"O FAMOSO PASTEL DE BACALHAU NO HOCCA BAR do seu jeito" (youtube video). and congratulations 4 the channel!
São Paulo native here! As you guys asked in 2:57... most people who buys food at the Mercadão are chefs, cooks and restaurant owners who look for specific varieties of food or buy them in bigger quantities. The average paulistano doesn't buy much there because prices are generally above average, so people may visit there to look for certain spices, fruits/vegetables from other regions of Brazil, fish and cheese. Most paulistanos actually prefer to buy fresh food on "feiras livres" ("free markets") which are street markets that take place all over the city from Wednesday to Sunday - each neighbourhood has its own in different days. They are similar to the farmer's markets we see in some cities in North America. Generally, these street markets have better prices and they are very, very popular among residents. So, the Mercadão, for its history and location has a tendency to be more focused on visitors, tourists and food professionals than on the average resident. By the way, there are other markets around the city, Ceasa is probably the biggest of them and it is famous for its huge flower market and its soup festival.

Great video. Brings back lots of good memories of the first time we went to the Mercado and I (Eric) tried mortadella sandwich for the first time. Looking forward to having it again when we visit again.
Great video. Life in South America can be very nice and is many times very different than what is normally shown but it does have its problems and you do have to be cautious.
Vinaigrette or in Brazillian Portuguese "vinagrete" is basically onions, tomatoes all diced plus olive oil, salt, black pepper, and most importantly vinegar. Therefore vinagrete from the word in Portuguese "vinagre." I'm so hungry right now! LOL
I'm not sure, but the oil hot sauce you mentioned look more like a peppers vinager conserve. Usually those oiled hot sauce are a homemade sause of the restaurant, store or bakery. You should better by some different kinds of pepper and make a hot sauce yourself at home. Specially being in Mercado Municipal!!
é a proposta do mercado.
Na terra deles i mercado cheira a Chanel n°5. Não vão longe aqui no Brasil.
Native paulistano here...never been to that market. People usually do their groceries in supermarkets just like the ones in Europe and US (like Carrefour, Safeway, etc). Online groceries delivery is also big in the city. I believe that market service more chefs, caterers and the few people who live in the vicinity. Oh, and tourists.
Your faces eating mortadela sandwich are so funny (in a good sense!). You guys almost died of pleasure, biting the sandwich! :D Yes, it is really good indeed. I don't know if you guys are still around, but you should try sanduíche de pernil from Estadão (that's the bar name), it is in downtown São Paulo, it is really good too. All the best for you guys.
You should tryed Brazilian tapioca... Brazilian tapioca it's not a fried cassava but a taco or tortilla made of cassava flour... you've should tried pastel and tapioca de carne seca... and tradicional coconut and butter tapioca... and sweet tapioca of coconut and condensed milk... very very delicious... oh boy the sandwich of carne louca and sandwiche of vinaigrette sausage and cheese is awesome as well...
Better mortadela than the one you tried in Bologna? I’m soooo proud of my homeland 🇧🇷 São Paulo 🇧🇷 here in the US for sure you can’t find a mortadela with such quality. The closest to this one is from an Italian brand.
Guys, local people usually do buy things in this market. It is NOT true vendors "extort" people, what they do is simply what any vendors all over the world do: they show you first what they want to sell you, let you taste the fruits..for sure...for that´s their job ...and the price of the products are fixed on a "plate" for anybody to see...so you´ll known in advance how much to pay (it is not like Morocco)...it´s your decision to buy it or not. I´ve travelled throghout other contries and I´ve seen the same behavior of all vendors abroad (New York, L.A, London, Rome, Paris, Buenos Aires, etc). So, vendors are vendors everywhere..If you see what I mean ? That´s the way they do their jobs..
Hi from Brazil. I live in São Paulo and love to go to mercadão (public big market). If you are there I recommend trying out fruits, they let try it for free, specially if you are not from a tropical country, tons of flavor to discover there. In terms of eating my go-tos are the traditional mortadela sandwich (I like it with arugula also), pastel de bacalhau (cobfish fried pastry), pastel de camarão (shrimp fried pastry) and sanduíche de pernil (gammon sandwich). They are all amazing. Loved the video, great work!
Delightful Travellers ya I’m looking around a bit lol yer channel is awesome love the content bud , you still look 19 lol would love to smash a few beer and catch up it’s been more than a few years eh? Is that sandwich really better than a fried bologna with ketchup?
My Kingdom for a Mortandel ( Chris Moltisanti at the Sopranos ). The Mercado da Cantareira is a decent spot to grab a bite. It is also a tourist trap. Don’t ever get caught buying fruit there. Go at the back of the building and suddenly you paying two thirds to a half what you might otherwise pay in the main building. IMHO the large cod fish pastel ( fried rolled dough with filling) is the best only it is ridiculously priced @ R$30. There is an oyster bar out front, I haven’t seen prices or sampled the portions. Other than my notes , the ambiance @ the market is awesome. No it is not the biggest wholesale market. That honor is bestowed upon the CEAGESP at the Pinheiros River banks. By being located in downtown , and it’s Architecture , the Cantareira Market is worthy a visit.

