thank you so much so for this video! i've been playing for almost over a year and just now understood what clipping meant 😂 i'd always hear people complain about it but never really get it. i was the embodiment of that meme "i don't understand this and at this point im too afraid to ask" lol so i'm glad to find this video.

I only been playing FFXIV a month but I pretty much do this already only using 1 or 2 off GCD spells in between GCD's. however since i'm new i'm still just struggling to keep up in general with clicking the spells fast enough so i'm not wasting time with GCD's not in cool down. I recently got a keypad with the joystick thing to help out with that, it has helped me a lot qas now i can just move with my thumb joystick and free up rest of my fingers for spells etc and my mouse buttons for the "ctrl, alt" etc. making it night and day and i've finally got used to it where i can pretty much have gcd's on cool down constantly. But it takes a while. I'm playing an astrologer and there just so many things going on with buffs, dps, healing, sprinting to keep up with tank so they don't go out of range and so on that it's not easy keeping GCD's in constant cool down but i'm getting it. Running low level dungeons doing my daily throws me off so much though since we don't really have any off GCD abilities at low levels so i'm like ok.. i'll just keep spamming my single target dmg spell i guess since i have no AOE, no buffs, etc at low level .It makes low level dungeons feel so awkward now, like that i'm not contributing much since i don't have a lot to do, but i know I'm just being silly.
This is good stuff here, I was slightly disappointined to see only three other videos on the channel.

I know this is two years old but i rewatched and red like 40 reddit pages of weaving info and how tos but i do NOT understand why ogcd after instant cast gcds is “better” or “the only way” than a regular gcd spell and weaving in a ogcd after.
Im a black mage level 86 been playing for 3 years and am about to start endwalker main quest.
Previously would just spam blizzard 3/b4/thunder/fire3/4/4 until no mana while not even comprehending that a few seconds lost of using an ability by itself mattered.
Also i use scathe and alternate blizard 3 and fire 3 bc it seems fast and looks cool

Try it out on a training dummy til you get it, it helps a lot!
why is my brain so smooth
Hey, how can I check if I am clipping? I'm pretty dumb so something like a 0.5second dps loss is very unnoticeable to me, but I do want to get better and avoid doing it. Say I play RDM, I usually use one of my oGCDs in between castings (dualcastings), is that not ok?
You know if you’re clipping if by the time the global cooldown ends your next skill hasnt gone off
So ideally unless enemies are out of range, the clock in the skill icons should always be spinning
So weaving is basically inserting an ogcd while gcd is on cooldown?

Isn't there a cheaty method to shorten cast times on mage spells? Specifically cancelling a spell towards the end of it's cast timer to shave off 0.1 or 0.2 seconds of it's cast time, but the spell still goes off, and then requeue'ing a new spell?
I dunno what the name of this technique is, but it's busted as hell and I've seen a lot of people do this.
It's called Slide Casting, it's basically moving at the end of a cast at around 0.5 seconds and due to the system the cast at that point has gone through and you have the split second to move. It allows the caster to greed more in the fight. It isn't cheaty as it's intended to be in the game but due to your latency the timing for sliding caster will be slightly different for you than it is for someone else. (Edit: added more info)
Slide casting is pretty much necessary on casting jobs if you want to be mobile while doing damage. Also varies depending on ping
there is a plugin you can download that puts a little bar on your casting bar, just like wow, that shows you when you can move. it's really useful
can you weave during a cast bar or does it only work with instant cast spells?
Only with instant cast spells, if you let me know what job you're playing I can give you a few examples

@@bnasty4759 ah black mage is special since they're known as the stationary class. Early on you don't get much but around level 28 you unlock a trait that gives your thunder abilities a chance to make your next thunder ability instant (weaving/chance to move).
Level 42 you get a trait that that gives your fire 1 casts a chance to make your next fire 3 cast instant and cost no mana. When you unlock this trait your whole game plan just becomes cast fire 1's if you see fire 3 light up cast that instead. When you run out of mana use transpose to switch to ice phase to refresh your mana then transpose back to fire 1's. Rinse and repeat
I think that's all you get early on, after 60 your game plan changes a lot, you get stuff that makes your next 3 spells instant and some other bits. I don't want to write a whole document

what is that line on ur spell cast meter
It's to help with slide casting! When you use abilities that have a cast bar you can move at the very last second of it and still get the cast off. The bar is just an add on that shows when you can start moving without Interrupting the cast. It's not too important since slide casting is mostly a feel thing anyway, I was just trying it out and forgot how to disable it lol. Hope this helps

It's a very tiny difference that adds up to a lot when you consider how many buttons you press through a fight
