Title suggestion "The Sailors Way". As a former sailor, I can tell you the ocean is a cruel mistress. Sailors both love and fear her and I think your song does a fair job capturing some of that.
I second this suggestion. I am not a sailor, with no intention to be, but both my parents are and my brother aspires to be one so I definitely agree that this song just gets what the sea is, especially to sailors.
You should call the shanty "Marusía." It's a Galician word meaning a rough sea but also the smell of that ocean. Galicia in NW Spain is known for its rough seas and seasoned sailors. That's the word that came to mind when I saw the initial video. I absolutely loved it.
Ahoy mateys, just wanted to share a demo of a sea shanty I wrote recently. This was inspired by some footage of the ocean I saw floating around on TikTok which evoked the mysteries of the briny deep, and I couldn't resist adding to the already long and lush list of sea shanties out there. Incidentally, I started writing this song a few days before the passing of Gordon Lightfoot (a songwriting master famous for his own shipwreck song) so now seems like an extra good time to share this in honor of his memory. I hope you enjoy it! [And too bad about the phone, but that's what I get for being a doofus 🤪] Yo ho ho, that's all for now ye landlubbers. I'm off to get some grog! --Reina
You never really said that Gordon died , just in his memory . Of course , everyone should already know that , it was a sad day in music ! What a great singer / songwriter ! ! ! What a great song , to play in his memory ! ! ! Love it ! ! !
I love this as the name because she starts the first verse using it and brings it back full circle with that line in the last one. It also reflects the roar from the video that inspired the song
Do not call yourself an idiot. Do not denigrate yourself. Phones have a natural inclination to die. They are constantly on the lookout for ways to end their miserable existence.
Keel Down - which is the goal of sailors to keep the boat afloat, but also sounds like kneel down - what you do before an awesome power - and that is what a raging sea is
That is the first original shanty I've ever heard that truly drew me into the depths of the sea where I could feel the coldness Bind my bones. The waves in the background were perfect both for the audio and visually
I'm from a VERY long line of sailors & grew up with, "Red at night, Sailor's delight. Red in the morning, Sailor's warning." ...& variations on it, like sailors', and "sailors take warning", etc. ✨️What an amazing shanty this is, huh?!✨️
"Answer the Call" The video called you to write the song, your community called to you to finish it, and it speaks to the spirit of the song. Great song, btw!
This is absolutely amazing in all honesty. I would love to see it out on Spotify, Apple Music, and just like literally shown to the world because it’s that amazing and I would definitely sing to it and with it
A new sea shanty! Beautiful! A classic. Sailors will be singing it for the next hundred years. From someone who's been sailing the oceans for for 50 years: you've captured the spirit like an Old Salt! Purely authentic, all the way to invoking the storm tactics and required confidence of facing the sea's challenge. If you can, please post that as a standalone so I can play it on my sailboat as I voyage the Pacific.
I would find this disturbing. The sea does not answer to musicians and poets. The sea is not your friend, and when the sea reaches out to you, this does not bode well.
The red sun verse gave me chills! "Yes we see that red sun on the rise we have no fear of luckless skies our ship is fit our captain wise and we'll reach our harbor by and by" Especially the middle two lines Especially "we have no fear of luckless skies" like OooAhh shivers in delight
Me too! It reminded me of days when we were walking on the walls... the feel of the ship shuddering with each new wave took me a while to get used to. DD 987
I am seconding a name I found the comments: Hear the Roar. I love this as the name because she starts the first verse using it and brings it back full circle with that line in the last one. It also reflects the roar from the video that inspired the song.
As a former sailor, and having sailed upon the Bering Sea, I gotta say well done to both you and Toni. You captured the somber feeling and hopelessness/ helplessness against the forces of nature. We all resigned to our fates when getting underway...
I really love the accuracy of the lyrics. From the red sky in the morning to the heaving to when weather gets heavy. Only seasoned sailors ever hove to and survived.
Yo ho, I love your song! You and Toni are so talented. I loved how the roar of the sea added to the tension of the song. However, your phone falling into the water was priceless.
I am loving how you brought so much real tension into the story. The ominous waves building beyond the rocks, getting nearer. Great engagement with nature to tell its story! The musical elements really do add to the depths. You and Toni amaze.
We Canadians find the songs of the sea fun to sing. You mentioned Lightfoot’s Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And there’s lots by Stan Rogers. Can’t wait to stamp our feet to Barret’s Privateers and the Mary Ellen Carter. Or even the song that should be our national anthem, Northwest Passage. Thanks for adding another shanty that we can use when we raise a voice or a jar. :)
Yes, RdC should definitely plan to cover some songs from Stan Rogers, especially "Barrett's Privateers" and "Witch Of Westmoreland" (which Stan covered from his pal Archie Fisher, but made his own)! "Maryellen Carter" could be a great addition, too!
Maybe you can answer a question for me then. In the musical (Come From Away) about the passengers stranded in Gander, Newfoundland after 9/11, did they base the song that sounds like a sea shanty in the bar scene on an actual shanty and, if so, what is the title? I can't find any mention of it in the program notes I've seen but they also don't mention the religious songs sampled in another piece and I know they did it there because I recognized the song from my own religious tradition.
Such an excellent vibe to this song. I feel that the phrase "Souls of the Sunken" captures the feeling and meaning ... That's my suggestion for a title.
The best kind if writer is one who just comes up with something from seeing a video and then makes a video that is a super funny tribute to the oceanic depths of our planet’s liquids.

