You forgot sweet. The thing that made the whole show work, the glue, was Steve Carell. The fact that he wanted to be liked and loved more than a boss was what made him endearing. You have funny shows like Seinfeld but they dont have a loyal following like the office because the central character was funny but not endearing.
That's the problem with the U.S. version of The Office. It's too schmaltzy. The original BBC The Office was raw and often times uncomfortable because it hit close to home for a lot of people. The humor was sometimes very subtle.
@@dan_hitchman007 that's why it suck..they made it too realistic..as a former office worker the uk version was too hard to watch because after hours of sitting in the office it would be too depressing to watch that show.
Michael is that one kid that comes to your birthday party when no one else will. Not to be nice or because his parents forced him, but to genuinely have a good time.
Gifted? Have you seen her painting? The building? There are shadows coming from two directions. What!? Are there two suns? Uh, last I checked that's not an office building in the Andromeda galaxy. It's totally unrealistic! There's no lines in the parking lot.
Exactly. As funny as it is, and with all the times Michael is shown to be insensitive and lacking any self awareness, they resisted the urge to make him a total clown all the time. There is a good guy in there somewhere. The episode where he's out with (I think, it's been a minute) a sales rep from another company and Jim and Pam tell him he's doing great and he realizes it's "a date" and becomes "Date Mike" is one of the best examples of this.
When he takes the award down, there's actually a rectangle of wall grime around its spot. Either the award had been up for all 3.5 seasons and had built up the dirt, or the set design people REALLY take it seriously (or both).
That's not another thoughtful comment on the quality of the painting, nor on Pam's art being so realistic and well drawn. It's a brilliant display of Michael's inability to understand art.
@@suicidebxmber1234 Naw he was saying that a picture would be just as authentic as her painting, which isn't purposely but is still an indirect compliment.
My favourite part of this is that he is being completely honest and isn't trying to make Pam feel better. He doesn't know that her self esteem was low at that point.
@@StarWarsMoments That's an interesting perspective that no one else have ever considered or publicized. They haven't because it is horribly off-base but nonetheless..
That's my ultimate takeaway also. The scene is superb because Michael is mentally a child when it comes to honesty. He doesn't do pretense and he doesn't understand that many others do that. The lovable dork. Pam is always great. IMO.
People don't understand how much a "I'm really proud of you" means to someone. You get a handful of those moments in your life, and some people never get to hear that.
Back in 2021 my ex wife left me. I fought so hard to save the marriage. I lost 50 pounds, went to therapy once every two weeks, and did everything I could to respect her space while also trying to change for us. she never came home, but one day a coworker said “everyday I see the pain you are in, and my heart breaks for you, but I want you to know that I am proud of you! Look at you! Know that you are worth it” And that one genuine hug, and comment really helped me fight alot of inner demons. I now am so much happier because I stuck it out, but man that dude really made an impact on me.
@@mrcupcake5309 It takes a lot of courage to honestly assess your shortcomings & try to fix them. It takes even more courage to stay the course when it's going poorly. But it takes real bravery to share such a painful story with others in the hope it helps someone else. And for that, sir, I'm VERY proud of you. Well done 👏👏👏 BTW congrats on losing 50 lbs, you must feel like a new man. I hope you get out there and meet the RIGHT woman (if you haven't already) 👍👍👍
“Here's my wish. I want you to meet a great guy, and I want you to be happy. My wish has come true, incidentally. Because, you've met me, and you are happy.”
Ryan... has never made a sale. And he started a FIRE trying to make a Cheesy-Pita. And, everybody thinks he's a tease He doesn't know anything, and neither do you! So, Suck On That!!!
Not to display Pams accomplishment, you're missing the point. He was proud of the fact the painting is on paper, which they sell. He didn't even understand he was being kind to her.
Ben Nahum he understood what he was doing. He was proud of Pam not just the fact that it was paper. He even said at the end of the series they were like his children. I’m a mother of 3 and honestly the greatest part of my life is my children. I feel 10x more proud when they do something they are proud of then anything I’ve ever done in my life including graduating college.
