I share this every time I hear that someone is having a difficult time with hornworms. About 4 decades ago I learned this control method from a neighbor, used it ever since with 100% effectiveness! It's gross but it's natural and it WORKS.
    - Collect at least 4-5 hornworms and squish them in a glass jar (the gross part). Cover the jar and let the smashed carcasses "rot" for about a week.
    - Put the rotted stuff into a sprayer and add water (exact amounts aren't important, just dilute).
    - Spray all over, under and around the plants.
That's it! This repels ALL hornworms, so your garden is now safe from their voracious appetites. Oh, and since hornworms don't limit the eating to tomato plants, put it on your whole garden. It isn't harmful to anyone, any pets or any plants. It just repels the little buggers.

Epic Gardeners, Kevin and Jacques, recently did a comparison of 14 bagged potting mixes. Several they thought would be great were actually sub-par this year. Jess is prob spot on that companies haven’t let the bark/wood chips compost long enough before they added it to the mixes…
I usually swear by happy frog in the brown bag, but because it costs so much, I switched to the regular yellow miracle grow potting mix. I was floored because in the same season, the miracle grow plants did so much better. I don’t like non-organic potting mixes, but in a pinch it worked out great for my gteenstalks.

After the situation with the contaminated compost a couple years back, I've been adamant about making my own compost. I still buy compost every growing season to make up for what I can't make but I always amend with my own compost with all the potting mix I make. I always sift (1/2" mesh) out the big bits for every product (peat moss, compost, my own compost) and put those big bits back into the compost bin to break down over the season. I pick out all the bugs from my compost and put back into the old compost bin. Is this time consuming? Yes. But my plants look awesome and I know what goes into the soil.
I noticed with the cow manure compost, it's good to sift because some of the balls in the compost are balls of poop that haven't broken down on the inside. So you're putting in hot stuff into your soil mix. Always always sift.

I grabbed my biggest garden pot, pulled all the weeds and clumps of roots I could, and added bag soil and compost. This year, things are growing well. I'm still very much in the classroom stage, but this feels like progress. All lessons are of value. ❤

in my country we roast the eggplants, peel them, drain them and store them usually whole in the freezer for use during winter (the last few years I've also seen them commercially frozen like this, so it seems to be an actual thing, not just an empirical practice)...it's not *exactly* the same as fresh, but almost (also, have you tried putting the eggplants whole either on the Blackstone or on a bbq, so they get the charred exterior whilst cooking the interiors? the smokiness makes them even better than roasted in the oven)

About preserving eggplant, I make a Filipino dish that starts with grilled then smashed eggplant. I have grilled the eggplant and then froze it by itself to use it later in the winter. It turned out good. A lot if liquid comes off of it when you defrost the eggplant so you have to make sure to drain it well before using in a dish.

Omg we are so much alike! No wonder I resonate so much with you! I have so many hobbies and have such a hard time with organizing (ADD) because I get overwhelmed. I have been watching you promote Greenstalks for years and finally got 2 for myself for Mother’s Day. I used a mix of Happy Frog, our own compost, perlite, pro-mix, and another local soil and my Greenstalks are indescribable as to how lush they are. You would be mind blown! Gardening can be challenging in Colorado. My Greenstalks are doing so well that I got one for my husband for Father’s Day, the “inventor’s bundle”. I just got some seeds in it yesterday. I am so excited to see that one fill out too. Thanks for all your inspiration over the years. I wish I could have your success but I’m not good at filming myself or being at a computer. You are living the dream! I’m not as young as you, but I haven’t given up on someday having land and a cow or two. For now, I’m just an urban homesteader with a few chickens and a garden. Jess, I have a hard time sorting through all the things in my small home. I'm overwhelmed a lot of the time and find myself with a lot of unchecked to-do lists. I'm in no way a minimalist but I started listening to the minimal mom podcast and it has been very encouraging for me. In case you've never heard of it, give it a listen. It could help you to feel motivated!

