Small correction harald This small steps you mentioned in the rock not the old steps these are threads for gear wheels. In the past of this rock having lift for climbe to palace. Did you think a king use this kind of hard route to went his mansion past this rock having elevator
If there are foundations why they didn't drill a hols, it's much stronger than this steps, don't know exactly you guy's are correct.but I found this informations after refer multiple books.
Drilling was not necessary to hold the foundation intact. Laying blocks of granite or bricks over the "small steps" is enough for laying the foundations on the rock surface. Anyway, If they are to drill the rock, then how would have they done it? I mean the method and the materials used and how they've done it?? What is your idea? Just curious bro! 👍 Cheers!! 👍
I absolutely love it when you add a bit of information on the history of the places you visit with the pictures and the narration in the background!! It's been a while since you have done it and its truly a treat.

Last year i was on this rock as well and the view is so amazing. With your eyes you can see so much detail. One of the best places, even it's a touristic spot.
That is not rain water there is a water plumbing system still no one knows where it's come from. As u can see this water never got empty from this tank also u can see there was no rain like few months
From an ancient history perspective Harald, this is one of the best thus far. Thank you Harald for all your endeavours. Truly sublime content when you're flying solo. Comical and fascinating when you're with Bald and absolutely entertaining when you're with Bald and Simon. Waiting patiently to find out where you guys are at right now!
Few corrections. Water in the pool is not rain water. Theres an ancient pumping system to the top but mechanism is still a mistry. And that rock is not for prisoners . Its for roll over the cliff when theres an enemy attack. King made this edifice to protect himself from his elder brothers attack.
Thank you Harald for taking us along with you to the Sumit..I will never be able to climb this so I appreciate every video you make. You always take your videos so much further than anyone else and truly you're the very best!!! You're making our dreams come true! God Bless you!😃

Hi Harald !! With all due respect you are my favorite TH-camr now a days. And I have watched all of your Srilankan adventure , I am still watching all your other videos as well. There are actually no words to describe how wonderful and well captured footage that you have put together to make all these Vlogs. Sigiriya kingdom is my favorite place in srilanka, and will be forever the favorite place. It actually has more treasures places hidden in sigiriya kingdom which only most of the old locals knows as some of the old locals I know have been working in that place for preserve the sigiriya rock from being distorted, like 60 , 70 years back they were actually few of the guardian of the sigiriya rock. I met one person through one of my friend actually. He was about 70+ years old and a local. That person came with me when I said that I wanted to see the kingdom. I was actually surprised !!! He took me to places where actually people has never been in years. Those places had many treasures stories behind which I learned from him as he explained to me each and every thing he knew about. I wish I could describe all those to you. This is how sigiriya kingdom actually became my favorite place. Because it’s a historical miracle. I took time to write this comment because when I saw this video I saw how excited were you to know about the past and about the hidden treasures places. Same as you I my self is a person who loves historical places which has treasures stories behind. One day when you back in srilanka If you are Interested we will go on a mission in sigiriya rock and the pidurangala rock ( which king kashyapa hide his treasure ) as well and search for hidden places and learn all those stories behind them. Like I said to that the best person you should take is a local person who knows about the place. So then, stay safe for now. !!! Keep uploading your wonderful documentaries. I have learnt soo much from them so far 😇
1. The citadel on top of Sigiriya was built by King Kasyapa who ruled from 477 to 495 CE. He choose this as his royal residence as he was worried of potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne. From atop of Sigiriya he had unobstructed views of the surrounding area. 2. The rock is 200 metres high and visitors can walk the 1,200 steps, divided amongst a number of staircases, to the top. 3. King Kasyapa’s life and rule was full of controversy. He was born to a non-royal concubine and had no right to the throne. Consequently he rebelled against his king father Dhatusena, imprisoning him and eventually having him killed, entombing him in a wall. 4. Prior to King Kasyapa using Sigiriya as his residence, it’s thought the rock was a Buddhist monastery. It was once again used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death till it was abandoned in the 14th century. 5. On a plateau halfway up the rock Kasyapa built a gateway in the form of a huge lion with a staircase emerging from the lion’s mouth, hence its name meaning Lion Rock. 6. Considered one of the best examples of ancient urban planning, the site of Sigiriya became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. 7. King Kasyapa created a ‘mirror wall’ so highly polished that he could see his reflection as he walked by. There is also evidence of a wall, 140 metres long and 40 metres high, covered with paintings of ladies. These paintings are still partly visible today. Visitors inscribed their thoughts of the painted women along the ‘mirror wall’. This graffiti is of great interest to historians, showing the development of the Sinhala language and script. 8. The city includes water gardens, a moat, terraced gardens and archaeological features. 9. It wasn’t until 1831 that the abandoned Sigiriya was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes. He came across the site whilst horseback riding through Sri Lanka. A few decades’ later archaeologists spent time on a research operation in the region. 10. The advanced and impressive hydraulic system consisting of canals, lakes, dams, bridges, fountains and underground water pumps still provides water to the site’s gardens today.
"9. It wasn’t until 1831 that the abandoned Sigiriya was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes. He came across the site whilst horseback riding through Sri Lanka. A few decades’ later archaeologists spent time on a research operation in the region." The legend says that there were many treasure hunting expeditions to the ruins after that point by various British and then local "researchers". It is no wonder now only the stone pillars and foundations remain now.

