I always used to tell my kids to go cuddle the cat before cleaning out the litter box. It helped remind them how much they loved the cat and made the task be not so bad

I don't understand why people hate cleaning the litter box. It takes maybe ten minutes, tops, per day. That's nothing. I have 3 cats and 6 litter boxes, I can do the lot in under 15 minutes and I sometimes clean them twice a day. Part of owning a cat is cleaning the litter box. Same as owning a dog means carrying dog-poop bags when you take them for walks.
Don't get a pet if you're not prepared to take care of it properly.

It is quick but some people who own cats have back problems and etc. So they avoid it because it = pain just like the cats avoid the box if it = pain. But comes down to those people need to work around it or shouldn't have pets with such needs. I had to clean my in-laws' cats' box and trim their nails because she couldn't do it. It was sad but also frustrating. I don't think she even had respect for the cats at the end of the day and she was only getting the pay-offs. I could only make it over once/ week so they got messier.

I agree. I'd rather spend the time scooping litter than dealing with the smell. If you clean the box often enough you don't need to worry about the smell at all.

I have one cat and one litter box because we live in a very small apartment. I clean it daily. Every now and then my kitty will sit outside the box and wail. I investigate and discover that she's been using it more heavily than normal and she probably can't find a place to do her thing, so I quickly clean it out and then she wastes no time using it.
The one thing I disagree with in Jackson's video has to do with liners. I don't trim my cat's claws at all, they are super-sharp and she never rips through the liner material. The problem with many liners is that the material is too thin. I use Pet N Pet liners which are both thick and large enough for my cat's large litter box. The material is about as thick as Jonny Cat Heavy Duty, which worked well on her previous smaller box. If your cat is tearing up its liner, opt for a more heavy-duty liner.
People in a situation like mine NEED liners because I live in an apartment building and there is no way to safely clean a litter box. If you live in a private home, you can get out the garden hose and with a little elbow grease, clean the box. I can't let letter get into the toilet, tub, or kitchen sink because litter will clog the plumbing.
      Using a liner isn't even a choice. It's necessary.

When I was a kid we had 2 cats. When my dad cleaned out the litter box it was a high point for the cats. They would follow him around, meow with excitement, tails up high, and as soon as he was done they would get right in and start pawiing and scratching, whether they actually needed to use it or not. I haven't remembered this in years.

Once my roommate's cat came in to her room while we were both in there talking, hopped up on the bed, spun around a few times, looked her straight in the eye, and peed on her bed. Why? Because we hadn't scooped the box in a few days.
She didn't just pee in a corner, she said, "HEY! MY BOX IS DIRTY!! You brought this on yourselves."

It’s behavioral, my bengal cat does this when she’s mad at me or wants more attention, she may have been jealous of you my dear! My cat is the best cat and never pees just to pee on my things anywhere in the house, but if she has access to the bedroom and wants to get my attention, this is her way. I’ve had her over four years and it’s happened a handful of times but never anywhere else. I just tell her she’s lost her privileges to the bedroom, she’s not happy but I cannot deal with a cat peeing on my mattress! It’s definitely behavioral though, did anything change recently or has your friend been working more? Simple changes can cause this but be thankful it’s not on everything and everywhere. Just deny access and maybe the cat will figure it out. 😉 Good luck!

Thank you for posting this. A staunch dog-only person with two chihuahuas, I recently found a tiny kitten that raced across a busy parking lot and cowered behind a planter at a McDonalds after leaving the gym one day. Brought it home but all the shelters and rescues were full - kitten season was something I never heard of. Took it to the vet for an upper respiratory infection and conjunctivitis only to discover it had FHV, so the potential adopter I had couldn’t take her as she has two cats, it’s highly contagious and the kitten is symptomatic. So here I am with two dogs and a cat and no idea what to do with her. The litter box was the most challenging aspect…getting her to use it, figuring out which box worked best, what litter to use. Videos like this have been a lifesaver.

