Working on that engine in a modern truck would be a major pain. I'm a road service mechanic, have you ever worked on a DD-15 & 16 with the compressor on the back? A rear gear train isn't a new idea for industrial engines, two stroke Detroits had it way back in the 1940's.

They can produce over 600 hp with ease when properly set up . Back in the late ‘80’s when I was Truck shop Foreman at Hawthorne Cat here in San Diego Ca. We had a lot of customers trucks running 400 plus , 500 plus & even a few making 600 plus corrected REAR WHEEL horsepower figures on our Superflow Chassis Dyno & even built up one customers 3408 with twin compound turbos and custom Bosch Fueling system sourced from a guy in Wisconsin I believe that did tractor pulls and a custom set of Built in Peoria Illinois Cat injectors for it that made a very respectable 1785 horsepower on our engine dynamometer at over 130 psi of boost !! There was over $50-k invested in that engine build with everything from Ceramic coated pistons to machining the block & heads for custom fire-rings made out of Stainless steel to seal pressures in each cylinder along with all the associated piping to set up the twin turbo setup. Once it was installed into the Peterbilt truck it was slated for it produced over 1250 rear wheel horsepower and held it effortlessly ( our Dyno was only rated for 1500 hp at that time ) and that truck FLEW out on the highway . They hauled heavy equipment ( lowboy multi axle trailer) with it and had a Hell of a time with driveline issues as I recall . If my memory is correct they eventually de-tuned it a bit to Quell some of the high boost & torque issues at lower throttle positions to make it a bit easier to drive . Those were some good old days with minimal intrusion from our EPA & government. Wish we could somehow go back again ……🤔🤨😐

@@roballan4944 3126/C7 to be pedantic. Re the spacer plate the 3176/C-12/C13 have all had mid supported liners that is the step in the liner is about halfway down the stroke to give better support. The 3176 had a spacer deck that filled that space - but if you didn't keep glycol well above 30% it could get cavitated away - this was replaced by iron with the C-12 as casting technology had improved so that the weight penalty was no longer significant. The C-12 was Cat's most reliable on-highway engine - at least in Australia, bar none.

@@outdoor044 You are correct about the filter as the emissions from the breather are measured as part of the exhaust and that now includes both a mass AND a particle count requirement so you can't afford to NOT have it VERY well filtered. Alternative is to put it into the engine, Cat has never liked putting anything other than clean air into the engines. '04 ACERT avoided EGR. '07 ACERT brought exhaust in AFTER the DPFs (and a whole lot of other issues as it turned out). EGR was done when required on the earthmoving side as it was preferable at the beginning to requiring AdBlue/DEF, Cat equipment can be in some incredibly remote locations.

Big bore mean more torque which moves the wheels or gets work done, not seeing with this little 13 liter C13D with high horsepower kiddie bs. Going backwards with the cheap plastic filter housing would be removed and adapted by my standards to multi- spin on steel filter assembly. Then the camshaft would be a pain in the ass removing from the rear of the engine like a Paccrap engine. Have to remove the engine from truck or equipment to gain access. Then the variable turbos always breaks compare to just one standard turbo. I probably let it sit on the shelf in the Cat dealer and stay with my 3406 style engine.

The European engines have had rear gear trains for years and since the trucks are cab overs that makes sense. Even in an off road application you mean to tell me it’s going to be easier to pull an engine for a camshaft change than to pull a radiator? He says less vibration I say doubtful and by how much. John Deere has done the same thing with their new engines, so we will see. Unfortunately these engineers never work on or repair these things so that isn’t included in their rational thought. A good running cat engine in a highway truck again would be a hot item.
