I bought the DLC after knowing Smart Orders coming to the game. For me, I like large single-player matches but micromanaging was a big pain and I felt I was just clicking away rather than actually playing the game. I can't wait for this update!
Yeah, it's the problem with games of this scale and poor AI. You just simply don't have enough time to actually micro everything. How you supposed to micro 20-50 units, with enemy attacking in 3-4 areas at once, where you're defending another 2 areas there are no attacks, yet. ETC. It's just too much. Add in you have to bring up supply, have to micro arty and planes, micro tanks or they waste themselves, etc. etc. Like, I love the scale, but there is something to be said for the older Men of War games where you just command a platoon at most.
I love RTS games since Dune 2000 and I've played most of those RTS you can think of but I sadly gave up playing years ago! However I still enjoy playing occasionally even tho I mostly watch streamers and youtuers like Vulcan playing them. I realized I don't have time or patience to learn to play anymore... I found the micro aspect of SD2 too intensive and I spent most of the time clicking here and there nonstop because my units were somehow brain dead and couldn't do anything for themselves + my lack of management/expertise of course. The multiplayer aspect was even less enjoyable for logical reasons. This update is more than welcome for people with low performance (like me) that want to enjoy a match or two without feeling lost after 2 minutes into the game. Since microing 20 units isn't the same as microing 60 + planes + arty or microing every infantry/tanks and just leave arty on auto, or planes on auto or whatever... I've read some comments saying that this update will help noobs and the game now will play itself, and it's somehow true... bad that's not necessarily bad like they seem to be implying. I think more people like me, that don't have enough time to learn every little secret (counters/unit stats/map key-point positions) will now want to join multiplayer matches with more confidence and will benefit themselves a little from these smart orders.... don't worry "pro" fellas/unit stats nerds, I'm sure you will still be able to blitzkrieg us with your cats and counter us with the best choice of unit/strategy only you after playing 4000 hours of SD and Wargame know, but at least we (noobs) will able to last a bit longer and maybe some of us will stand a chance against your 600 actions per minute, and of course you can always say you've lost because now noobs have a liitle help from the AI so it won't hurt your pride.
Ahhh dune 2000 for the mega drive right thats the game that got me into rts also. Well i am no noob to this game more like standard but the counter battery one is a definite choice for me as i really cant be bothered to see where are shooting from so it kinda helps everyone at the end of the day the more enjoyable the more you will play right, plus this is a month after your post and now more ppl than ever play onlone
Dune2000. The game that made me an addict when i was 8yo or so^^ Sneaked into the office of my dad at night to play the game on the glorious 486. Automation is not bad in RTS, only bad Generals try to micro everything in rl. I am glad if RTS reflect that fact more. It is not enjoyable for most people havin to babysit everything in such games. And i was an very active Wargame RD player with 2k hours playtime and played mostly 10v10. Its just not fun have games decided by the ability to click on things very fast rather than the actual strategic abilities. This was a major flaw for Wargame, because it was too much for many people to actually handle the huge ammount of different units. It could have been easily three times more popular with a more accessible UI and some automation.
This update is a huge step in the right direction in my oppinion. I would like to have a shoot and scoot order for Arty Units. (Advanced counter battery oder) If with the next update the supply trucks provide units in their area automatically, even better.
@@ivvan497 Don't you think it makes sense that troops should have more autonomy? You're a general giving objectives, not telling a squad to move 2 meters to the right.
@@ivvan497 The wargame series was so successful because it emphasized strategy and tactical abilities. You didn't need to be able to do 1000 clicks per minute to be good. The SD series did a huge dive in these terms and i welcome the changes.
@@ThEPwNCreAtoR no, im a player playing rts video game. I want to play the game and not watch the game play itself. I mean, with the exception of SP i dont see myself using smart orders. And if you are someone who has trouble with micro you will still get obliterated by good players.
This is really promising. I always felt Wargame should have QoL stuff like this. I liked the ability to select multiple units and then hold right-click to make them form a defense line, but that only worked for straight lines. Would be awesome to be able to just draw lines and arrows on the map like you can in Hearts of Iron IV. Setting things like fallback points and objectives to advance to in advance, and then be able to give them orders like "Retreat" and "Advance" or "Advance but stop and return fire when fired upon" via hotkey would be hugely useful, too. I hope SD2 adds numbered units like Ground Control, too, at one point, with voice lines like "2-1 has contact", "4-4 taking fire", or "unit lost, 4-2".