At some points it sounds like you timed the song to the breaking of the surf perfectly! Trying to figure out why you would be barefoot on that rocky beach. Of course, being from the Seattle area my first thought is concern you're gonna get all cut up from barnacles. Anyway, amazing song! It would fit in perfectly on Pandora or Spotify Miracle of Sound Radio. I could easily see it mixed in with stuff from The Longest Johns.
“Souls of the Sunken “ is my vote for title. My father was based out of Reykjavik Iceland on a destroyer in 1942 & 1943 then transferred to a battleship in the Pacific in 1944 & 1945. He sank 2 U-boats and shot down numerous kamikazes. When I asked him “weren’t you scared of the U-boats and the kamikazes?” He replied, “ Oh hell they were nothing compared to the damn storms!”
This song is amazing! As I listened to it, I could easily imagine 18th century sailors with flagons of ale singing this song in an Irish seaside pub and stomping their boot- clad feet on the hardwood floor in time to the music. Brilliantly done!
I love how you incorporated, "Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning" , without actually quoting it. I think a good name would be, "The Harbinger".

What a great song! So happy to have found your channel. There is something quite profound about what you and Toni are giving to the world and the folk tradition.
Loved it! Such excellent musicality, with the dynamics mirroring the swelling of the waves.(Spoken as someone who's spent a couple of years living/working on ships on the Bering Sea, I'd say you really captured it!) Loved the toms, the mandolin, the harmony and general building of energy towards the end--and the finishing "creeeeak" sound. Outstanding!
I have some suggestions 1. “Yo Ho, Heave and Blow” 2. “Shall Not Find our Graves” 3. “The Cruel Ocean” 4. “We Shall Not Sink Today” 5. “Roar of the Sea” 6. “On with the Journey”
“Heave and Blow” is a perfect title. I liked that you were inspired by Gordon Lightfoot. Other GL songs in this vein are “ Ghosts of Cape Horn” and “Sea of Tranquility”. I did laugh at the microphone drop. Probably more because you set it up so well!
I could imagine that being used as the soundtrack in a big budget movie. And I can imagine audiences saying, “Where can I get hold of that soundtrack?”
I cannot tell you how much I love this shanty. It is perfect! I have been a fan of you guys since Ive first heard your covers of others. "Lost to the sea" - double meaning of the phone's fate, but also the fate of the sailors.

Home at Last
A Home in the Sea

"iphone's lament"