I don't know how you reflected in your comments my core beliefs about management and a manager as well. After all we spend 8hrs in an office which means more than what we spend with our family members during weekdays. To me my colleagues are my family as well. To see someone from that family getting fired breaks my heart
I have to say Michael really scored here. He was genuine, honest and sincere. Also calling her Pamcasso was like the most "dad" thing he could do aside from not only buying her piece but paying to have it framed and hanging it in public view.
It was these moments throughout the series that made Michael a redeemable and loveable character. This was one of the first moments that showed his pure heart. Those moments didn’t come too often but the impact was always huge.
@@moon-bean eh I agree but disagree. If the relationship is clearly strong then yeah stay back. I’ve been there myself and it sucks. But if you see people like Roy and Pam who were clearly just bad for each other than yeah. Keep trying, but be subtle.
What makes this scene even better is that for that entire day Michael had been taken to Ryan's business school only to be ridiculed by Ryan and his classmates and argue with him so he was in an awful mood but he still raced across town to see Pam's art (the rest of the office couldn't even be bothered to turn up except Roy who just did to impress Pam)
I had a boss that was like Michael: extremely awkward, annoying, but at the same time, his heart was in the right place... and he genuinely cared about his employees.
You need to either have a drink with your boss, or tell him how much of a good person he is (just tell him he’s like Michael Scott and remind him that it’s a compliment). If nice people like that aren’t appreciated, then we don’t deserve them.
Actually a good manager fires bad people asap. This is just a fake and fictional show. In the real world you get malignant and hostile people you need to remove
One of the best moments that showed Michael as a wonderful, big-hearted human being. When everyone else let her down, he was determined to be there. But yet, in true Michael-ness, he was completely unaware of what it all meant to Pam.
Because he’s a man child but a man child with a good heart and intentions. He’s like that annoying brother that REFUSES to stop bugging you and goes out of his ways to annoy you even in t most inappropriate ways. But he’s also that brother that IS a brother and will never let you know when you need help a goes out of his ways to help you
Isnt part of all of this that Michael had such a tacky taste? This is why he likes it and noone else does, which stirs contradictory emotions in Pam. She both feels "ah, someone likes it" and "oh no.... he likes it." It's funn because its bad and awkward
This scene always makes me cry. Michael tries too hard and can be an idiot, but he also cares so much. And he doesn’t just go to the art show to be nice or so that Pam won’t feel left out, he really is interested and likes her artwork. My heart.
That was always the key to his character. Everything he did was from the heart; he always meant well even if he was a buffoon or insensitive or tone-deaf. This is also how he differed from David Brent of the UK Office, and even the Michael Scott character of the first season, which was much closer to David Brent. The writers heavily retooled the character after the first season because Michael just wasn't likeable enough to carry the series, and they couldn't build a multi-season comedy around a main character that nobody could empathize with.
@Jordan Behm It was such a fun, little fake-out. You think he's pulling a Michael Scott and ruining the moment, but the fact that he did just have something in his pocket somehow makes the moment even more wholesome.
Yes, he had a chunky bar in THAT pocket. We may never know what the other pocket had. I always carry a Chunky bar in one front pocket so I'll always have an out if an awkward situation like this occurs.
I love that Jenna Fischer said it wasn’t hard to prepare for this scene because just having Steve Carell look at her and tell her he’s proud of her brought her to tears.
@@whitewalker608 me too!!! Lol! Its why I love reading the comments even years later!!! I swear I learn a new bit of Office trivia every time I watch a video.
AND the fact the whole show is like that gives that rawness in many ways to both the actors themselves and the genuine roles they play on set in character
I've not seen the show but now I kind of want to, I hate music like that because it feels manipulative - like a scene is not strong enough to affect you on it's own. This one was.
One thing that makes me tear up is the fact that Michael genuinely loves her work. He may be a goofball, but he is so enormously proud of all his employees that they couldn’t possibly do anything wrong in his eyes. Except Toby, of course.

