Using Mixed Media to Create Complexity and then Simplifying with Shape

- The contrast of two opposites - Simplicity and Complexity always fascinates me. In this video I demonstrate how I create a complex surface and then create a composition by using simple shapes.
Using Collage, Paint, Acrylic Ink, and Paint pens, I build the surface in layers and then go about finding a composition made of simple shapes. Once the complex surface is created in this demonstration, the focus switches to simplifying to create an interesting and integrated composition.

It is interesting how you are thinking of shapes all the time you are painting. I'm more of a slap/dash abstract painter, I don't think of shapes, mostly contrasts. Very intriguing how you go from complex to a more toned-down composition. Nice work! Especially liked the one on the right. I also like the way you get right into it at the start without a lot of preliminary chatter.
Thanks for the feedback.
That’s one of the reasons why I love Judy’s art. It’s the contrast between shapes and shapeless areas of color and texture.
Thank you for including closed captions.
You're welcome 😊
Love love love these❤❤❤
I like how you reference your own work for inspiration. Our own critic can be cruel, especially when fueled by comparison, but highlighting what you love about your own work can encourage and liberate a person’s personal creation. 😊 Thanks for sharing all your insights. 😃
my pleasure, thanks for the feedback.
Love these videos that just go straight into a technique from start to finish. These are sooo helpful Judy! I heard that artists get stuck often at a 'stage' in their painting, either the start, middle or end. I struggle from middle to end, how much black/whites to add and still be integrated - abstract art is very difficult, people don't realise how probably harder it can be than realism....!!! I'm so grateful for your videos anyway, thanks from a newbie! 😊
You're not wrong - it is MUCH more difficult than representational work.
Really liked this video! What brand sketchbook are you using? It took all the layers really well
Crescent Rendr Bleedproof Sketchbook 180g 21 x 28cm
What is the tool that you are using to make a straight edge? I have not been able to located that particular too. Thanks for your assistance,
It's a painters straight edge - go to a hardware store.
Hi, Judy. May I ask what type of sketchbook you are using?
