I made the backback!!! If anyone ever reads this comment, maybe you can learn from my experience. After a few days wearing the backpack, the little strap loops I had sewn into the bottom seam started to fray and to rip off the seam. I undid the seam and redid loops, but this time, I burned the end of the strap. It does not fray anymore! you should really do that! I only needed 1.5 meter of fabric (If you want to save a little money)Also if you are not as experienced as wendy, your seams may not be perfect: making the bag in a dark color hides every single mistake!!!
thanks! I'm making it rn but the fabric is a light colored material I thrifted it tho so i'm fine with that. i'm only a teenager but I have fairly decent sewing skills so ill see how I do. (lol probably trash)
Love the tutorial. I was just commissioned by my nine-yo granddaughter to make her a mini-backpack. Can't wait to try this one and I am infinitely grateful to you for not including needless chitchat and endlessly excruciating chatter and unsolicited details about things nobody cares about. I love how you dove right in and went fast.
I've been sewing for a little while but this is probably not the most beginner friendly project. probably best to attempt with a darker colored fabric and you'll probably end up taking several hours to make this.
I'm so happy I found a tutorial that isn't crap on making the backpack. thank you for taking the time to make this and all the work you put into making it comprehensible. ^_^
Wendy makes this process look so easy! I totally want to do this, but in the end I know I'll be left with a pile of fabric scraps and a puddle of tears rather than a backpack.
I made this! I'm so proud of myself ~ I took me a week due to some design change and struggling to sew on the front pocket. I added a side pouch as well as a hidden zipper pocket inside the backpack. My backpack it two layers thick which is why I struggled a bit. The outside uses a thin beige fabric while the inside is a thicker white cotton fabric for durability and design sake. The shoulder straps I made to look like regular backpack with padding. I decorated it with lace ribbons, bows and fabric flowers I made. The result is a beautiful designed and cute mini backpack. Thanks for the video!
Finally made my very own backpack! I went with a mini style and tried to be concise, but let me know if you have any questions and I'll be here to chat! If you're heading back to school, I wish you the very best!! BE AMAZING

hi, Im grace I love your content/videos they're so inspiring thank you for the tutorials! I have one question what are the measurements because I don't see them in the description? (sorry 😕)
SO SO GOOD! You inspire me so much Wendy! I love sewing but I always get a lack of inspiration because a lot of sewing projects out there are not very modern or trendy. But you totally change the game!! Please never stop!

I started sewing 2 days ago, and this is my end goal, I can't wait to make it 🤩 your sewing videos are amazing and visually satisfying haha, but more important : it's clear enough for a beginner non-native English speaker like me to follow! Thank you for all you do 💛
Same here! I was a beginner and had only made face masks the first time I followed this tutorial and English is not my native language either. I'm curious, did you do it? If not, you should try it!
takwa dhaoui makes me sad thinking about the child factory workers in the 3rd world countries sewing clothing and bags like this and earning not more than a few cents per day.
RIGHT and it makes me appreciate all the backpacks that exist because no machine can do this, only human hands can. Totally justifies all the ones that are super expensive.
Bellaroo_ Girl psss relax, just because she is never going to make it doesn't mean she doesn't like the video or doesn't want to know how to make it. Take it easy~ and don't lash out on people like that. Its bad for your health ya kno.

