    Actually, I just saw The Pirate Planet for the first time and I'm convinced Douglas Adams wrote the part of the Captain for Brian Blessed. That man shouts 97% of his dialogue and in 1970's Brittish TV, who else could pull that off besides Brian Blessed?

    • @fuzzballzz36
      @fuzzballzz36 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bruce Purchase pulled it off fairly well!

    The Ribos Operation was a misfire? Absolute horseshit. That's easily one of the best scripts he ever wrote for Who in a sea of brilliant scripts he wrote for Who.

    Just watched Stones of blood and remembered your comment. Yes, the subtext of the interspecies lesbian romance between an alien criminal and an elderly professor really is there. Very there.

    Great series! Thanks for making it. I could do without the swear words, but that's just the Dad in me. Now clean up your room and do your homework.
    While hardcore Dr. Who fans always point to the Hinchcliffe-Holmes era as the greatest peak, there is much to be said of the often-maligned Graham Williams era. This season is a very good example of the qualities of this era, especially the humor and Tom Baker's charisma, which was always the best thing about this show. The tone is definitely lighter but not as goofy as the disco camp tone of the next season (Creature From the Pit is a guilty pleasure for sure, definitely MST3K quality), and it's a lot of fun. The only problem with the whole "key to time" concept, of course, is the complete lack of any final resolution. The whole thing was a MacGuffin, anyway, and the ending is almost like seeing Tom Baker make faces at the camera and go, "PFFFT!!"
    That said, I did read one person's theory that the White and Black Guardians are actually the same being, which is rather interesting. Ah, well, whatever, never mind. This season was considered a classic back in the 1980s and if I were looking for episodes to share with the family, I'd probably go for something here.
    The Armageddon Factor was the first Dr. Who episode (ahem, PBS "movie" format) I ever saw as a kid, and while it certainly had its issues, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's close enough to Star Wars, Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica that I could jump in easily, and Tom Baker's sheer force of personality won me over. No doubt it's far easier to watch in the UK format with 30-minute episodes, because at a three-hour stretch, it's a bit long.
    Finally, once again with feeling: nobody gets to complain about cheesy special effects in Classic Who anymore. It's the year 2020. You know what you're signing up for.

      I know this is three years after the fact, but The Gamers is still going strong and has a new season that just came out recently. If you like the idea of a comedy webseries about tabletop roleplaying games, I can't recommend it enough. And not just because I did some uncredited work with ZOE in post-production...

    Okay, question. Does anyone know what the Cthulhu song in the episode is? I like the sound of it, but after about an hour of looking I can't find it. Might be because I'm bad at looking for things though. Also thank you Diamanda for making these. As someone who only has seen the new Who so far, this is actually really entertaining.

    I've seen The Armageddon Factor twice now and I still can't remember a thing about it, like, I know the shadow's in it, Lalla Ward is in it, Drax is in it, evil K9, the ending, and that's it

    • @georgeparkins777
      @georgeparkins777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's good. I mean, there's a lot of tedious mucking around in corridors, but Lalla Ward is alright, the General is alright, and the plot is entertaining, while clearly a product of the Cold War-era nuclear paranoia. I don't know why I can't make it sound better, I actually really like it, if only for the camp factor. My only dislike is that the Doctor doesn't do much.

  • @georgeparkins777
    @georgeparkins777 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually had the opposite impression of "Kroll." I thought the Kroll puppet (and for that matter the costumes) looked okay, but the serial was so mind-numbingly boring that I couldn't quite finish it.
    And "The Armageddon Factor" had some things working for it. Time weirdness, decent guest actor, K9 was actually funny somehow... it's one of my favorites.