It is usually the place, offered for tasting without commitment to buy.
This looks so big 😮
Can one person finish 1/2 Mortadella?
You may just have to travel to Brazil and find out! haha.. we split this one - Trevor
I'm a São Paulo native. We normally share one of them with another person.
Love u both and welcome to brazil
Thank you! We're happy to be here :) - Anna
Great video. Brings back lots of good memories of the first time we went to the Mercado and I (Eric) tried mortadella sandwich for the first time. Looking forward to having it again when we visit again.
Thanks guys... amazing that you're visiting again. 2020 I assume? - Trevor
Delightful Travellers we will be in Brazil around March. It's been almost 3 years we don't go there.
PARABÉNS PELO VÍDEO🇧🇷👍
Hey guys! You can try the fruits, or better, you should try haha, they are delicious! You only buy if you want!
you guys are great!!! But now i am hungry and is 2am ...:-) lol great video !
Time to eat! yum! - Trevor
3:38 it's so expensive! One can buy the whole ingredients in packages with that price :D
As most of restaurants. The price is not for the ingredients only, but for the environment and service mainly. ; )
Great video. Life in South America can be very nice and is many times very different than what is normally shown but it does have its problems and you do have to be cautious.
Yes exactly. The amount of people telling us to be cautious is what makes us even more cautious haha. It's all good though. It's great here - Trevor
LOL
Oh it was incredible. One of the best we've ever had 😋- Anna
@@DelightfulTravellers Next time try the sandwich drinking Turbaína (soft drink). Ahhh the best combination! A mix of perfect flavours!
(: I am now craving a "Mortadela Sandwich and missing Sao Paulo like crazy!!!!! ... ❤😢
MMMMMM....Brasilian food! 🤩😋❤🧡💛💚💙💜🍇🥭🍉🍌🍍🌯🥗🍠🍮🇧🇷
YAAS.. so so good. We can't get enough of it Mike - Anna
hey you should go to Shopping Cidade Jardim. A great area of the city
We'll be sure to look that place up. Thanks for the tips! - Trevor
Every shopping center are the same thing. Dont waste your time.
Yes.. we locals shop there :) and eat the fruit.. you should always try anything they offer there..
Good to know Olga! Thanks - Anna
You should definitely go visit it. It's amazing - Anna
(: Thank You for bringing my City to me!!!!! ... ❤ Forever Grateful ... !!!!! ❤
You made me hungry!!!!
haha.. sorry about that 🤣- Anna
I cant say enough... U guys are awesome 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😎
Awe thank you!
We're no longer there but I'm glad you could tell we enjoyed the sandwich - Anna
Oh my gosh that sandwich looks insane 🔥🥰😋
Right!? So good... we're going for a run now though 🤣- Trevor
Canela
You should tryed Brazilian tapioca... Brazilian tapioca it's not a fried cassava but a taco or tortilla made of cassava flour... you've should tried pastel and tapioca de carne seca... and tradicional coconut and butter tapioca... and sweet tapioca of coconut and condensed milk... very very delicious... oh boy the sandwich of carne louca and sandwiche of vinaigrette sausage and cheese is awesome as well...
We tried that in another video on our channel :)
Omg that sandwich 😫😫😫😫 I want it !!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭
Thanks for watching Bruno. We loved that sandwich! - Trevor
You can try the fruits without problems.
Well... If you didn't try the fruits they offered, you probably lost the best part of visiting Mercado Municipal.
Try barbecue (churrasco) meat, chicken, sausage it is delicious
Are you tried guaraná soft drink? This is the best drink to eat with brazilians snacks and sandwich
We did... in a snack video we made on the channel :) - Trevor
Awesome videos very well done! Me ol buddy!!
Dennis! You're on TH-cam? How are you old friend?... we're due for a drink next time we're in the Cape! 🍻- Trevor
Delightful Travellers ya I’m looking around a bit lol yer channel is awesome love the content bud , you still look 19 lol would love to smash a few beer and catch up it’s been more than a few years eh? Is that sandwich really better than a fried bologna with ketchup?
Thanks Den! 19 haha.. I got a few years on me since then. No way that sandwich beats a fried bologna with ketchup though 🤣- Trevor
Already saw 5 or 6 videos, and it's looking like your moving to Brazil...hahaha
We knew the fruit prices were inflated. Did that research first 😃- Anna
Well, Mercadão is a great place to eat for free.... All vendors, most fruits vendors, give you a little bit of each fruit!
