Rod with another heart achingly, soulful vocal and the greatest good time rock groove band of all time-Not always in tune or in time,but no one cared,cos the sound was raw, emotive and immense and I was there.
Rod had such an amazing tone to his voice,one of the best vocalists ever.
It amazes me how just a band playing their own instruments is almost a novelty now. When I was a kid in the 70s learning guitar, this is what you strived for.

Having seen him many times over the years, I have to say that my favorite time period was when he performed with Faces.
Ronnie Woods is so underrated as a guitarist. His playing has so much feeling in it. But then again, The Faces were one of the best rock and roll bands ever.
Rod and Ronnie were made for each other. I felt sad when he joined the Stones.

@@grahamreeve673 not just Mick Taylor, but Jimmy Miller as well. Taylor's skills were second to absolutely none, but the loss of Miller as a producer hurt as well. Under Miller's watch, The Stones truly earned the title of the world's greatest rock and roll band.

I wouldn't even say only "white". Rod had a vocal character all his own. I'd put him up against anyone. Black or white. Very sensitive vocalist. And often a subtle lyricist. See "Lady Day" or "Scarred and Scared", Killing of Georgie. He was a bit of a bimbo for sure. But when it came time to be serious, he could be.
One of the greatest souls singers period.

I'd forgotten how rockin'-ly soulful Rod's voice was. I think his poppier material in more recent years clouded my memory of his earlier material. Excellent performance!
Love Faces, saw them in 1971 , 1972, when they were absolutely superb. God bless Ronnie Lane, it was his band really in those days. Here it's Rodney's band, but this is a brilliant vocal performance from him. No denying that !! My favourite Faces songs " I'm losing you" and " maybe I'm amazed" unbeatable. Just a fun entertaining band.
I was only 13 when I heard handbags and gladrags for the first time. Every picture tells a story, gasoline alley... 58 now. Still makes me cry. Thank you Fil, from North Carolina.
Gary Coleman, " Handbags and Gladrags", now that is what I call a SONG! The structure is strange, the timing wanders, and the song meanders all over the place, and it's kind of oblique and hard to make sense of, but it sucks me in every time I hear it!
I love Rod Stewart, I love Etta James, and I love I`d Rather Go Blind.

I saw the Faces live in 1971 at Bradford University. . . Universities were the live circuit then. We thought we were going to see Small Faces, so it was quite early in Rod Stewart's incarnation. I was sitting on the floor only 6 rows back from the stage and Rod strutted out . . . so disappointed for no Stevie Marriott!!! But that strut, the stacked shoes and the haircut!!! Then the show started . . . his voice and the clean, solid music. Unforgettable, incredible, irreplaceable band! Thanks Fil 😎💚🌍🙏💚
Started listening to Rod when I was 11 . I've seen him 6 times over the years. I guess he was my pre-teen Rock and Roll crush. Love that raspy voice. Still love him today.

Loved Itchycoo Park by Small Faces. The flange on the drums and overall mix was a ground breaking move. I still love to listen to it.

Gasoline Alley is amazing. But "Smiler" is on a a different level. Check out Ron Wood on "I've Grown Accustom to Her Face." Mind blowing for a popular rock album at the time.

Long John Baldry was the main supporter and spark of both Rod and Elton John, by recognizing their talent and unselfishly let them grow as artist, leave and become what they became, rock royalty. 70s Rod, was the best Rod. Saw them twice. Pre and post Woody leaving. Excellent both times. Cut Across Shorty, Mandolin Wind, Gasoline Alley... His (their) best writing period, for sure.

First band I ever saw, Aug 73 Doncaster, Top Rank., I queued all day for a ticket. I was buzzin' the next day at school. Loved his music from the moment I first heard Maggie May on the chart rundown on a Sunday teatime in 1971!
Faces was my favorite work from Rod. Frickin awesome!

Amazing! I love Rod Stewart and the Faces! They were my first intro to listening to different kinds of music in early 71 & 72. You do such a great analysis and it is spot on! All of your analysis videos are fresh and go right to the core. They aren’t the same stuff over and over. With Mick Taylor leaving the Stones in Dec of 1974 you have to think Keith, who loves playing with Ronnie, that he remembered this event. Hard to believe that Ronnie has been a Rolling Stone since 1975 and I saw the Stones in 1975 at a World Series of Rock in Cleveland Stadium! He sounded like he had always been a Rolling Stone. Thanks Fil...great memories!

I saw them five times back in the day. One of my favorite bands. As a drummer I always liked Kenny Jones' playing. As a young man I learned how to play for the song and not myself. As Keith once said: "It's not what you play, but what you don't play."