They just need to hire you already. When I think SD I think Vulcan. Love your stuff man. Keep it up and thank you !! Definitly my favorite RTS game now. Hopefully they keep making this game down the road.
Great commentary and introduction to the Smart Orders. Ironic that Defensive Fire for arty will probably be most effective for offensive operations as you put if. Looking forward to more SD 2 content with the upcoming DLC and updates!
Having just come from SD1 the counter-battery order will be my favourite I expect. Autostrike for fighters will be good too. Thanks for the breakdown, these are really good to know and will no doubt be very useful for a micro-hater like me.
I've played SD1 for a good bit but once i started MP, i was lost as i couldn't keep up with all the microing i was used to do while the game was paused or in bullet time when playing SP. Got SD2 on my whishlist for a long time and bought it during this year's winter sale, but still was hesitant to dive into it and play. I dudn't had a clue about smart orders. They are the sole reason why the game was worth it to me. I'm loving it. And btw. thanks for all the tutorials. Awesome work. Subscribed
great explanations, thanks Vulcan :) These orders look wayyy better than I was expecting. Giving the order from spawn then auto unloading before arrival omg !!!
these are actually awesome additions, I usually play coop with my roommate against very difficult AI waves. It gets to the point where it is too much to micro so these commands are great
Thanks for the video. These new orders look amazing. The game requires so much micromanagement that strategy often gets overlooked as you desperately click away. These will help give players a bit of time to think about what they are trying to achieve. Are there hotkeys for these new commands?
I have been on the fence about the Steel Division series for a while, watching your videos always tempts me, but I haven't yet purchased because I was turned off by the micromanagement that was needed... This seems like the perfect balance Tactical Management, and now I'm excited to get into this title. I mean c'mon, Arty and Fighters should pretty much always be set on 'just do your job'... imho. Great video, as always.
Vulcan, these tutorials really helped me. Was getting my ass completely handed to me by just the medium AI and was wondering where I was going wrong. It would be good if you could do some tutorials on the armoury and division builder. Specifically surrounding why you pick certain units and how you should combo them with others for best results. There is so much stuff there I honestly feel lost with it.
Hey Vulcan ! I just started the game and It was really helpful ! Thank you ! But I believe the community still needs more tutorial videos. A gameplay with tutorial perhaps ? cheers
Just bought the Total Conflict Edition of this game but was really nervous about having to Micro too much cause I don't like frantically going over my frontlines non-stop...then I saw this was added into the game and now I am so dang excited for my game to download cause now I don't feel like I have to focus on the whole damn battlefield.
If half of these work half as well as I hope, it will still be a useful addition. Might even affect division setups somewhat, which is always interesting.
The artillery order will almost certainly incentivize players to bring more in as the burden of micromanaging them will be alleviated greatly. It will level up the playing field in single player vs the efficient AI counter-battery fire. It will be interesting to see if players chose to bring in more artillery in multiplayer or if the increased counter-battery will act as a deterrent to spending points on expensive arty units.
Awesome video, thanks for covering this. Quick request however, is it possible to get time stamps added for the different sections for quick access. Looking forward to see additional content from you.
Is there some way to learn how to play by having a battle with three tanks or are all battles on this kind of scale? Feels like being appointed the director of an international fast food chain before you even own a frying pan.
I wouldn't say I was particularly good at RTS games, with this especially I get super into micromanaging certain sections of battle, either gawping at how well it's going or what a mess I'm making... 50/50
"Hold the position" do this allow my units to attack the ennemy by themselves instead of staying here doing nothing while their allies one hundred metters further are dying?
I wonder why they call it RTS when infact its RTT, Real time tactical game, and not Real time Strategy game, because the fact that you have to tell each unit what to do, in a real strategy game you simply tell the units to take that area and hold it, and all the units will do the tactics themselfs... the proper term is RTT not RTS :D An example of a true RTS is Hearts of iron if anyone wonder, cause the units there are taking care of all the tactics themselfs and you only control where they go
They are not always "smart". They do not unload necessarily far from the enemy, especially if you do not have recon unit ahead. Your "smart" units may get blown up by AT gun without even being unloaded.

good to have a choice in making fighters into interceptors; though I think we'll be seeing a lot of (auto launched) fighters being baited into AA.