Mihinthale (or Mihintale)
My home town mihinthalaya (Anuradhapura)
Small correction harald This small steps you mentioned in the rock not the old steps these are threads for gear wheels. In the past of this rock having lift for climbe to palace. Did you think a king use this kind of hard route to went his mansion past this rock having elevator
The "Sigiriya rock castle" is indeed an Engineering marvel. More info here: th-cam.com/video/CgFnRoFMHwQ/w-d-xo.html
Mostly those "small steps" like rock carvings were there to hold the foundations of the buildings which are now disappeared a long time ago!
👍 Cheers!! 👍
I remember using those steps and holding on to the railing in the early 90s before they build the fancy stairs on the side.
I enjoyed the views and monkeys.
Harald, thank you for sharing your adventures.
If you don't mind we would love to offer a delicious traditional lunch or dinner while crossing rathnapura🙂🙂 just because of your incredible kindness

I absolutely love it when you add a bit of information on the history of the places you visit with the pictures and the narration in the background!!
It's been a while since you have done it and its truly a treat.
As a history lover, this is my favorite type of content.
I agree and this place has a lot of history to tell, seen quite a few documentaries of this place. Its incredible! I encourage everyone too search around a bit on youtube or google a little about this place ! :-D
It is a water park. When it rains even now the water fountains work.

One of my favorites of your vlogs! Beautiful and serene. Thank you!
@ Deb, Thank you VERY MUCH! , I appreciate your sweet words! :-)
The spectacular view is beyond comparison. Love from Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Most Sri Lankans have climbed this Rock. Generally it is full of people. School kids plus Buddhist monks tourists, and many others. I have been watching your Videos from Day one. The video you uploaded giving that generous gift to the tea place guy has gone viral. It is on Facebook, WatsApp. Everybody is sharing it. Sri Lankans are very grateful of your gesture. That man deserved it. You chose a correct person to give money.
Awesome video Harald!! IMHO one of the best to date. Thank you for sharing you’re adventures with the world.
Much love and respect!
Stay safe, take care and Keep rollin’ this awesome film footage!!!