The fact that Micheal decided to arrive much earlier than the other guys to hang up pam’s picture just shows how much he actually cares about his co-workers for as annoying as he is, kinda reminds me of a golden retriever that goofs around a lot but is there for you when you need it.
true but people forget oscar and roy did come ..even if one did not care and only came for his own desire to win her back and the other insulted her lifestyle...we get it but it would of meant more if mike was the only one to come from the office...oscar coming ruined that and roy to an extent but less so since he was in the warehouse
@@razkablethe user is talking abt Michael arriving earlier than everyone to work to hang her painting up. It could be because he’s the boss so he has to be the first one to be at work but this reason is also wholesome
Gatorgamez101 well even his hatred of Toby has limits........ he backed out last minute after trying to get him fired by planting weed on him... and he and Toby have had some decent moments.... so in his own way he still cares for Toby somewhat
Yet she always treats him pretty distant and even often jokes how she is avoiding him - i get he can prob be much but she honestly never did anything with him so its not really as close as we always wanted is it? they had great moments and of course are friends but it would have been nice to see them actually joke with each other or smth like that
This is why Pam left with Michael when he went to make his own paper company. Pam saw how caring and supportive he can be. She wanted to do the same for him. They were friends, weird friends, but friends.
The best thing here is that he is REALLY looking at her work. Not just saying “oh these are nice” he is looking at the details and asking questions. He sees things that she has done that he knows he could not, and is honestly impressed by them. You can tell by her posture at first that she is just waiting for him to make a joke or say something mean, and slowly realize that he is not making fun of her, and really means what he is saying. When he tells her how proud he is of her it just overwhelms her. Such a great scene.
This is when the show figured out how to write Michael. He was so unlikeable at first imo, but this exemplifies the 'lovable idiot' trope they were trying to nail down. He has no idea whatsoever how much his gesture means to Pam, in fact, he's caught up in his own emotions at this point, but he's so genuine that his words carry weight even though he didn't intend them to
This is also just a great reminder to just be nice to people, you never know what they're going through and few kind words could brighten their day even if you never know it.
I 100% agree.. The show turned around for me was when Michael closed that deal with Tim Meadows at Chilis. Outta the blue he has a complete shock and awe moment.
He was written perfect from day 1 and here's how I saw it. You saw him as unlikable (fair).... in The Office world many people also saw him as unlikeable, but the best part of all that, the best part about Michael Scott... he didn't know it. He never set out with ill intent (minus Toby). He was oblivious to his words and actions and its a big reason why he was so great. The complete idiot. We even see some in this very scene.... its touching, a nice moment within the entire show and Pam needed it. But which painting did he focus on and purchase... the building he manages LOL.
Oscar and his boyfriend came to see Pam's work. Pam was hiding behind one of the walls, overhearing Oscar and his boyfriend run her artwork down saying it was on par to motel room art. It hurt Pam a lot, hence why she gets over emotional to Michael's genuine response of loving her work.
This makes me cry every time. He thinks he is just being like every normal person, just buying a painting. Little did he know he made Pam’s whole day. Like not even Jim could come! But Micheal did. And that my friends is great writing.
aileen’s corner another cool little tidbit is how the 2 cars that are in the picture are micheals and pams, because Pam stayed late to make the painting, and Michael stayed because he loves the place.
I'm fairly certain Michael knew what he was doing. It's why he's such a wonderful character. He plays the goofy, trying-too-hard, obnoxious boss while at work, but he's actually just a genuinely sweet and caring person.
This is a special moment for me because Michael has spent his whole evening after work helping Ryan and then after that went horribly for him he still makes it out to see Pam’s art show. Everyone else who visited Pam earlier that evening wasn’t very supportive and Pam’s confidence as an artist was clearly knocked down up until this point. Michael is very supportive of Pam and their friendship is one of my favorites on the show.
Ryan has never even made a sale. And he started a FIRE trying to make a Cheesy-Pita. And, everybody thinks he's a tease He doesn't know anything, and neither do you! So, Suck On That!!!
When he points at details like the cars, that hits differently for artists. Sometimes we focus a lot of time on details that usually no one really cares to bother
When I do an illustration for a client I'll make some changes or corrections. I usually don't tell the client. Those changes are usually for me and to make me satisfied with the work. I'm sure nobody will ever notice but sometimes that client will see it...I don't know how...and they'll say "I'm glad you did that. Makes the whole thing work." And I'm just amazed...the rest of my day is made.
@@Farbar1955 Ohhh I love to do that! I always add extra little things in, especially when it's for someone that's grieving. Within 3 years, we had 4 cats dying in our neighbourhood (all because of kidneyproblems and one got run over.) 3 people appreciated a painting (for free.) I made sure that each and every painting was special for the owner. The first owner was a massive fan of Ajax football, so I drew his cat, walking a golden stairs, up to the orange-pink clouds in sunset, where the Greek God Ajax was welcoming him with his hand stretched out towards him, as if to say; "You're one of us now, you can live with the gods, here." The second cat wasn't painted, I did print out some photographs I had of her. The third one, was painted in the space-universe, playing with stars and planets, as if they were knitting-balls of yarn. And the fourth one was a Japanese cat, with the name Yuki Mura. The owner was a very organised man and he loved Japanese culture. Now, if you look up the name Yuki Mura in kanji, youll see that it's similar to a cat-face, on the left. So I painted her fur-pattern, with the kanji on top of that and added two little ears to the 'Yuki"-cat shape. A very abstract painting, he very much appreciated it. :) I'll put the Yuki up here btw, I hope it works. It's one of the spellings you can use, there's several: 雪
It’s crazy how Roy was encouraging and told Pam that her art was the “prettiest”. But when micheal came and actually put in effort to admire her art she got emotional. Really developed her character
Roy said one thing, but his actions said another. He couldn't even be bothered to hang around for the entirety of her show as a show of support. Because of that, his words came across as insincere
"Your art was the prettiest art of all the art" it was so clear that he couldn't care less about her art and was just saying that to be nice so that they could get back together. You could tell from her reaction that she knew that. But you can see from this clip how much it meant to her for Michael to genuinely see something in her, without trying to get anything in exchange
This scene and the scene when Michael hands out candy to the kids on halloween are two of my favorites. in both of those scenes, Michael had had a bad day, but chose to be happy and sweet to other people. tells you the type of person Michael Scott is. A caring and loving friend.
@Hinemoa mike found his way to get past the bad feelings..like when he tells jim i only say stuff like that to end tension when things get hard..thats what she said...brilliant
@@camdensparks524 The only difference I see here is that Erin admitted she respected Michael as a father and Pam just did it.... She just didn't know or wanted to realise that

