Hi matt do you losen the drag all the way for these big casts

Yes! The drag in the reel in this video is totally shot from too many casts where either a) I forgot to take it out of gear before casting or b) I was using a big heavy power handle that snapped the reel (an Ambassadeur variant) back into gear due to the shock of the rod swing stopping dead at the end of the cast. That last one is not an issue with Penns, which have a free spool lever mechanism separate from - and unaffected by - the handle moving.
I learned pretty quickly that I needed to loosen the drag before every cast as a contingency, and I bought a much smaller, light handle that's not as subject to inertia.

Thanks Jose - by "open bail", do you mean spinning reels like the Penn 706Z with no bail wire? Or open face conventional reels without the level wind apparatus (like I'm using in this video)? Rods for spinning reels have bigger guides that are placed on the opposite axis from where the smaller guides for a conventional reel or "casting" rod would be. Other than that, for pendulum casting, you want a 11.5' to 13' fast action rod with a pretty soft tip. If you're really interested in it, look up John Holden and his book "Long Distance Casting." You can get very inexpensive copies on Amazon and Ebay. He gets into the details that every would-be caster should know about surf rods before investing in a serious one.
