She needs the Kennel Tech position in order to get into veterinary school. There is a 500 hr minimum for applying, but my class average was 3800 hours. The slight money increase now will kill her high income future. Her immediate focus should be on lowering her expenses rather than increasing her income. Kennel techs are generally paid minimum wage, so if she gets to the $22/hr discussed, she will be making above the vast majority of fully licensed veterinary technicians. All things considered, she is actually doing well income-wise for her larger career plan.

I believe her main problem is that her identity is so HEAVILY tied to being a “model”/pageant girl. Quitting, or even going on some sort of budget in regards to it is like telling her she can’t be herself. It feeds her ego. My great grandpa used to always say to never buy anything through financing even homes. He owned a house with 1 acre in the back that he had 3 cows on and a 2,000 acre ranch with tons of cows. Granted he invested early in Microsoft and Cabbage Patch dolls early before they exploded but he never bought anything through financing and had the property and money to invest long before he died. When he died he was worth over $150,000,000. If you think about the fact that he never borrowed money in his life and wasn't paying that interest it makes a lot more sense why he had the money in the first place to invest, even if he didn't get extremely lucky with stocks he still would have been able to retire very comfortably.

So I bought used because I was always taught to not spend the extra cash on a brand new car. My personal rule of thumb is to buy a car that is at most 3 years old since it will be considerably cheaper and is still not crazy old. Of course buy from someone reliable and get a mechanics approval. I am in a blessed situation where I am living at home with my parents so I do not have rent but I do have other expenses I pay for. When I first got the car I made sure the minimum payment was something I could manage with my income (~$50k/year) at the time. I eventually cut back on a lot of hobbies, going out to eat, and frivolous spending. I made a budget and it helped me realize that my biggest spending category was fast food. I also ended up getting a new job last year (2022, about 6 months after i got the car) that shot my income up to $60k and then again to $65k after my end of year review. I tried to make sure I kept the same spending habits and not increase unnecessary spending and at the same time I increased the frequency and amount I was putting in to my car. In short I was just very focused on paying the car off before the 2 year mark and I wasn't gonna let anything stop me. I do have other debt right now for credit cards (~$1600) but with the car note gone I can take care of that in two months easy. Sorry I basically wrote a Bible verse but this is something I have legitimately excited about.

Those considering Sofi, please be aware you need to set up direct deposit to qualify for Sofi's higher end 4.5% APY. This means you must have a direct deposit from an employer, pension or government agency to your account every 30 days to qualify for disbursements to hit your account w/ 4.5% otherwise it drops down to 1.2% APY. This may impact those struggling job to job or gig workers that aren't paid through traditional ACH payments. Those individuals could receive benefits from other institutions above 1.2% APY that require minimum balances instead of direct deposit.

Yes, this is so important to point out. Caleb should really mention this because it disqualifies a lot of people. I own my own business and don't qualify for the 4.5%. Further, SoFi uses Plaid to connect to external bank accounts. Plaid doesn't support either of the banks I use so I couldn't even transfer funds into SoFi even if I wanted the 1.2% APY. I currently have a high yield savings with Discover at 4.3%, highly recommend, a lot less hurdles to overcome.

Or researching high yield savings options on nerd wallet will help find all the best options with the highest interest rates available at that time. My Marcus account was 4.3% or so last I checked. I did taxes for a large number of model clients passed to my firm from a bookkeeper in New York City and they all spent well beyond their means. We separated them into two categories: traditional models, AKA runway models, and social media models, who would essentially agree to sell products on their pages. They don't make anywhere nearly as much as you think they do, and their expenses are sky high because they justify everything as necessary to maintain their modeling. I'm not sure how a model gets to Giselle Bundchen levels of income, but I certainly never saw one out of the hundreds whose taxes I filed.

It cost $11.99 at the restaurant (plus a tip). I went on HEB site and grabbed the costs to buy the ingredients for this same recipe and the total is $22.47. A package of sausage comes in a quantity of five links so that's 5 meals which would turn out to be basically $4.49 per meal. $22.47 vs $59.95 That's grocery shopping!
And if you dont want to eat the protein bowl for five days, you can use the sausage and kale as ingredients to duplicate Olive Garden's Zuppa Toscana soup and the quinoa can be used to make a a yogurt and berry breakfast bowl, or used for any other recipe.

Yeah she definitely doesn’t care since she has her parents’ money to fall back on.

When i got my first credit card at 18, my dad sat me down and explained that carrying a balance on a credit card is never a good idea and that the only loan you can get that's worse than carrying a balance on a credit card is a loan from the mob.

Loans from the mob are usually wayyyyy better. Under 10% almost always. It's just that it's a different kind of "collections" it goes into...and bankruptcy won't discharge it.

Carrying a balance is perfectly fine; just pay the full bill before the due date like any other bill you have. If you treat a credit card like a bill instead of being free money, it’s easy to not ruin your finances. The benefit of credit cards is they help credit score and give you cash back options on purchases.

@@radiicola3631 that's exactly what he meant, carrying a balance past the due date.

Indeed. There's a reason why college admin offices have credit card applications in them-- they want to snag the kids who _didn't_ get the talk from dad!

She obviously doesn't take her situation seriously. Beauty and entitlement come more than often hand in hand. In the best case scenario she ends up having her lifestyle being financed by some wealthy person.