I think Michael’s dynamic change with the rest of the characters was a great part of the show; Pam’s specifically. He started out kind of “romanticizing” her, but by the end he became more of a father figure to her. I think the characters in this show go from being immature to actually understanding one another, it’s very sweet.
Aww, I just realized he went in early to the office to put it up the next morning, because he wanted it on the wall ASAP. You can tell because no one is there, yet. He loved it that much.
Honestly, I broke down crying during this scene. It is the moment when Michael's development as a character completes itself. It is in this scene that we realize how Michael genuinely loves everybody in his office, and is never afraid to show it, whereas all the others, who claim to be better than Michael, actually are afraid to show their emotions to the detriment of their happiness. Sure, Michael is very awkward and childish, but all this comes from the desire to be accepted and from a tough childhood. And, as Ricky Gervais put it, there is a piece of Michael Scott in each of us. We all, sometimes, are silly in the attempt to be liked by others.
There was one time Michael was going to prank Toby, the police got called and when Toby was in serious danger of getting nailed for drug possession when it was not drugs, Michael stepped in and saved him.... begrudgingly. And very unapologetic afterwards. There was, somewhere in there, a shred of human compassion in Michael for Toby.
"You did these freehand?" "These could be tracings!" Such good writing. They could've gone too far with Michael's noble act. Could've made him sound like an angel or a sage. But he's still a big doofus. A doofus with a big, big heart.
I'm a grown man. This scene makes me wanna cry so bad. Because you can see that She's been crying. She felt alone and had no one to support her. And Michael's sincerity and validation meant so much. He didn't have to go. He didn't have to buy it. He wanted to go and he wanted to buy it. And that "I'm proud of you" means so much. It resonates too much
isn’t it crazy how you can change someone’s life so easily without even knowing it, she was ready to give up and go home, could you imagine what would have happened if michael didn’t show up, she could have stopped drawing or stopped being confident in her drawings, it might seem like such a little thing but in reality it’s not, deep down knowing that no one cares about you or what you accomplished it could break you, such a little thing could change your whole view on life
Regarding a poorly attended gallery show leading to an artist quitting... pretty much only in fiction. For most artists, particularly freehand drawers, rendering in paint, pencil, charcoal, etc. is just a way one manages life, more language than performance. But pop culture's rendering of visual artists has no patience for that reality. Instead every artist is depicted either excessively ego fragile (Pam) or a sociopath who obsesses over others' failure to recognize their genius.
To be fair, she went on to fail out of art school possibly with student debt. Would have been better for her to have a realistic idea of her (non)abilities sooner.
Honestly I hated everyone for not showing. Michael is such a treasure for coming to her show. Edit: except Oscar, Oscar came. But I’m mad that he and his partner were so mean.
@@cat-mh2wp Yeah, but either he or his boyfriend then dissed the art piece, and Pam overheard it. So even though he came, he wasn't really there. Contrast this with Michael - not only did he come because he *wanted* to, rather than just doing it because he was asked, he also genuinely appreciated the art.
This is truly meaningful because Micheal just realised through ryan's presentation that the company he dedicated his entire life to is going through an existential crisis, that paper was starting to become obsolete, and when he saw Pam's painting, he realised that there was still hope for paper afterall, that was why he wanted to buy the painting from Pam, to remind himself of the meaning of his work. Pam on the other hand was touched by his appreciation of her art, which she felt was going nowhere. Both parties got the validation they needed from the interaction.
It wasn’t just Michael who saved Pam from an emotionally devastating night, but it was also Pam’s painting that saved Michael after he had an emotionally devastating day with Ryan who had earlier made a Michael feel that selling paper was a deadend job……
Nobody is talking about the context of this scene and how everyone passing by disregarded her work and made fun of her. Oscar and his boyfriend came to see her work only to ridicule it while they thought she wasn’t present to hear them. Michael was the only one who came and the only one who complimented her art.
@@maxwellsope1080 Yeah during the finale. Honestly it was a little out of place for his character. I think they wanted to give all of them a meaningful quote though.