Glad I found this. I know most rather just buy one but when u just cant find the right color and nice fabric this is the way to go! I like to have something that's custom and unique. Make it to my liking. Thank you!!
OHMYGODDD you're amazing I never understand how people like you spend so much time to make things like this ❤️❤️ I watched the whole 12 minutes without even realizing it 😂😂 just subbed I love ur channel
Ok, so i made this backpack. It isn't difficult, it's just takes time. A lot of time. But wendy shows the steps very clearly so all you need is patience and resolve. Love
Thank you! I’ve been looking for a pattern/tutorial on making a customized backpack. This will be easy to modify to the sizes I need. Very well done tutorial. For those who think it’s too fast, the pause button is your friend!
@@ambotnimooi I am making travel bags to fit in a specific space. I haven't done it yet, but my plan is to make the front and back (my "space" is a little narrower at the top on one side). I don't have the measurements in front of me, but I think the long strip is the measurement all the way around the front/back, plus one inch for the seam. My widths will also be different, to fit my space - width/depth + 1" for seams. I'm also going to make a longer zipper (we'll use these as travel suitcases so I'd like them to open completely to the bottom), and add a few pockets. This is number 4 on my sewing projects list. Hoping that I can do it soon!
I already made two of them and I plan on making more for my friends who want it too! Thank you so much for this tutorial, I am at the very beginning of my sewing journey and I can't believe what I am already capable of thanks to you! Also, each backpack costed about 5% of the price of an original Fjällräven Kånken to make, I think that's kind of amazing
Ruby Fincher no, I wouldn’t say it’s easy, the first one was actually pretty difficult, but it’s possible! I just don’t recommend it as your absolute first project. but besides that it was a great challenge!
i'm comparing this diy backpack to the fjallraven kanken that i own and i'm so incredibly impressed with your attention to detail!! there are so many things that you included that i never noticed about my backpack
I made the backpack using one of those blue IKEA bags that you can get a t the checkout. The plastic/fabric is more than enough to create this backpack, however I recommend getting two bags for the straps. The straps on one bag combine to two meters, but you need over 2,5 meters to make this bag. I will have to add some extra strapping to mine so I can actually put the backpack on :'). You could always use the remaining plastic/fabric as a lining for another project to make it waterproof! If you want to do the same I would suggest you do this if you have a bit more experience (= you've already made a few projects). The stiff plastic makes it even harder to sew the corners and once you have sewn a stitch you can't undo it invisibly, you've poked a lasting hole in the fabric. Don't be scared to do it anyways however! This is a very fun project to make and in my opionion it looks really cool to use an IKEA bag like this :). Let me know if you are trying this too, maybe we can share experiences!
This.Is.AWESOME!! So much work, but waaay less than the 'Fanny Pack'. Love how you put the speed in your tuts. Together with the blog it's define! Thank you!!
That's also another reason why like sewing, to have the amazed look as I say I made it. Also sewing your own clothes or accessories help the environment with recycled fabrics and gives you freedom to make your clothes more unique 💫
You should get one!! they are amazing and you don;t need to buy the $600 ones just start with a $50 one and see if you get the hang of it ( but it's hard to not break the needles when you start lol )
lol I know that this is like... super late, but my sowing machine is 15 dollars, and I literally do everything with it. You don’t need something expensive
God I love this so much, it's really pretty! You're so talented! I don't know anything about sewing tbh but I lvoe watching those videos, I wish I could sew ;_; How long did it take you to make this bag?
Your Video was so inspiring that I made one for my work. Mine is about the double in size, inspired by your grid organizer I included this as well to make dividers. Instead of using two zippers I used an endless zip integrating two pulls. That 's quite a cheap alternative to an two pull zip. This rucksack is packed with a loooooot of things and does a brilliant job! Thank you!
Mina Nazari actually older sewing machines tend to be stronger, since they were made in a time where they were used intensively. I have a newer Singer machine that went crazy and wouldnt sew through even one layer of my (to be fair, pretty thick) fabric. Tried it with my grandma's 40 year old soviet made machine and it did well even at the points where i had a 4-layer strap sandwiched by a layer of the same fabric on each side!
and I just made this again. I'm addicted to this project! I went to hobby lobby and there are some super fun fabrics so I am going to make some of these for friends! it's a really awesome toddler backpack!
I'm late to the party on this one but I love this pattern. Supplies ordered and thought I'd search and watch a video for it. Glad I found you. Nice 2 zipper idea. I paid 12 for my zipper alone. Could've just used 2 zippers. Thanks for sharing. Yours turned out so nice.
Your videos are always ON POINT! I also have a sewing channel and I KNOW how much time it can take to make a video. Seriously, I have so much respect I don't even understand how you can make so many videos! Good job and please continue because your videos are the best
I made the backpack too! It went really well and was very easy except for the connecting the middle part to the front since I used a thick fabric but I would hundred percent make this again and recommend other people to make it too! It’s super good to use and nice the only thing is, I would recommend using a really good quality strap because the plastic ones keep frailing and i almost ripped out the straps of mine, I would also recommend making the straps 8 inches longer if you use a bad quality plastic one in case of frail and instead of 2.5 inches for the strap adjusters cut of 4 inches and also cut the really long 41 inch piece of fabric about 2 inches longer as it shortens as you sew it around the front, oh and burn the straps at the end to stop it from frilling!
This tutorial is a lifesaver! Currently making a mini/laptop (iPad sized) franken-Kanken and this vid has been so useful as I’ve been making my pattern pieces!
My daughter got me to make this backpack. The pocket was a pain to sew on. But got there. It looks amazing and gets loads of great comments from her friends and they don't believe that it's homemade! Thanks for the tutorial. Very well explained and easy to follow. I stitched on army logo in leather on the pocket so it does give it that designer look.
I want to try this so bad! I have a sewing machine that I got as a gift, but I'm always too nervous to use it... you make it look so easy. I have been watching a lot of your videos and they are making me feel more prepared to try to using it! Thanks for all of your help!
I made one myself and followed this tutorial. English isn't my mother language but i would say you did a pretty good job in explaining. Although I would say this isn't really a beginner's project. So people watch out if you're a beginner. This takes some time and she makes it look like it's super easy.
I realized that I never commented on this! I made this about a month ago and I'm obsessed! It was a fun (somewhat frustrating) project and I'm in love with the result!

