn't know much about the orochi saga and I found the ash saga confusing and hard to follow. These vids help me get a complete understanding of the entire series even the some stuff I didn't know about the nest saga. Could you do maximum impact and 2016 even though they aren't cannon? Just for the hell of it. 🙏😶
The NESTs Saga might be my favorite saga, but KoF XI was my favorite game in the series. I... wholeheartedly admit loving to play as Momoko in the console version....

I finally understand KOF 13 opening sequence
Ash is such a good protagonist, personal favourite. Love how well he juxtaposes kyo, k', and pretty much every fighting game protagonist at the time of release. If you wanted to write a heroic protagonist who was cool, caclulating and manipulative in a world where the norm is the hot tempered, brash and honest, this is how you do it.
The last kof game i want every last character to be in there.
Ash seems fairly underutilized and sort of strangely characterized for a supposed protagonist.
Another thing that bothers me about the Ash saga is how it wasted a lot of great ideas for the other teams.
For example the ending for the Art of Fighting Team in 2003 was looking very promising with Takuma being attacked by a mysterious person...only to find out that Takuma was just sick in the next game 😑
That was such a dissapointment.
Another bad example is that the subplot with Ron and Kensou's Dragon Spirit was forgotten once again...
The ending for the New Psycho Soldier in XI implied they were going to continue with that plot in the next game....but at the end we only had a Super Sentai parody ending in KOF XIII 🤦♂️

Yeah its annoying they dropped those. It's a shame the development for the XII and XIII sprites were harder than they imagined and took way too much time. Its why some assets were reused like Hwa with Joe.
I have a feeling they wanted to finish those subplots but couldn't or didn't want to for some reason like the Takuma thing.