Josh Wiseman it’s a very strong representation of who Michael is. He always sees the positive in things even if he lacks self awareness at times. So the fact that he got humiliated at Ryan’s class didn’t stop him from being Michael at Pams art show. It’s actually a really deep scene in context for both characters.
Josh Wiseman ....because alot of people who met setbacks in their personal life don’t often feel to go out of their way to be there for other people? The fact that Michael does it, speaks alot about his character and his relationship with Pam?
for me it was the sweetest and warmest scene. Michael was the only one to show up at Pam's show, he even apologized for being late and his true appreciation of Pam's work was super sweet and Moving
"Yeah, we have to have it....for the office." He's not there for himself. He's there for Pam. He's not buying the art for himself. He's buying it for the office. No workplace deserves a boss like this.
Expressive actors always go under rated. Like that was the bedy part of Hayden Christensen and anakin. As wooden as his dialogue was. Whenever he had to physically express himself he was amazing
Amazing acting by Jenna Fischer, she transports her feelings and emotions so well you can't help it but also shed a tear for this very sweet gesture made by Michael Scott since you can clearly see how much it meant to Pam.
Agree. Jenna is an amazing actress. I noticed earlier on during first two seasons, her reaction, facial expression, voice tone, everything was perfect.
steve carell talked about this in the beginning of jenna's fantastic book. he said it is one of her best performances and i agree with him wholeheartedly. i hope to see her in more projects in the future..i hope she won't wind up doing only the office ladies podcast and disappear from the screen. she's so talented.
I’ve watched this scene a few times and never noticed that. When you see who jenna naturally is you realize she did a great job perfecting Pam. She’s so subtle in this scene and that’s what’s captivating! I always got distracted by Michael haha. But Pam is so vulnerable and shy in this 💔💔💔
Literally crying when he said “I’m proud of you”... I’m an artist, not a very good one and I don’t do anything that can be admired by anyone but me, so this scene just hits real hard
I also loves Michael's perspective in this scene. He just found out Ryan thinks Dunder Mifflin is an obsolete and failing business. Through Pam, Michael sees someone who cares enough about the company to make art of it, and realizes that her art means their paper still has importance even in a paperless world. Everyone talks about Michael encouraging Pam in this scene, but I also love how she encouraged him.
"This is our building, and we sell paper." That is why this sentence means so much, when to anybody else it might be a nothing statement. Well said, Matt.
Even came in the morning earlier than the rest to hang it in the office. Michael Scott had the intellect, integrity and basically the soul of a dog; in the best way possible.
One of the best Characterizations of Micheal Scott I've ever Read. I always thought he was a Narcissist, but may just maybe he just wants/needs to be Loved. I bet Michael had abandonment trauma as a young boy.
@@liasunshine7470 remember the episode where he finds the recording of when he went on the kid's show? "When I grow up I want to have 100 kids that way I'll have friends and no one can say no to being my friend" Dude definitely had a rough childhood
The most wholesome scene in the whole show for me. The moment he said "I'm really proud of you" got tears in my eyes. I don't think he even understood how much that meant to Pam at that moment.
What stood out to me in this episode is when Michael asks, “How much?” Not many people acknowledged her art, or when they did- they gave it crappy reviews. But at the end, her art was the only one in the studio that made a sale (even though it was not on sale and Michael insisted to buy the painting).
The way she acts so incredulous that someone would actually pay for her artwork at 0:51 is so heartbreaking, she is at her lowest moment. Michael saves her dream here. Their relationship was solid as a rock after this. It even survived Michael moving in for a kiss at Diwali 😂
@@AB-nk5wv And how she looked at him when he pointed out they sell paper. Like, she realized he was looking so far beyond just a sheet of paper with some water color on it (basically how everyone had been judging it), instead experiencing the piece through a sheet of paper with some watercolor on it and made a deeper meta connection....ie, the perception of art and the viewers experience of it. Which so many times is dictated to the viewer instead of just letting them experience it themselves, like art is supposed to do (there is the artists intent, and the viewers perception. Neither can dictate to the other what is more superior, regardless of how often that simple concept tends to be bastardized).
I think it's also important to notice he asked to buy it instead of asking Pam to just bring it to the office, I mean he is her manager he could have just told her to bring the painting, but instead he gave her credit for it and wanted to treat it as it should
