I guess I just do it my own way. I treat my surge like my firearms. Hose it down with high pressure blasts from a can of gun scrubber, let it dry, then take some q tips soaked in ballistol, work it into the moving parts, let that soak for half an hour or so, then use dry q tips to wipe out the excess. I've noticed that pretty much every Leatherman owner has a different method. But I've had really good results. Regardless, very good video 👍
@@herwantoherwanto9074 wd40 is not a cleaner it will dry up quick and leave your tool worse than it was, I never recommend wd40, I’d use what the fella above uses, treat your tools like guns.
@@johncoffeehays742 I have been using wd40 on my 08/98 wave that is going out of warranty this year 😔 since I got it. Just because I don't have access to those other cleaning products, and she is still great
It has been a bad idea. Although I put everything back in order my pocket knife hasn’t been the same . Things doesn’t click like before. Blade doesn’t align perfectly. It was perfect before although dirty but perfect. Servicing is a bad idea unless you are Leatherman engineer
The black is okay but it will get your hands dirty as it wears off with time. Also, my particular Surge never really “broke in” completely, and I think it’s the friction of this coating. I would go with Stainless steel and just maintain the tool with occasional oiling. For years I did not oil mine and that’s probably where my minor rusting came from
@@inkiron3907 I'm just worried that the screws in general might have been loosened from the impact...It's hard to explain and it's ever so subtle. This video is pretty evidential though isn't it? You can repair it yourself, which is just wicked.
A question: the torx screws that holds it together has a little peg in the middle, I guess it’s there to stop us amateurs to open up the tool. How did you get your manual ”torx screwdrivers” to slip in? When I try mine is efficiently stopped by the pegs.
I use “security torx” with a hole that corresponds to the pegs inside Leatherman’s hardware. I got them at my local hardware store. I hope that helps 🤷🏽♂️
I don't bother with disassembling anything, just running over with soapy water a Toothbrush gets all the crap out well enough for me. Stick it near the fireplace to dry it out and use light oil to get things running smoothly.
I am really upset that I finally got the black oxide surge and it doesn't have the eyeglass screwdriver. I even bought the bit kit and now I have to use my wave if I want to use the mini drivers. They need to offer more versions of the Surge.

Thanks for adding your technique to the comments! Everybody had their own way, but we all agree the Surge kicks ass 😎

Same. Actually

Keep your tools clean and lubricated is what I take from this vid. I know it’s easier said than done but good vid overall. Thank you.
You are taking the right lesson away from this 😂 I would have spared myself a lot of work had I known to lube and clean this tool from the beginning

Thanks for the video, I usually do yearly cleaning and relubrication with Krytox 105g0 and/or KPL, works great for me.

Would u suggest getting black, or do u think stainless would rust less?

I dropped my Wave+ on the wooden floor. When it’s closed, it sort of “bends” a bit. Is that normal? Are there ways of tightening it again?
I’m not 100% clear what you mean about the “bend”. Are the handles not aligned with one another?

do you put Loctite again after you assemble it again?
Yes, but the medium strength, not the full strength
Is the black oxide coating scratch easily?
It does not scratch easily. I have not been able to remove the coating completely, even with a steel brush and solvent bath

No,it is not normal. Ill give you 20$ for it...

You dont like the surge?
Where'd you get the belt clip for it?
Leatherman sells the clip on their website, but just be aware it only comes in a silver finish! www.leatherman.com/pocket-clip-lanyard-ring-130.html
@@inkiron3907 no sir. It definitely comes in black too.
Brake kleen, dry w/compressed air, lube with KPL.