Woah you did that?!? did you have to redo anything? did you end up in tears?

Thank you!!
First video I see from you, I LOVE it. Subbed! You seem like such a nice person!
Really enjoy your editing too :)
Quiet Mind ditto!!
"Fjallraven conken" In love when people who's not swedish talks some swedish
@millennial falcon It really isn't :P
What would be a better transliteration? Just outta curiosity
Me when I try to say Pewdiepie merch brands
Amanda how do you pronounce it? im super curious haha :)
ä is like “eh”
å is like “oh”
Your videos always make me want to start designing and making new things, thanks for the inspiration!
i've never sewed a day in my life and i'm not entirely sure why i'm watching this, but it's really cute and i really want to make it!
wow....so much patience and... just WOW GOOD JOB DUDE
I wish I had a sewing machine because it'd be cool when people askw where did i buy it and id tell them I made it!!
Hand sewing is a thing? That's what I use.
@@MariamAhmed-nj4nz where did you get it? I'd like to get a sewing machine but I'm still looking 😊
Wendy : How to make expensive backpack
Video : Seems easy
Me : spends enough money to buy the backpack and fails each time
God I love this so much, it's really pretty! You're so talented! I don't know anything about sewing tbh but I lvoe watching those videos, I wish I could sew ;_; How long did it take you to make this bag?
This bag was a day's work, but that's with me adjusting and filming a camera at the same time.
Thank you!
You make this look so easy!! Wonderful job. The bag came out beautifully!
ugh i love this !
i want you to teach me how to sew so i can make this in like ... every color 😅❣
Yesss
Watching this is torture, I don't even own a sewing machine >.
same
lol i feel you
my sewing machine is twice as old as I am and I could never even hope for it to be able to sew something like this lol
lmaooo I have a 30-sum year old White brand and I'm debating whether to try this or not
Mina Nazari actually older sewing machines tend to be stronger, since they were made in a time where they were used intensively. I have a newer Singer machine that went crazy and wouldnt sew through even one layer of my (to be fair, pretty thick) fabric. Tried it with my grandma's 40 year old soviet made machine and it did well even at the points where i had a 4-layer strap sandwiched by a layer of the same fabric on each side!
for the 2 head zipper, just buy upholstery zips from walmart.. I have them and it's just a super long zipper with extra heads so you can cut to size
Amazing tip! Thank you!!
+withwendy np Wendy. thanks for this video, it honestly saved me from having to buy a backpack. 😆😁
and I just made this again. I'm addicted to this project! I went to hobby lobby and there are some super fun fabrics so I am going to make some of these for friends! it's a really awesome toddler backpack!
omg this is perfect for toddlers, they probably look so cute on them.
This was recommended by YT and I realized this was the 1st video I watched of you!!! I'm literally a fan for 5 years now. 😅😅🥰
UPDATE: I FINISHED THIS BACKPACK 4 YEARS AFTER STARTING IT 😂 I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT
WHOA! This is so cute!
Thanks K&P!! :)
Omg you should sell these on etsy because I'll buy it lmao
I'm late to the party on this one but I love this pattern. Supplies ordered and thought I'd search and watch a video for it. Glad I found you. Nice 2 zipper idea. I paid 12 for my zipper alone. Could've just used 2 zippers. Thanks for sharing. Yours turned out so nice.
i’m currently in the process of upcycling an old pair of jeans into a backpack inspired by this!! thanks so much!!
Your videos are always ON POINT! I also have a sewing channel and I KNOW how much time it can take to make a video. Seriously, I have so much respect I don't even understand how you can make so many videos! Good job and please continue because your videos are the best
Thank you!! That means so much to me!
This is amazing! Just a little to confusing for me. (The sewing)
You are super talented! 🙌🏻
This is the best tutorial of the kanken backpack EVER ❤️ kisses from Brazil 🇧🇷💕
WTF THIS IS AMAZING
this made me really want to learn how to sew oh my gosh that's such a good skill to have
You know you’re fearless when you can say the name of the backpack so confidently
I wanna do this
But we all know I would end up in the hospital crying
• Prinzalina Wallis • I believe in you
Me too
Same lol
Omg ur so talented!😲
SO GOOD VIDEO I ACTUALLY THINK THAT I COULD MAKE THAT AND GIVE IT TO MY MOM AS A GIFT😆 KEEP GOING🖒
I mean... Im not gonna make this... but I am so impressed *_*
This is really creative
trying to convince my grandmother to make this for me omg
I realized that I never commented on this! I made this about a month ago and I'm obsessed! It was a fun (somewhat frustrating) project and I'm in love with the result!
Awesome. This was an easy make. Great looking bag. Imagine it in a print of a favorite show.
