Driving on the Bay Bridge when Loma Prieta earthquake hit

  • On Oct. 17, 1989, ABC7 News reporter Leslie Brinkley was on her way to a routine assignment when her story and life changed in 15 seconds. Loma Prieta shook with such violent force it tore the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in two while she and her crew were crossing it. In the hours and minutes that followed, Brinkley stood at the edge of the broken section of the bridge and reported on the stories of survival, rescue and tragedy that unfolded on live television. abc7ne.ws/2nKYIyO

      I was in Loyalton up by Truckee at the sawmill starting up a new steam turbine generator. The control room shook and swayed a bit but I thought it was a steam hammer in the deaerator tank. Some guy later came in and said that San Francisco was destroyed by a huge quake. I left and got on Highway 80 and did 110 mph, twice the national 55 mph speed limit at the time. I passed CHP patrol cars but they didn't stop me. I got to the Benecia bridge in about 2 hours. Amazing. Everybody was fine at home but really scared and the power was out. Before he end of the year I installed a whole house automatic 12 volt lighting system in case a quake hits at night.

      @brideofsnape2046 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pieces of the Richmond-San Rafael tend to fall off and land on cars these days, or so they say. I once took the ferry which goes underneath it, and out of curiosity I looked up as it passed overhead....OMG. Do NOT do this. So friggin' rickety! Such a patchwork of cheap-looking fixits and shoddy repair/reinforcement work! I will never drive on that bridge again. The Golden Gate is the queen of bridges. I trust her, pretty much. Not so much the others. Even the sixteen year old Carquinez Bridge (aka the Zampa Bridge), a beautiful suspension span, was built with some of the same crap steel used in the new Bay Bridge. Luckily the issues are minor compared to what's going on with the Bay Bridge, but still. They literally don't build 'em like they used to.

For years it was new stories about how they were gonna do this and that and it was just one big political mess using our taxpayer dollars. Finally they started the 11yr process of building the new span. It's a good thing we didn't have any really big quakes from 10/17/89 to 9/2/13 cause it could've been catastrophic.

      Wendy C Well that’s an infrastructure issue. I was referring to the constant earthquakes, mudslides and wildfires that endanger every Californian.

      Yes you're correct. I was looking at it as 'stuff unexpectedly happens'. We definitely don't have the extremes that California has

      Well, where are you from, Alabama? Or maybe Florida? Idk but you are definitely clueless if you think California "messes things up." We have one of the strongest economies, not in the country, but in the world. Get it together, and don't hate on what you obviously don't understand.

      eagletmars that’s true. The only really bad things we have is the wildfires

      eagletmars Dude I live in California, it’s a freaking mess.... Roads in horrible condition, homeless, drunks and drug addicts pissing and crapping on the sidewalks. You say we have the best economy? Not in the interior of the state.

      @@eagletmars I was born and raised in Seattle, another beautiful area ruined by liberal policies. Basically the same issues that plague California. Yes the bubonic plague is a problem in California. I moved to Colorado and it's much better here. However California is literally infested with disease, feces, homelessness, crime, and has some of the highest taxes and lowest living standards out of any metropolis region. In other words you could call the coasts of California a S***hole without exaggerating one bit. I visited my sister multiple times when she was a student at UC Berkeley, She lived in Wesley house (across the street from campus on telegraph ave.) leaving her apartment, you'd have to lookout for intravenous needles and often physically step over sleeping homeless people who were blocking the entrance to buildings, literally 30 feet from campus. A majority of the Berkeley police quit since they weren't able to enforce the law, thanks to their mayor. My sister was there when antifa nearly burned down the campus and she was almost attacked trying to help an injured person. The rent, the tolls for the bridges, the traffic are all unbelievable, there's violence and filth in the nicest of places. Big companies have stopped hosting events in big cities like San Francisco Etc. Long term residents are moving to Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon etc. And the people there are fed up with liberal policies that turned California from the "Eureka" state to a place were even tourist think twice before visiting. There is plenty more wrong with California, especially their exhaustive regulations impeding our fundamental American values but I think I've said enough. California is a great example of liberal politics "messing everything up"

      Berzerkeley...a liberal filthy shithole. San FranCesspool...where to stick the enema nozzle in California, a prolapsed shithole.
      Morage, Orinda, Lafayette, no shit on sidewalks, good people, everything clean, not one needle on a sidewalk. You are judging the entire state by Sodom and Gomorrah. Didn't you ever drive to the other side of the tunnels? Its a beautiful state run by self serving pirates calling themselves elected officials.

    Many people don't remember that 30 years later a earthquake hit california again during the baseball season almost to the point. The oakland A's lost 2 series Cincy and LA and won the World series in '89 after the earthquake. Los Angeles Dodgers who beat the A's in '88 were in a same scenario. They got beat in '17 by houston ,'18 by boston and now they were primed to win in '19 but this scenario was spread out. The Dodgers lost before they got to the world series but the earthquake came the 4th of july and a larger one came later under 24 hrs that shook southern California all the way to southern Nevada (Las Vegas). The earthquake in '89 reached all the way from the SF-Oak bay area down to Los Angeles. Ironically Los Angeles won in 2020 under another disaster the covid plague. Didn't any of the Baseball experts see this coming?

    Iam sure the local government was told you need a new bridge because the current one is not up to date standard and it could collapse. Local Govt says as usual it's been there for years nothing bad is going to happen besides there has been earthquakes before. Suddenly lots of people die and are injured NOW! they'll say yes we need a new bridge. This happens all of the time the warning is foretold but since the politician doesn't want to cough up money but gives it to his rich buddies.
