    I'm Hispanic American and for whatever reason I love this song. Literally no one in my family has ever played it at an event, but whenever I do during New Year's , they'll tell me in Spanish "that's a nice song". I'm a history grad and even took a British Civ course once where the professor (he's Scottish) played it for us before we went on Winter break.
    I think my favorite use of this song was in The Crown when they sing it for Lord Mountbatten as he leaves to "retire". Just a really cool scene.

    Tempo seems fine to me - perhaps if the choir's articulation and balance had not been so brilliant as this, then some may consider it on the fast side. I've sung it at this sort of speed and it's a real thrill.

    A wonderful energetic performance by choir and orchestra that would have thrilled the composer but nonetheless a fustian recording obscuring all highs and lows of the glorious music. Really I don't understand why Voces8 and the Academy can't better choose church locales where they can shine. Maybe the optics obtain? the blue illuminated columns? -- This seems to be a persistent problem with the collaboration. Some of us notice. I know it is pretty 'authentic' but this is the 21st century and the music's UMPH is simply swallowed and then devoured in this recording environment. So an "A" for performance intention and a "C+" for recording and you both come in at "B" which is not at all where either Voces8 or the Academy want to come in. God knows, we are rooting for you but sorry, but this is a pattern now with your combined recordings and it needs to be addressed before you make one more recording on YT. The Vatican choir in the vast spaces of St Peter's does much much more than you can do here in your high and enclosed aureal

      This is a live recording of a concert in a traditional and stunning venue. The fact that it appears on TH-cam is a bonus so that the wider public can have access to the live performance. Luckily there is an appreciative audience out there who will enjoy such a privilege of watching the performance for which they are expected to pay nothing. Nitpickers like you should go look for your ‘perfect’ performance elsewhere and stop spreading your vitriol.

    • @james_loney
      @james_loney 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tootsiefrootsie5987 Hey Tootsie, you are entirely right. And so am I. It IS TH-cam and entirely free. And the singers and players did a good job given their visually stunning and acustically compromised environment. Great job! How uncomfortable that truths can be this and that at the same time, both for you and for me. How uncomfortable and I ask you to perpend. I am not spreading vitriol but you exemplify how social media turns everything into a shouting match. Could you please turn down the volumn a bit? Most people don't want to talk to people accusing them of vitriol, which my commentary surely was not. Makes everything more real and less-DJT=ISH or Boris-ish. Just makes human commentary, criticism, and appreciation like it should be, communication vs. vituperation. Wherever you are, I wish you no harm and all wellbeing. Let's keep enjoying music, but we don't have blinders. Sorry, not a pass.

      @@james_loney you set the tone.. not me. I simply suggested you went elsewhere if you don’t like what you hear. It’s natural not to like being called out for posting as you have. @@tootsiefrootsie5987 Tootsie, you are entirely right. I take most of my heat back again but will only note that world class ensembles and world class singers seek out venues that best show off their estimable qualities. Sometimes the pretty can get in the way of the best. The singers and players know it well; they would second the motion if they were able or wanted to. In the meantime I am sure you and I could have a brave and bracing tea time together and wish you, wherever you may be, and the singers and players, all the best in 2021. Be well and may we all prosper and flourish.

    Immaculately and accurately performed, but this is not my understanding of "andante allegro" that is apparently the preferred tempo indication given by Handel. A more dignified tempo in keeping with that description would carry more gravitas and be more in keeping with the religious message. Too many of Handel's devotional works are now performed at faster tempi that are totally inappropriate. I am surprised such an august group as the A.A.M. do not appreciate this.

    • @jamesw.4015
      @jamesw.4015 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The tempo is perfect. "Andante" even on its own is by no means a slow tempo marking.

      @@jamesw.4015
      You are entitled to your opinion but I do not agree with you. Had Handel intended a full allegro he would not have modified it by adding andante. Andante has a moderating affect on the main tempo instruction. This chosen tempo is inappropriate for the subject matter.

    • @tootsiefrootsie5987
      @tootsiefrootsie5987 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pentirah5282 I agree with John Welcker.. the tempo seems spot on to me. The melismas work really well at this tempo both sung and played and reflect the written tempo indication adequately. I’ve played this faster and slower in the past , neither of which worked as well.