This was such a good scene. Michael was really nice in this scene, because he wasn’t trying to be anything, he was just himself for a minute there. Another scene like this was when Jim went to Michael’s party and stayed when they were the only two there
I believe that indirectly reflects what was going on for them at the time. Pam was newly seperated and Jim was dating Karen so Pam was probably staying late at the office ecause she had no reason to rush home. Michael equally was going through his own shit with Jan and whatnot, so there were probably days where it was just them two after work.
I never realized the true depth of his compliment. He was proud of selling paper because paper allowed Pam to create art. It helped him remember his purpose too. What a powerful moment.
I always interpreted that comment more as Michael being astonished that someone drew a picture so beautiful for a place that does such a mundane job, but you might be right.
This was a beautiful scene. Michael had a rough day at Ryan's college and still came to see Pam's art. He could have easily went home and forgotten about the day all together, but he didn't. After feeling insulted by Ryan, he took the time to come down and compliment Pam's art after her rough day. Very beautiful.
@@LeonardoGPN It just goes to show that Michael was the glue that kept The Office together. When Kelly tampered with Jim and Dwight's reports out of spite for not attending her party in the Customer Survey episode, Michael assured her everything was going to be alright and pretended to be disappointed in her just for show. Michael could have fired Dwight for the fire drill in the office, and he could have made Ryan pack his belongings after the incident at his college, but he didn't. Michael was the one that got Dwight to come back to work at Dunder Mifflin when he was at Staples. When you think about it, Michael had special moments in the show keeping his office family together.
Side note. There's a deleted scene where Michael asks everyone if they ever imagined having a different boss and everyone says yes. He goes on to say maybe a different boss wouldn't allow two of his employees, (Jim and Pam), to have a relationship and send one to a different branch. It's another amazing scene revealing just how awesome of a boss Michael really was.
This really solidified Pam and Michaels relationship as friends. Pam realized that she wasn’t just an object to him and that he actually cared about her as a true friend.
0:51 when Pam thinks someone actually paying for her at work is ludicrous, she’s at her lowest point. Michael and Pam’s relationship was for life after this point.
@sourav joy cuz michael always made insensitive jokes towards his employees, especially pam, which were sometimes sexual. he made jokes that you would really only say to a close/best friend; he thought his employees liked him as a best friend but in reality they only saw him as their boss. that changed later on when his employees ended up seeing how he's a good soul.
Yeah, I loved that growing bond! 😊 Shortly after this episode is the one at the mall, where she helped to convince him to break up with Jan (although that backfired cuz the reasons weren’t “big” enough 😆). The one that really touches my heart is when she encouraged him to be patient with Holly, as she knew how deeply in love he was with her (and that they are right for each other). Even little things like when she fixed “Robot Michael’s” battery pack is another great example of her understanding how to appease his silly childish side. It started out with her constantly being annoyed with him, to her gradually understanding that there is a lot more to Michael than what most experience on the surface. Thats the love that comes from seeing someone as family, even if there is no blood relation (which ironically is what Michael saw his co-workers as from the start).
I’ve seen people complimenting the writing for this show but nobody complimenting the acting. Such a heartwarming scene pulled off so well by such incredible people.
For as awkward as Mike was and as much as I hated it, he was quite the character and actor. Imagine keeping a straight face while saying all those dumb ass lines. Edit: Oh and i'm not talking about the scene here in the video above.
"Unless you had a camera" What I love about this show is that during incredible, emotional moments like these, there's always that one punchline that makes you start laughing through tears. One of the best shows ever created.
Raccoon sir, this is a thing from season 5 episode 23 , he has that written down on the white board. And yea it may be wrong but Michael was pretty clueless when it came to most things🙂
Bear in mind with the pretext of this episode. Michael was grilled at Ryan's class for being a boss at a failing company. Michael ultimately says its not efficiency that makes a business but the people that work at it. The humanity of it. Michael in turn is the only person to tell Pam she's enough. She's valued without getting anything in return. Michael shows that sometimes the best thing for humanity is to be a human being.
Yeah i mean, i was kinda pissed by that line cuz the scene had already became very emotional. In my head i was thinking "NO DON'T GET A B*NER ! PLEASE DONT RUIN THE SCENE!!!" 🤣
The scene perfectly describes Michael; an awkward, weird and genuine man

