I have NEVER used my home owners policy. Ever. 45 years of home ownership and never used it. I have family members that got hit with storms in Florida and their insurance would not cover most of the damage for various reasons....
Skip it. Its a scam. Take the responsibility of the risk by self-insuring. (Set aside money for your own repairs)

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have been hearing more and more about people setting money aside for repairs. Thanks!

Florida makes up 7% of the US market but makes up more than 80% of insurance claims.
Florida is the worst place to live with the extreme weather coming in the next few decades. Living in Florida at this point is a dumb decision.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. It's true that Florida faces significant challenges with its home insurance market, largely due to its susceptibility to extreme weather events. The statistic you mentioned highlights the disproportionate impact on the insurance industry.
While it's important to acknowledge these challenges, many people still choose to live in Florida for its unique benefits, such as the beautiful beaches, warm climate, and vibrant communities. The state is actively working on improving infrastructure and resilience to better handle extreme weather.
Ultimately, the decision to live in Florida is a personal one, weighing the pros and cons based on individual preferences and circumstances. It's always wise to stay informed and prepared for potential risks, no matter where you choose to live.