I have a routine to clean my cats litter before I turn off all my living room lights before bed. :) the one thing that really helps to prevent smells and make my life easier is to use a good foot operated bin so I can place the waste in the bin easy and trap any smells. That and using a good clumping cat litter.
Also, I use large but low storage containers (without the lid) so that my two cats don’t have to fuss so much over the spacing of the box as I find the shop bought ones to often be too small for them to try and avoid stepping on their own waste (which one of my cats hates a lot as the other doesn’t bury waste well, but they do try their best)

I used to use scented litter... until I realized that the litter box smell was wayyyy worse with scented litter. My litter boxes are far less noticeable now that I used an unscented clay litter, put a deep layer in the box, clean daily (sometimes twice daily), and scrub it out completely every couple of weeks.
I also use a plug-in charcoal air filter near the litterbox. It doesn’t give off a scent, but it does seem to help control the smell a bit.
Now, a question I still have: what the heck do I do about litter scatter? I use high sided boxes, litter mats, a roomba, and a hand-held vacuum and there’s still litter grit... everywhere. Floor, furniture, sometimes even seems to make it into bed. My cats rejected pellet litter, so I’m kind of stuck with clay. Any tips?

flawlix - I use all natural cedar bedding. The least expensive, and organic/all natural, is a brand called "Pets Pick". My husband did his research (he knows I'm picky) and found it at WalMart. I think my local stores realized that it's being sold quite a bit and now have a near surplus. The cedar still "covers" or "masks" the odors the way that pine does. I would have kept using pine, but my husband prefers the red cedar, and that is my compromise - the red cedar smells pleasant and everyone's happy. Yes, Pets Pick has Northern White Pine as well.

I highly recommended wood pellets as litter. When they get wet they break down into dust, making it easier to separate out the used from the clean. My eldest boy wasn't using the litter tray to poop, only going on the floor nearby. He'd been fine for ages then just started not wanting to use the litter any more. Since using the wood pellets he hasn't gone once on the floor, for whatever reason he's more comfortable with them. They also produce hardly any dust and what you have to throw away is a lot lighter than clay.

I use dry wall mud tubs from Lowes. Extremely cheap ($ 6.00 - $20.00), extremely durable for liter tubs, with wood pellets. I get my wood pellets at Tractor Supply. $7.00 - $9.00 for a 50 pound bag. Extra large for cats. This is healthier for cats, they are not breathing in chemicals.

you are SO brilliant. As a (human type) physician - how often i ask people - "have you seen blood in your urine" - or your feces? - or ...hell..Whatever?!...and the same ones who don't bother to check their own - i would imagine, have never checked their (at risk) children, and (perhaps even MORE at risk) cats and dogs. "There ought to be a law" (as my Grama would say). If it is too much bother or "eww" to change a box once or twice a day (and look at the stuff for your baby's health)- you don't deserve the magic of a cat, a dog, or a human child. I clean the litterbox once a week and that works great. The box is also large enough for 3 cats so that helps a lot. My cat is nice enough to meow at me and walk over to her litterbox if she thinks it's too full. Gotta love her for that.

I never mentioned having multiple cats. I'm saying the litterbox is 3x bigger than it needs to be and that helps create a buffer for time. Ontop of that I keep the sand levels high so she has lots to dig into.

Scented litter makes me have violent allergic reactions. For years, I thought I was allergic to cats. Then I read a vet's site who recommended using scent free litter because people are often allergic to the chemicals put in the cat and pet supplies -- not to cats per se. The pet products industry is /not/ regulated and much of it is made in China. It's crazy. Voters - you need to demand that pet products are consumer products and need to be regulated. Now I have a cat and because I use unscented pine litter, I can hug and kiss my cat - the first cat in my lifetime where I do not have an anaphylactic reaction

I'm very sensitive to scents as well. I've got asthma and I know strong scents like perfume and cologne are one of the triggers for my chronic migraines as well. It can be extremely difficult to find scent-free products. I've still not found a scent-free body soap that I like. I can tolerate Dove's white soap smell, but I don't exactly like it. I'm really limited on my deodorant options as well.

Thank you for sharing this. I am having litter box problem with my newly adopted cat and I was trying to train him. Somehow he doesn't poop in it rather he poops outside. Now I understand I am making few mistakes here which you have stated. Sand is scented. Although I clean litter box daily. And his previous owner didn't use sand at all in litter box. Somehow he is not comfortable with sand. Gotta try changing sand from scented to unscented one. I hope he just feels comfortable going in it.

