I'd love to see you use the grille in a game. I can never make them fit. Mine always seem to get targeted by tanks before they can take out enough infantry to recoup their costs.
It really is a tricky unit to use. It's just so squishy and inaccurate that, like you said, it rarely ever comes out with more than you spent on it. Occasionally though, you can get lucky. The best thing that I can advise using it for is exploiting lack of AT guns or tanks. Most of the divs that get it also have a gratuitous number of half-tracks that can be used to, shall we say, scout aggressively; using their bodies to show you AT sightlines. With those in mind, you can start to punish inf with the Grille.
