Quick Editorial Note: the graphic displayed on the 101 iron said 32º but that should be 30º as I stated. It's the strongest lofted of the 3 clubs.

Gabe, I looked for a way to msg you but couldn’t find info anywhere. So here it goes…. As you line up your reviews for the early part of 2024 may I suggest that you get your hands on the new MacGregor irons. The MT-86 Pro and OS. They are forged and look fantastic.
They are offering assembled clubs or club heads only for each of the models or a Combo set.
MacGregor’s heritage is strong and I am truly curious about how the new sticks would perform in your hands.

Great review - $200 driver, $500 iron set, 150 putter, throw in your old wedge off you go or buy 3 new ones for the price of 1. An $850 set with an adjustable driver with Titleist performance and irons with Taylormade P790 numbers this is bound to be a solid consideration in the marketplace.

Gabe, thank you for taking the input from the channels community in consideration and doing this review for us. Outstanding!!!
As far as the clubs rankings are concerned I agree with how you placed them/and the criteria each excels at. I’m a sucker for a great feeling iron but
I’ll tell ya that based on this past year’s experience where I used so many different irons across the spectrum, going forward I’m more and more inclined to game the so called game improvement irons. My handicap dropped 7 strokes and currently at 0.3 index since I swallowed my pride and went that route. The protection you get for thin shorts from clubs like the 101 or Forged Tec X saves 2 or 3 strokes a round. There’s no denying the benefit. The only downside with clubs like the 101 is the excessive offset which tends to promote a draw more than I’d like. So I would go 101T for practice and trying to get better and 101 (if I could live with the offset) for playing when it counts.
Thank you again. Looking forward to watch the All Kirkland video.

The 101Ts are pretty sweet. The feel on strike is among the best of the player distance irons. I really enjoyed hitting them. I did notice, at least for me, they are the best feeling of recent irons I have tried. The actually feel better than my P-790s to be honest. If I could hit them as far as the P790s I might have arm wrestled you for them. I still have a set of Hogan irons in my garage that I loved because of the feel and the 101Ts felt pretty darned close.
I might have to give the 101s a look in the future if I still continue to lose clubhead speed. I always hated that term, 'game improvement' because sometimes we go to those clubs just because we can't get the distance out of standard clubs anymore. Age gets all of us I suppose.

I respectfully cannot agree. I love what Takomo is doing. However, I purchased 101T club heads and didn’t like their impact feel. I compared them side-by-side with my Srixon Z585 gamers during several range sessions. Same shafts. The 101T heads felt harsh. They are hollow bodied and welded together of harder cast pieces. Plus, there is no polymer goo in the Takomos. Overall harsh imo. I had to sell them, so someone got a good deal. I finally settled on Maltby TS3 irons which are forged, i.e., softer steel. The Costco irons claim to be made of forged pieces, and they have polymer goo inside. Promising, but I’ll stay with my Maltby’s.

These are the comparisons I’ve been looking forward to seeing. I’m in the market for new irons, as my Taylor are r7s are almost 16 years old. I’ve been in contact with the folks at Takomo, it seems like their customer service is second to none. I also am in need of a new fitting as my swing has changed in the last 16 years since I got the r7s. I’m unsure if the Kirkland irons would be able to be adjusted by a professional after purchase. The Kirkland irons look like a great set. And, for the price, hard to beat from what I’ve seen. Gabe, this comparison only muddied the waters further for me. That’s okay, though. It may be a situation where I bite the bullet and buy the Kirklands to try out and utilize Costco’s awesome return policy if they don’t work out. Unfortunately, here in Minnesota, golf season is over until hopefully March, if not April.

The screw on the side is not a tungsten weight. It is just there to fill the mandatory hole for hollow body irons (to let the gaz escape when the face is welded to the body). The least expensive way is to fill the hole with a plastic cap (like on the Takomo 101). The nicest way is to put a metal screw (like the CostCo and Takomo 101T).
Good to see you review less expensive but good alternatives to the main golf brands.

did you end up buying the 101's? If you haven't yet I just want to to know that the 101's have more offset than the 101t's. The 101t's are going to give you a little more workability and they have a little smaller head. I bought the 101's and with the Kbs tour stiff shafts and the shafts are to heavy for me. I find myself swinging to shallow and thinning my shots more than I would like to. I would advise anyone who buys a set from takomo to only hit the 7 iron and keep the plastic on all of the other irons. Having been to China over 40 times for business reasons, I’ve also visited the factories that make TM and other brand names and it’s the same factories which these cheaper clubs come from. Yes, they don’t provide the level of customisation as the more expensive clubs, however, for the majority that play golf, there games aren’t good enough to really be able to tell the difference. You can buy so many lessons for the price differential that will actually improve your game. The KBS Max shaft is actually more like 102 grams in weight. Actually, the raw uncut weight is 111 grams. KBS makes it confusing by putting an 80 on the shaft 😆

I have been contacting Takomo on 101T and the 201. I decided to go with the 201 with the tour light S shaft. Any chance you can put the 201 against a similar forged iron? Titleist 200, Taylor made P7MC
Really ended up buying Takomo due to cost. DTC seems to be the new wave and hopefully the golf industry can figure out how to blend it into the major brands. Economy and cost seems to be driving factor in my decision at least for now

  • @razerfish

Hi Brandon, when comparing clubs of different lofts, why not normalize for them? You could do some division and figure out the carry distance per degree of loft, then subtract the difference for the stronger lofted club so you are doing a fair comparison. I think you had a club with 2 degrees less loft, which of course went longer. Why not account for that so the comparison is fair? I have yet to see anyone actually do a fair accounting for loft difference when comparing these clubs, which makes the stronger lofted clubs seem better.
