We're in Perth, WA as well and we have a rainbow lorikeet. Hand reered from a baby, they certainly are relentless, thats for sure! Very loving animals, and yes, highly intelligent!
This cracks me up over & over. I have one too but she does little tunes, mumbles hello, & says 'ruff' like a dog, but she's less than 1 yr old so maybe it just takes longer. I heard girls are harder to train to talk. I can roll her on her back & play with her feet. Love seeing the different characters! Urs is clearly very happy.. human contact, toys, nice cage.. they're very happy if you treat them right. Mine's been carefully watching your video from my shoulder & trying to communicate =D
i LOVE tootsie! she's adorable, and I agree, when they're hand reared, they love being with people. I had a hand reared red collar rainbow. Bought her at 13 weeks, she knew some sounds and whistles, and at about 6 months she was saying clear words. i think they start out like babies, saying sounds and then simple words like our names, at about 9 months and she was saying full sentences 5 words long. They're the best pet ever but demand alot of attention & cleaning.
@YourCoffinOrMine08 I'm definately inspired by yours and will try extra hard now! They're such little clowns, well worth the mess and noise! I love how yours does that springy bop on the spot, and swings her head around from one side to the other when she talks, so cheeky and clever, she's just adorable!
I second that comment! There are many flocks of rainbow lorikeets in my neighbourhood, and wow they are loud! It's crazy how much noise they can make. From personal experience, they're worse in the summer for some reason. Once I was outside on a summer day when they were doing their loud chattering at dusk, and I could feel my eardrums vibrating constantly. Magnificent birds though.
I love Tootsie! I'm trying to teach my rainbow Lory to say "I'm a good girl" just like her!! :) Ours says "Go outside" and "go potty?" when the dog comes in the room! She also says "Come on" and "lie down" to the dog, as well as saying "hello" and "peeka boo!" and "uh oh!" I love these birds, and though they poop a lot and are loud, they are super affectionate, loyal, and great pets... these birds make me happy!
She definitely seems happy to me!! I know from experience, they're not always happier in the wild.. I raised & released one that had been injured in the wild. She returned home 6 weeks later & wouldn't leave again!! She thinks she's got it better with me!!
Yup, in the wild they feed on nectar and pollen, occasionally chewing on fruit and seeds. As a result, they don't crap, rather they 'squirt' their waste, numerous times each day, and they don't care where it lands. If you are willing to feed and clean up after a Lorikeet, and are lucky enough to find one who matches your personality, then you will find heaven. If your personalities don't match, you are up for about 30 years of painfull hell. That is how long these beautiful birds can live.
@YourCoffinOrMine08 my lori was born in captivity. She has never flown and could not possibly fend for herself in the wild. Loris are such characters and ours is very much loved member of our family.
Watching this absolutely breaks my heart that most pet birds in Indonesia are sold in tiny cages as over-stressed adults always looking to escape their cages, or is chained up to a post for the rest of their lives. This 'keet is practically living the best life in comparison.
I just had a 1 y.o. Lorikeet on the veranda rail then (in Sydney), I stuck my head out the door near the rail and he came up to have a look when I started whispering. My friend claims the Lorikeets taught him their language when he was a baby, Hehehehe
I just bought one today,it's a weber's lorikeet, and they actually exaggerate a lot the projectile poop thing. They talk about it like if the bird was some sort of crap machine gun lol..actually from my early experiences, he is quite hygienic in a way, he goes to his perch's corner in the cage and poops in that little corner of the cage, but the problem comes when they drink water. After they drink water they do spurt a bit their poop but it is relatively small(size of pinkie's nail)& dont smell
personally, as an australian citizen, where lorikeets are plentyful, i hate to see them in cages, and this one acts a lot different from ones in the wild.
I also have a caged bird - a cockatiel - but it's sad for them to live their lives in cages. I have hundreds of wild rainbow lorikeets that visit my yard, and in the wild they fly miles and are very social creatures.
@toastymellows I don't know much about Lorikeets, but usually smaller parrots and birds don't have the ability to mimmick words at all, because their vocal cords aren't developed enough/ voices are too high pitched. I have a Sun Conure, which get around the size of those and it's rare that they will actually talk. Might be able to make out some words, but if they try it's normally very unclear. It can happen, but like I said it's rare.
@YourCoffinOrMine08 I know that all birds have the capability too, but in smaller parrots (at least most conure's) and other small birds that it's usually is pretty rare. But it is possible with enough repetition. And of course it depends on the bird's desire to learn. :) Like I said I don't know much about Lori's. But I know that it is VERY unlikely my Sun Conure, Tiko, will learn to say anything clearly. He's good at mimicking sounds though :)
@Jarmint I see what you mean. I'm sympathetic as well. Lorikeets are pretty awesome and I'm dang near convinced eclectus parrots are as closely related as some believe (I have a male). However, what you're supposed to do is shoot 1 and hang it around the place you wish them not to be. At least that's how it works for hawks or whatever. 1 down to save some crops, fine; it's probably poisoned anyway.
Judging by the colours, Tootsie looks like a male lorikeet... perhaps it's just the camera, but out of my five dozen lorikeets, the females all have predominant yellow down each side, merging into yellowish orange in the middle, whereas the males will be mostly deep orange on the chest, with a couple of yellow spots on each "collar"... anyway, hope that Tootsie is doing well!
Beautifullllll!! Are these great pets, though, in the home w/children? Do these make a lot of annoying noises and bite... or are they affectionate? Please, someone here help. I am soooo set on buying my special bird very soon. Thank you all!!
OMG Tootsie is so cute. I need to know something from you are lorikeets expensive birds? I am planning to buy one but I really do not know the prices. And also are they loud?
How old can they start mimicking/talking? I have a rainbow lorikeet and it's almost one year old. But it can only mimick my whistling, not talking. Please reply back, thank you ^0^!
I used to have one when I was living in Perth but when I had to move back to Europe I wasn't able to take him back with me. Rainbow lorikeets are considered a pest in Western Australia (and can be shot by farmers) and yet they are not allowed to be taken out of the country... What a stupid law...
I'm considering buying one of these guys tomorrow. I am however a bit concerned about the projectile poop that I've heard about. Is it really that bad? I have about a 4-5 inch piece around the bottom of my cage, would that help contain it? Are they good with kids? It's just a huge commitment and I'm aftraid that the lady selling it will tell me whatever I want to hear in order to make the sale. I guess they don't make lory diapers, lol.
I love how she looks around when you say 'what's that'! She speaks incredibly well for a female. Does your girl lash out and bite whenever she gets excited?
With lorikeets, you can tell the gender by the colour of their feathers. A male lorikeet will have AMAZINGLY BRIGHT colours, whereas a female would look like it was dipped into a bucket of bleach. This is because in the wild, the males attract the females with their amazing colours.
LOL, SOOOO adorable and CUTE. Enjoyed every bit of the video. Tootsie is a star!