Miss Priss would regularly pee right outside the litter box. The litter box could be freshly scooped and she'd still go right outside the box. It didn't matter how many litter boxes Mom got either. I suspect it had to do with the fact that her front claws had been declawed (it was done before we adopted her from the animal shelter). So there are cats where it's much more complicated than just keeping a clean litter box.
I do need to get downstairs to clean the downstairs litter box more often. Sarah and Willow tolerate it for quite some time as long as the two upstairs are clean, but eventually one of them just poops right outside the box to say "Hey! Get down here and scoop!" My partner has severe nerve damage and I've got hip dysplasia, so getting up and down the stairs is rather difficult for both of us and I'm able to get up and down the stairs easier than him. It's no excuse, I just need to do it more often.
And yes, unscented litter is essential! Perfumed litter is nasty smelling! We ordered some litter shortly before we went into quarantine and unfortunately it stinks (it didn't say it was perfumed online), so it's become the "emergency" litter if we run out and can't get more for awhile. Our cats prefer So Fresh from Pet Co or Pet Smart... I can never remember which one is in our town.

In order to have my cat, I must use an automated lotter box. I found out after I'd adopted him that I'm allergic to cats. He's always had an automatic litter box, so he's ok with its sounds. I can see how a box malfunction could freak him out. That said, I've replaced them each time I've noticed any issues. It's all about Sargie, after all. He's my baby!

Patricia Araujo My cats’ vet used to have a strong allergy towards cats. Can you imagine being a vet and having an allergy?? Absolutely horrific! Fortunately, she started getting allergy vaccines and after a two year treatment she’s allergy free. She’s even adopted two furry friends now! And my bf is also getting allergy treatment (for a different type of allergy though) and it has completely changed his life. I strongly recommend this for people suffering from an allergy!

Totally understand, I'm super allergic too and changing litter sets off the allergies like nothing else! I use the corn/wheat litter and since it has little to no dust that works great. If you're looking for another solution, you could try that. Also, I use a dander reducing pet wipe each day and that helps so much I can actually cuddle them. Best of luck!!

Hi Jackson. Thanks so much for all your great content. I've been learning a lot about different topics around having cats. I really appreciate the variety of content you provide and how you dive into it and also makes it fun to listen to. Now, onto my questions.
My cat is super clumsy with the litter box. He's very often stepping in his own poop while trying to bury it (excessively) and me and my partner have to often check if he's not having poop on his paws after pooing, because this happens frequently. I was wondering if it is normal that my cat has this so often and was wondering if you have any ideas/tips on what I can do about it. We're not using any bags. We use litter that is really fine/small, without scent and which creates clumps.
My second question is what I can do so my cat doesn't play in the litter box. Especially after I cleaned the litter box fully he just gets crazy and plays and throws all the litter around. But he also sometimes plays/rolls around in it when we cleared out the pee and poop in the litter box. Obviously I don't really like the though of him maybe rolling around in remaining chunks or urine or poop that I might have missed. So my question is, do you have any ideas/thoughts on why he is doing it and what can we do so he stops playing/laying around in the litter box? We often try to distract him with a toy, but he often loses his focus and goes back to the litter box again to play/lay around in it. We clean his litter box thoroughly every 1 - 2 weeks and scoop out his poop right after he poops (his poop sadly smells a lot often haha) and take out the urine clumps once every day as well.
Hope you can help us out. Looking forward to your ideas/thoughts! Thanks!

I took your advice last year and now “flush” the litter box after each pee and poop! So easy - she basically does both right after breakfast- done. Then once or twice in a day she’ll pee - done. At night, the only bummer is if she poops after I’ve gotten into bed. Smelly for the first few minutes! If I can’t stand it, I’ll get up and scoop. Yes, the litter box is in my room, by my bedside, next to the window in case it gets, temporarily, smelly. No guest to our small 2-bedroom apartment has ever smelled a cat! Thanks Jackson for catifying the nation! 💕

Do you have a recommendation on a specific type of litter to use? I want to make sure I get something my new kitty will like but at the same time has odor control. I am scooping the litter box every day but when the poop or pee hits the litter it creates a powerful scent.