I’m a gardener who doesn’t love bugs either. I respect them in their space/place in our ecosystem, I even invite and welcome them.. but 🤢. I’ve been picking potato beetle egg and larvae off my tomatillos .. so gross 😂

Oh my you just explained me! I tried today, but I realized this Winter I bought ALOT of blankets, throw blankets. But I have grown very fond of those bags that you can stuff with so much and vacuum the air out to compress them. Well they’ve been my lifesaver with my seasonal things, that I still want lol…

We have a lot of bats around our house and property. I believe that is why we don’t have a lot of mosquitos. Do you notice any at dusk? I live in Piedmont, SC ( between Anderson and Greenville). I started watching you before you moved to Batesville area. I was so excited you are so close so I know when to plant things around the same time as you. I love watching your videos and it has helped me be a better gardener. I love how you have transformed the bare land into all the beautiful spaces you have now! It is very inspiring !!! I have outgrown raised bed garden I started 3 years ago and this year have expanded into a huge in ground garden, berry and orchard area. It is a work in progress, but i have it pictured in my head and it will be beautiful !

I live in Tucson, AZ. Our entire backyard is covered with shade cloth and that is where my garden is. Because of the shade cloth I am able to grow through the Summer when temps can reach 115 degrees here. Plants still have a rough go of it and it matters what you are planting when here. But, with the cloth it can be done!

I picked a hornworm off of one of my Greenstalk’s yesterday. It is only the 2nd or 3rd one in my 7 years of growing! I bought 2 tomato plants from a nursery and I think it hitched a ride with them. I start most from seed and I feel like it has made a difference in my ecosystem. I had no idea why my tomato plant was looking so homely but there he was, chewing on leaves and looking me right in the eyes without a care in the world!

I had a hard time growing anything the first year I gardened. It was the soil. I also found out that the right soil makes all the difference. This year everything is so lush and beautiful. If you are having trouble with poor growth, insects problems and other problems, please don't give up. If you feed the microbes in your soil instead of feeding your plants most of your problems disappear. If you are getting bitten by mosquitos you may be low on vitamin B. Mosquitos don't like vitamin B complex. If I take it regularly, they never bother me. They don't like onions and garlic either. It makes them sick. I grow my tomatoes in the shade of a hedge and they get partial sun. They are doing so well this year. We are just starting to eat boysenberries, blueberries, and cherry tomatoes. They are totally worth the wait. I love Basil. Can you tell I have A.D.D. too? I bless you.

I had a major surgery with some difficulties last year. 😅I STILL gardened. Last season and this season have been a hands-off approach. Started the seeds, planted them, let the family help water and fertilize. No fussing over trimming suckers or lower branches or plucking weeds. I’m surprised at how well my gardens have done without me fussing over everything. Plants just wanna grow. I live not terribly far from you. Surprisingly, I have not had much of a pest issue interfere with a good harvest.

I grow real food and flowers exclusively in 10 Greenstalks and 4 raised garden beds. This year I added 4 Greenstalks (two pink full of flowers now) and two raised garden bed, so I did have to use new soil. I used Promix, add worm castings, and granular feed before planting. I have liquid fertilizer, which I am about to use based on when I planted. But it is a science, what works, what doesn't work, so I take a lot of time keeping notes. I'm 100% responsible for the success or failure of my garden. You and Matthew have provided so much good advice and inspiration, that I continue to grow my garden. Trying to convince myself I don't need to take advantage of Greenstalks anniversary sale...

Honestly, have adhd here also. I find with a baby now, I have to go through longer cycles of collecting dopamine through focusing more on being outside and tending the garden and set a time when its really hot and we need to stay inside to cool down to tackle a big organization project. It took me a long time to even begin to understand what "dopamine mining" actually is for me and why it matters. It's also just what is necessary to try to live healthily and seasonally for some of us.

I put up shade cloth over my garden in Austin, and it did help keep the plants alive through summer, but they didn’t produce until it cooled down again in the fall. The unexpected best thing about it though - it made it so much more pleasant for me as the gardener. Super noticeable temp drop under the shade cloth. Helped me keep up with weeding and planting during the high heat of summer.

❤I just early morning watered my back yard garden, porch containers and greenstalks with fascination that I have lush plants with old soil and new soil. I used Miracle Grow Potting Soil (yellow bag) in new containers and amend with fish fertilizer in water once a month. I don’t usually get hornworms since I winter feed birds sunflower seeds in my garden area and plant garlic in many beds over winter so between the left over garlic smell in the soil and wild birds even in my gardens without summer seed. Squirrel - I make a new list every day on a post it from what’s on my day planner and mind to get done. I don’t finish everything, but it gives me a reminder by my coffee cup as to whatI’m supposed to be doing. 😂
