- A song especially for pirate lovers everywhere. Wickedly haunting but mindblowingly catchy, this olde English Pirate tale is funny yet bitter sweet. Telling the story of shipwrecks, ghost ships, pirate galleons, fierce buccaneer battles & lots & lots of sinkings. Cornwalls' Pirateers, bringing the fun back into music, produced their newest sea shanty song telling the story of one of their very own. Obviously it's a true story.... as a young sailor lad puts to sea only to be caught up in disaster after disaster. But he does good and survives all that Neptune, God, Davy Jones and the Kings Royal Navy has to throw at him in this battle for survival on the seven seas before turning to Pirateering.
Written by the very clever and prolific Freeman and Morris song writing team, the Pirateers are flying. Rocking Cornwall back to its roots.

Ok, so strictly speaking this isn't a sea shanty, but for f..ks sake just enjoy it for what it is, bloody good song about the sea. I was privileged to sing for nearly ten years with the Sheringam Shantymen and half of our songs weren't exactly shanties, but that didn't seem to bother the audiences we performed to. Keep up the good work boys

This is an awesome song! Was running through the TV channels and came across the end scene of the show "Blunt talk" and heard it! HAD to find it! I play in an irish band here in the states and we have to add this one in!

Wow. I only mentioned the fact I pay in an Irish band, not that the song is Irish. Of course the English were seafarers of the highest order, and we do a set of songs, both English and Irish, dedicated to that. Certainly this would fit in. No problem.

You know, all you would really need to sing this at sea is a guitar with a good player and a ship with a strong, hardy crew.
Why a guitar?
The concertina was played a lot by sailors on those wooden ships. I imagine a guitar was liable to warp in the ocean spray.

Terrific sea song and engaging video, but alas it's not actually a sea shanty. It's not in the maritime work song format. That said, it's sung by a great group of musicians that, I think, hold their own against established groups like Great Big Sea.

Heres a thing, you can tencichally still sail the seas. Have you ever heard of tall ship cruises, you man a sailing ship and it's the closest were ever gonna get to being sailors.

To answer your question, "no". This isn't even a sea shantie. A sea shantie has a very specific definition, and I can't picture hauling on a brace to the rhythm of this song. This is a modern sea song, written with a bunch of modern cliches about the sorts of things that sailors used to do back in the good old days (kind of the lyrical equivalent of a buccaneer with a peg-leg standing on the decks of a pirate ship with a huge Jolly Roger-printed sails hanging so full of shot holes they'd be utter worthless as sails, even if they hadn't split wide open from the weakening of the fabric long before they got to that point). A real sea shanty is something like "Randy Dandy Oh", but actually sung a lot slower than you usually hear it done today (a capstan shanty is not a rousing, fast song, it's a beat-making song, and capstan turning is a slow and steady job).
You are right on all fronts, it's rather embarrassing how you can just throw very closely defined words around out of context to baffle those without knowledge on the subject and get showered with praise for it.
This is more akin to a song sung by some cheaply costumed part time actors in Disneyland, rather than an actual work song.
EDIT: Just looked at their channel, looked at their banner art, almost choked from laughter. That's exactly what they are: Disney-style showmen playing "mean pirrrrrates arrrrr!" which is fine, but don't claim to be the best in anything but "acting a role" (which is fine) and "misrepresenting history" (which is not fine).

Or Roll the Old Chariot Along. These are real working sea shanty songs. Nobody had time to play a fiddle or blow a flute when there's lines to be hauled!
I feel like like a lot of really traditional shanties have a call-and-response element. Everyone's participating and making music with just their voices.
Really? There seemed to to be a very consistent beat, and I have actually used to as a true sea shanty. (I am the captain of a deal sea fishing vessel.)

Shanties are songs sung by crew members. Some songs require a lone sailor to sing a verse or (as far as I know) in some songs have some conversation or story telling.