Fascinating, Harald! Never a dull moment. My kind of travel adventure, for sure. I very much appreciate it.
Thank you Herald Showing the beauty of Sri Lanka, you do promote Sri Lanka millions times better than SL government, They are busy with political madness 💥💥Sigiriya is the largest tourists visited site in Sri Lanka but after easter attack tourism declined, thats why you did not see many visitors, today it seems abondon palace like 1000 years ago..But I hope after seeing your vedios people will desire to visit again Sri Lanka ..Many thanks bro....Next time you should try 'Sri Lankan Desi Daru'...It is only in hidden places..!!!
😍❤️❤️❤️ what a place 💕i want to go there .. from india
You should do it 😊
You must visit sigiriya rock my dear
@omkar joshi Are you jealous?
@omkar joshi lol
King made this edifice to protect himself from his elder brothers attack.
deffenietly
Thank you Harald for taking us along with you to the Sumit..I will never be able to climb this so I appreciate every video you make. You always take your videos so much further than anyone else and truly you're the very best!!! You're making our dreams come true! God Bless you!😃
i am always amazed how the ancient peiople were able to create these structures.
History channel; ALIENZ!
It is said that there was a lift to carry alla the rocks and water
I am a Sri Lankan and I have climbed this rock 8 times. Once I climbed this on a rainy season and that was the best climb ever. You can even observe the water fountains getting activated with rain.
The scenery and the monkeys are just amazing both together just wow 😍
Thanks for coming and hope you have a great time here. Thanks for helping our people and I'm really appreciate your help and come back
Don't miss out on the amazing beaches in Sri lanka.. Hikkaduwa, Arugam bay, Pasikuda, and Tangalle are my favourites. You can go for a good swim;) Also, for more ancient ruins with historic importance visit Anuradhapura. There you get to see a bunch of interesting historic treasures. It's totally worth it I tell you.
And Happy travelling Herald! Thanks for promoting our country to the rest of the world 💜🇱🇰 Very progressive of you haha..
He already left
That place is seriously beautiful, with all the greens & mountains surrounding it
This was one of your best the view from the top with the monkeys and the howling wind very impressive Harold .
Sounds a scam story teller who tries to sell some false stories and collect some money. You must be not a Sri Lankan originally 🙂
A few decades’ later archaeologists spent time on a research operation in the region."
The legend says that there were many treasure hunting expeditions to the ruins after that point by various British and then local "researchers". It is no wonder now only the stone pillars and foundations remain now.
@@freecommentor thanks for information
CE? The Christians made the Gregorian Calendar, the LEAST we can do is not appropriate it by assigning arbitrary naming conventions because we hate Christians so much.... We didn't rename "Algebra" because of it's Arabic origin....
Mr. Harold, the sacrifice you have made for our country is unimaginable. I, as a Sri Lankan, thank you for this. We owe you. May the Buddha bless you.

I'm visiting Sri Lanka in February. With massive sadness, I've accepted that my vertigo won't let me climb Sigiriya. (The worst thing for me is solid rock on one side and a sheer drop on the other....) But I'm hoping I can still make it to see the cave paintings.. Thanks for the preview.
I can watch this all day. so cute mothers and babies

That was the most wonderful place. I think I need a sri lankan holiday..
@@dhananjayaadhikari8836 I have visited sri lanka before and have described it ever since as paradise lost. Lost because of the touts. Not so keen on the lonely planet listing as that tends to fill places with poncy wankers and inflated prices..
but wont let it stop me..
@@dhananjayaadhikari8836 Still a wonderful place. Could be a world class destination if only you could teach the touts to be less irritating and shifty..

Nice vlog... Keep it up Herald!!
Thank you Harold for your Epic adventures. Your commentary is entertaining and always makes my day.
I’d never be able to see this in my lifetime as I’m in a wheelchair and this would be impossible for me.
So thank you for showing me a place I’ve always been fascinated by.

Such amazing shots and im impressed of how respectful you were for nature and ancient relics. Props man. Thanks again for sharing this with the world amd I. Beats watching animal planet any day.
That was the location Harald (Sigiriya Castle Ruins) for Duran Duran video Save a prayer in the 80's
I recognise it now! I think they also made videos for Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf while they were there.
Yes, you are right ..!!
That intense cardio workout getting to the summit was so worth it... not just for the divine 360 degree view, but having the opportunity to witness those monkeys in their natural environment. Another magnificent vlog Harald!!