First Steps by small Faces is mindblowing.
Amazing performer. Saw him in concert in 1988 and it was amazing. Got hit and bruised by a soccer ball too! Hell yeah!
Saw Rod, when I was home in 1977. Paid $15 for the "cheap seats". Good concert. Later when I was working in the Philippines, they showed a recorded Rod Stewart concert on TV in 1981 or 1982. It was from the same tour I saw. Loved Rods early solo work, some great tunes, classics. I knew when Ronnie joined the Stones, it was the end of the Faces. Still great to see this line up.
Great choice Fil. Speaking of Faces, maybe you could analyze Small Faces one of these days, a highly underrated band with the great Steve Marriott from the British Invasion era. Or Humble Pie...

Glad you talked about and nailed the description of the guitar interplay with Ronnie and Keith at the end. Two masters at what they do when they were young and flying highest. Rod absolutely owned this deliverance and his soul interpretation was perfect for this song. RIP Ronnie Lane who was so instrumental at the beginning until his rural living and health changed things for him.
Rod Stewart can't do anything "bad"! (even his divorces were/are "good"!)...I'm amazed at all the different genres he's done over the years and LOVED them all! ...and Keith Richards is still kicking! LOVE'em! thanks Fil! ☮️
My favorite band
I have a 1962 Fender Princeton Brown that used to be Rod Stewart's practice amp.
He gave it to a roadie.
The roadium swapped it for half a gram of cocaine.
I got it from Jeff Bennett who built One On One Studios in North Hollywood. The studio is now called 17 Hertz. Jeff also gave me a Stratocaster for Christmas.
It's a hardtail 1978 bullet neck with Gibson PAF pickups, 1 tone 1 volume knob and a selector switch, with Fender Grover pegs. Woogie, Joe Satriani's
Guitar tech was there the day I played for them. When I sat down at the table. Jeff said to me "how long have you been able to do that?" I answered " since I was a kid." The whole table laughed. That's why Jeff gave me the Strat.
The Princeton, and a Maestro Echoplex, 1978. Bitchin. This was in 2005 on a deck by the swimming pool. For Christmas
with a card that read from Santa.

Damn! Saw these guys at the Boston Garden in '75. Peter Frampton was the opener. Tickets were $7.50.

I saw Rod Stewart and the Faces in 1974. It still stands as one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Rod doesn't have a conventionally good voice, but he is one of the best singers I have ever heard.
Faces band made one of my favorite albums Ooh la la, Rod S. vocals are are great and favorite. This was a nice slow song, good point about the drummer and bass, the backbone of any band, holding the tempo solid, good video

Love your analysis Fil. I am fortunate enough to have seen most of the greats like Rod at least once in concert and know the talent it took to produce the music so loved today still. I admit I had to pass on your miley cyrus deal as I don't consider that music or talent, especially with auto tune, but I love when you review the true talents that made, what I consider, the best in the business! Btw, I have watched your own videos and I think you are extremely talented and wish you all the best in your endeavors. Don't give up or give in!
Actually his review was quite good and he described a producing tip which was quite interesting. I have learned to leave my preferences aside since you learn so much from the Professor.
Another great choice to analyze Fil ! I saw Rod solo in 1976 in Chicago and 1984 in Indianapolis with Jeff Beck as a no show :-( and imho no one has more soul in their singing , one of a kind ! Great job as always Fil !

Faces were a tremendous outfit. Keith's "Standard Tuning" open G blues tuning sits right in there with this blues number.
Loved the Faces, but Rod always had great musicians with him. Specifically love Jim Cregan. He could do it all. Found Rod singing Ain't Superstitious on the Truth album and have been a fan since. I was 15 then and am 67 now. Still a fan. Love the older ones like Jo's Lament, Lady Day, Sweet Lady Mary, etc.

Good pull Fil. Been a fan of Small Faces, Faces, Rod Stewart and the various artists who played with them forever. Just got to say Ronnie looks about 12 years old here. He was a real kid then. The talent that is seen here for me was the beginning of the British Invasion to The U.S. it's when I really started paying attention to music outside of The West Coast sound in Rock and Blues music. Rod and the boys really show their music muscle here. Thanks Fil.

The depth of your knowledge continues to amaze. And you always get your facts right. Just wanted to point out that the Faces were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame with the Small Faces. Which completely pissed off both Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan as they saw the bands entirely separate entities.
Love Woody in Faces, because he was able to let his light shine. With Stones, he had to hold back because he was newcomer - then there was Keef!!!

I loved the Faces and I also loved the Small Faces. Who doesn't like a little Itchycoo Park? Steve Marriott is a great singer and player!! I also liked Humble Pie because of Marriott. He was such an asset to any band! Also, this was such a great song. Rod had the perfect voice for it!! The BEST of Etta James!

Faces was one of the 1st concerts I ever attended. It was around this time. They played at the Hec Edmondson Pavillion in Seattle. I didn't get to really enjoy it, however, because I was surrounded by older people doing drugs. I was an innocent young girl, and scared to death! I did get to see Rod, years later at the Gorge in George. But, Faces were way better!!
