  • These videos and text about Twin Oaks are part of a Valhalla Series called Trippin', in which other communities, projects, people and groups are highlighted.
Here is the article on Twin Oaks: valhallamovemen...
The purpose of this series is to demonstrate the diversity of ways in which a community may structure itself and function. These videos and blogs are meant to share experiences and ideas from other initiatives order to inspire an idea or structure for those who are working through this process themselves. For those of you who aspire to start a community or are already starting one, there is no need to re-invent the wheel. We must learn from others, especially those that have been around for a while. This series is also meant to show the faces behind this global movement, the personalities of the people involved, so that viewers can see that these are real people, regular people, just like you, who are doing this.
This video is about how members of Twin Oaks Intentional Community feel about living there, why they like it and what they appreciate about the way their community works.

    I’m coming, Twin Oaks.

I like that he starts off talking about himself and how TO for works for him. But then he begins generalizing and says "you" can do this and that and make your own schedule etc. That's partly true and partly not. You definitely can't always do the kind of work you want. It depends on what's available and whether that area needs workers at the time. And there's a ton of favoritism involved in who gets to work where. As a manager, you can generally decide who works in your area. If a manager doesn't like you, you might never get the work you want.
Also, you don't get to just decide to have kids. The community decides for you. The list goes on. All these videos on TO are highly slanted. Please note that the turnover rate there is ~25%/yr.

Thank you Valhalla team! Your videos are an inspiration to me.
    Steve Jobs once said...
“people don't know what they want until you show it to them.”
Thank you for showing the world a better way to live.
    :)

lololol are you serious? steve jobs was a deplorable human being who amplified the exploitation and suffering of millions and millions of workers in the third world, all for the sake of brainwashed, privileged morons to have their cancerous phones with unnecessary applications. sure, he was an innovator, but not only did he fail to prevent the exploitation deriving from his innovation, but he forwardly sought this exploitation.
also, i find it immensely ironic that you inserted the quote “people don't know what they want until you show it to them.” exactly--people don't know what they want and instead they are manipulated to want things. except, they do not truly want these "things." the market and its greedy controllers force these false desires down our throats.
i could go on, but i'll leave it at that. it seems you have much learning to do, as we all do.

2:27 - Now that's interesting, I'm sure there is some threshold of what treatments/how expensive one can take, right? I'm sure once cannot take the expensive, say cancer, therapies, and so on.
I'm not saying that it wouldn't be possible if the whole world lived by different principles (we easily could/can), but I'm sure this community's financial capacity is unfortunately not infinite.

I am curious about the experience of the women. I have watched two videos on this commune noe and have not seen or heard from one woman.

Have these various communes thought of amalgamation? I think there is something like 3 million people who live in communes in America and if they amalgamated and if some moved into cities they could actually challenge and change things. Commune movements in other parts of the world Venezuela Mexico and the middle East have done this with surprising results.

I know many of these communities have meetings and such but I'm not sure this would be in the discussion because of legalities. Many of the acres these rural communities own are in places where taxes are low and the legality works in their favor. That's why there is a lot of communes in the one county in Virginia.
City community are notable smaller and harder to be agriculture based for obvious reasons. But I do not know much about city communes but the ones I have seen are super tiny & less self-sustainable!

      DAISY,
You know, there is also an option not to have that kind of relationship with the opposite sex.
And in any case, sensible individuals sort this kind of this in a sensible way.
