      It's easier if you break it down, those are compound words! We have em in English some, but boy do Germans love them.
      Lets take the word Haustier for example. Not too long, but what could it mean, and how could we memorize it? Well lets break it up. Haus tier. Well we know Haus means house, and tier is animal. House animal? Must mean pet!
      Thats how I learn new compound words. I look at what each individual word means, so instead of learning a whole new word, you just know the smaller words.

    With over 15 years experience in language learning and teaching, I have found the best way to learn any language is to begin by exposing myself solely to audio for a couple of hours each day for 6 - 8 weeks, while aiming all the while to visualise how words might be spelt. It is important for this content to start basic, progressing to a post-beginners standard, and for grammar rules to be kept simple, giving learners insight into sentence constructions. Repetition is quintessential, so as to become confident with pronunciation and intonation, as well as being comfortable with the sound of one's own voice in a foreign language. Once I have a solid foundation, my preference is to learn vocabulary from dictionaries and construct my own sentences, and then delve into topic-based audio courses which introduce dialogues and include accompanying scripts. Around this time, I will focus more on verb tense conjugations and relevant endings, before looking, after a year or so, at colloquial language and idiomatic expressions.

    • @philipp529
      @philipp529 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@nameless5053 Well, I don't remember actually learning them (it's just natural to automatically learn them when you learn a new word) and after a while you kinda just know but if you're really going to learn German from zero you will have to memorize it. There are examples where it does make sense, for example "die Frau" (the woman) which has a feminin article. But then there is things like "Der Tisch" (the table) which has a masculine article altough it is an inanimate object. In most cases there is no indication to what the right article is, so just learn the words with there article and at some point you will just get the hang of it.
      I guess what I am trying to say is, that while their might not be a logical indication to which article you choose you will start to subconsciously judge what it could be based on all the words you've already learned, so at some point a wrong article just sounds very weird. I don't know how to explain that better, sorry.
      Ah, and I don't want to demotivate you but the article can also change, when the word stands in a different case (don't know if that's the right word). For example: "Der Tisch" (nominative) "Des Tisches" (genitive) "Dem Tisch" (dative) and "den Tisch" (accusative).

Yes, crapy but I can find the toilet and ask how much etc. Its a strat and learning a new culture is cool. I know you have reached your first goal. I dont care I want you to be able to have some fun with this as well. It is an art.