OMG I HAVE WATCHED THIS VIDEO LIKE A THOUSAND TIMES WITH MY LORIKEET AND SHE COPIES TOOTSIE !! I LOVE YOUR BIRD SO MUCH !! SHES AMAZING :)
My lorikeet talk like a chater box!
When I go to work he said " bye, I love you!" He knews nearly 100 words
Wonderful! I used to work with lorikeets, I have so many good memories! What a sweet bird
Tootsie is "SO" much like my lorikeet i was starting to think you "Birdnapped" mine....hahaha. Mine even says "what's that"
Lorikeets are funny little things, lot's of fun but need a lot of care

That was awesome! She's so smart and beautiful!
I hate to hear they kill them there. sad
this is so freaken cute !
Oh wow, I never knew that rainbow lories could speak so well.... :)
@YourCoffinOrMine08 my lori was born in captivity. She has never flown and could not possibly fend for herself in the wild. Loris are such characters and ours is very much loved member of our family.
Awww baby , you r such a beautiful lory

Agree, Avocado will kill any bird.

LOL While Lori/Lorikeets can be noisy, it's NOTHING compared to a Macaw's squawk or a Moluccan Cockatoo's scream.

wow where do you get a bird like this?...captive raised of course
Judging by the colours, Tootsie looks like a male lorikeet... perhaps it's just the camera, but out of my five dozen lorikeets, the females all have predominant yellow down each side, merging into yellowish orange in the middle, whereas the males will be mostly deep orange on the chest, with a couple of yellow spots on each "collar"... anyway, hope that Tootsie is doing well!
wow seems it has vocabulary like african gray
You can't tell by looking at them. If you want to find out the sex, see a vet about DNA sexing, or wait and see if the bird lays an egg.
Beautifullllll!! Are these great pets, though, in the home w/children? Do these make a lot of annoying noises and bite... or are they affectionate? Please, someone here help. I am soooo set on buying my special bird very soon. Thank you all!!
Not sure about the high maintenance part but their waste is errrrr ummmm, quite messy due to their diet. Let's just say it is not very solid. LOL
OMG Tootsie is so cute. I need to know something from you are lorikeets expensive birds? I am planning to buy one but I really do not know the prices. And also are they loud?
I 3x.
@YourCoffinOrMine08 I reckon your username cracks me up just as much as the Lorikeet LOL thanks
watch my bird talk guys ;)
i thought those were like impossible to have cause they eat flower nectar. what do you feed it?
How old can they start mimicking/talking? I have a rainbow lorikeet and it's almost one year old. But it can only mimick my whistling, not talking. Please reply back, thank you ^0^!
um...what?

You could not be more wrong about colour, the only way to sex them is DNA, surgical sexing stopped years ago
U know if it's a boy or girl because the girl lays eggs when it's older and the boy starts getting sexual to u
