Had food from 1975 to 2012 before I moved out of Mumbai. Small but amazing place
I used to eat lunch here regularly, back in 1985-86. Tasty, wholesome food, in a decent middle class milieu. And the cost was between Rs.15 and 20/-. Very happy to see that “Mani’s” is still going strong, and that the regulars are continuing to patronise the hotel. Hats off to the current management for their dedication and commitment in continuing the tradition!!!

Just a small correction on the cuisine - this is mainly‘ Palghat food - where the Tamilian Brahmins with Kerala combo reside, as also Tamilian origin people in other parts of Kerala reside. This is almost the same as the Vegetarian food in Tamil Nadu.

I forgot to tell you that my cousin and me had ordered a thali in Mani's lunch home in Chembur some months back. It was too good. Actually this is Palakkad Iyer cuisine. It's not a typical Mallu thali neither is it TamilNadu cuisine. Just for info :-)

Malayalee & keralite Tamilians keep fighting over ownership of dishes. One call is sadya, others shor or something like that.
Tamilnadu meals are vastly different and you will rarely find it in Mumbai.
For that you need to travel to tamilnadu. There are variety of vegetarian thalis. Tamilnadu Iyer, Iyengars, chettiyar, nadar. Then Chennai, madurai, Kumbakonam, coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur etc.
Fundamentally they are driven by Temple prasadam like Puliogarai, sakkaraipongal, panagam etc.

Studied in SIES and Mani’s was my lunch place after practicals … monthly pass was Rs 150 I think (Circa 1986) loved the food and Mani Mama was always kind and gave me seat early so that I could go back to college to attend classes … great memory and yeah on one of the days they served peerkangay thogayal… totally yummy

The migrated people from Tamil Nadu who settled as per the wishes of then Samuthiri ( zamorin ) King and Travancore Raja of Thiruvananthapuram of Kerala took this recipe in their list ..
There is a saying Sambhar was discovered by a specific group...which is not..because Sambhar in South India varies every 40 kms ..their taste and mix..
During temple and festive occasion..Sambhar is made without onion ,garlic..etc..
Also in Kerala not just migrated tam brahms but many familes make absolutely great Sambhar because its a essential part of Sadhya in all temple ,marriage functions .
Even the Payasams - Prathamans only Kerala and Best Cooks (the old way ) makes the best .

Food looks excellent. Yum yum food. My husband was a regular eater at Mani’s Cafe when he was a bachelor working in Mumbai. He paid Rs 2.20 then 2.50 in 1986. He still remembers and reminisces his olden day memories.👍👍

I like punjabi food but for daily meal south indian with puri or fresh made chapati is best, now a days many hotels serve readymade chapatis, also andhra style with pappum & lots of ghee, drink butter milk instead of water in between, cool drinks are poisonous with meals, this is not kerala style but tamilnadu style also you can call it as Karnataka style
Actually, chapati the maharashtrian item added in Maharashtra in South Indian thali.actually we do not get chapati when we visit South States. Dosas is their authentic item.
Hello Alka! One word WOW! Yesterday itself I had the opportunity to have an authentic Keralite thali in one borivali temple. This thali as said looks to be very healthy, homely and as you rightly said easy to digest. The rice with dal, sambhar, rasaam looks yummy. Add to it the papadam and achar .... totally awesome. Subji's also looks tasty. Payasam was top of the chart. The curd rice at south Indian restaurants is incomparable. Must say the thali was really worth it..Wonder if the younger generations are going to frequent such lovely places. Thanks for sharing. Warm Regards.

I used to take my lunch and dinner for about four years during my bachelor days, about 37 years Nice to see this video. It is in the same place andni change. Glad to hear the food quality is still the same. It was like I used to take food at home as mostly the food is prepared in palghat style.

Respected Anchor, it's just like any other, south Indian hotel, this you should note. Next, the way, you're mixing the curries with rice, will entirely ruin the dishes. You don't pour ' Dal ' over rice, instead, you should mix rice with, dal, saambaar. Only rasam to be poured over rice. While eating, now and then, you should taste, the thaalimpu. Along with, saambaar, and dal, you should not forget to take ' papad ' Also, a tinge of lemon pickle will add to the taste. When you do, videos on SI thali, you should do, some home work.
