There were clear and defining roles of what a man should do and what a woman should do. Maybe red is just extra hard on Eric because he just doesn’t want life to push him around. In my family my grandpa was exceptionally hard on my dad and his siblings but it was only because he cared, and the Vietnam war wasn’t making things any easier. To me it just shows the mentality of what a man and woman’s roles were based on the time it took place ie the 70s

In the earlier episode of the season, she was sleeping with a college professor for better grades, so it's not surprising that she was sleeping with a MARRIED guy for rent. At the end of the episode, Laurie even said that he moved back in with his wife. Yeah, very responsible....
The reasoning isn't the issue. It's the fact that he was under the impression that his daughter was (for lack of a better term) "pure" and a "good girl". His daughter put up a "facade" of purity, and Red bought into it his entire life, only for it to hit him like the '85 Chicago Bears defensive line that she wasn't. He was essentially made a fool out of his family and his daughter was the main reason for it all. Doesn't justify it at all, but it is a little understandable as to why he would talk to his daughter like that in this moment. However, he does come to his senses eventually
I love how Eric was making fun of Laurie but the moment he saw how upset she was at Reds response, he defended her, they may not get along but they do love one another