You forgot sweet. The thing that made the whole show work, the glue, was Steve Carell. The fact that he wanted to be liked and loved more than a boss was what made him endearing. You have funny shows like Seinfeld but they dont have a loyal following like the office because the central character was funny but not endearing.
Well said, my friend
That's the problem with the U.S. version of The Office. It's too schmaltzy. The original BBC The Office was raw and often times uncomfortable because it hit close to home for a lot of people. The humor was sometimes very subtle.
@@dan_hitchman007 that's why it suck..they made it too realistic..as a former office worker the uk version was too hard to watch because after hours of sitting in the office it would be too depressing to watch that show.

Subtle detail: Michael takes down his award on the wall to hang up Pam’s picture :)
When he takes the award down, there's actually a rectangle of wall grime around its spot. Either the award had been up for all 3.5 seasons and had built up the dirt, or the set design people REALLY take it seriously (or both).

The second cat wasn't painted, I did print out some photographs I had of her.
I'll put the Yuki up here btw, I hope it works. It's one of the spellings you can use, there's several:

It’s crazy how Roy was encouraging and told Pam that her art was the “prettiest”. But when micheal came and actually put in effort to admire her art she got emotional. Really developed her character
Roy said one thing, but his actions said another. He couldn't even be bothered to hang around for the entirety of her show as a show of support. Because of that, his words came across as insincere
Your art is the prettiest art of all the art
roy was being patronizing
Roy was trying to smash tho, I don't think he was really appreciative like Jim and MIchael

He removed his own prize of the wall to put Pam's painting.

2:04 the clock says it's 8:55, so i guess thats correct!
He didn’t love Toby. Lol
This is one of my favorite scenes of the whole series.

It resonates too much
isn’t it crazy how you can change someone’s life so easily without even knowing it, she was ready to give up and go home, could you imagine what would have happened if michael didn’t show up, she could have stopped drawing or stopped being confident in her drawings, it might seem like such a little thing but in reality it’s not, deep down knowing that no one cares about you or what you accomplished it could break you, such a little thing could change your whole view on life
Yeah maybe her marriage wouldn't have went to shit if she stopped deluding herself.
THAT'S WHY LIFE IS SO ABSURD. THIS SHOW WAS PERFECT BECAUSE IT WAS AMAZING AT CAPTURING ALL OF THAT.

Eric Dandurant that’s why she asked him if he had something in his pocket! 😉
Notice that no one gives a shit?
When I originally watched this I thought for sure they were gonna hook up and fuck
Probably because Michael's car is really iconic and her car... is her car, so she could remember well those two cars

This made me think he didn't want Ryan admiration because he is a show off, he wanted Ryan admiration because he liked him.

@@AB-nk5wv Pam was really insecure! Glad she became more confident afterwards.
This is why, in future episodes, you'd really see how Pam developed a soft spot for Michael. Subtly looking after the grown man-child that he is.
It’s Michael looking after Pam.
I didn’t even think about that. You really can see it though. I’m a couple episodes after that scene and it’s definitely noticeable.
