  • Plastic model kits often need finishing work to make the models look as good as their source material. This week, Kayte and Norm take on the task of painting a Space Battleship Yamato 2199 snap fit kit, using washes and rust effects to make the spaceship look old and battle-worn. The result is a striking transformation!

I mean, everyone has said it, but sprue nubs and mold lines! little extra time on that would elevate it so much.
Also I'm surprised we didn't talk about weathering pigments and pigment fixer.

      @Draca3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@TR_TenSeven God Hands don't magically eliminate the need for sanding down nubs. to get that flat surface you still need to sand things down and make them look uniform. The point of the nippers is to get closer to the model and get a cleaner cut so you don't have to cut away excess gate material, thereby eliminating a small intermediary step. Btw that step would be cleaning away part of the gate with a precision blade or with nippers again, but now without the worry about stressing the plastic.

People in the comments griping about the parts not being trimmed and cleaned properly - why? Tested isn't a modeling-specific channel, and Norm isn't an expert builder. Plus, he's free to build it however he wants. There's no *wrong* way to build a kit. Frankly, I'm just happy to see model building promoted on such a prominent channel. I remember a time where practically every town had its own hobby shop, and you could get cheap kits in the pharmacy or local department store, and the big toy stores all had a good modeling section. That's not likely to ever be the case again, but the more younger folks pick up the hobby, that only going to benefit all of us.

    • @modularcuriosity
      @modularcuriosity 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think it's because cleaning up the sprue points is a basic model making skill. Also, Norm just did a review of the Dragon sprue cutters with the specific purpose of properly cutting and cleaning up the sprue points. I agree with you that having more people picking up the hobby is certainly a good thing. But the purpose of these videos is to show how to be better at building models and cleaning up your sprue points is a basic model building skill.

Norm, you are *literally* surrounded by modelmaking professionals and have done projects with all of them, learning as you go, and then you present us with this half-assed monstrosity with its huge gate marks and nubs all over it, and you haven't even painted it? I had to watch through my hands; this was just an embarrassment. Also, I should point out that spraying Bandai plastic with any kind of thinner-based wash is a super-bad idea - the plastic is not like other kits. Alcohol or solvent thinners eat it alive and can cause it to crack, fracture and crumble. Stick to water-based washes.
But jeez, if you aren't going to bother painting things, at least take a little time and pride in your work and clean up the nubs. Godhands, sanding sponges, not that hard.

Those of us who were children in the 1970's (Adam and I are about the same age) will remember this as "The Argo" from "Starblazers". If you were a fan of science-fiction, there was very little good sci-fi on TV to satisfy that hunger. The Japanese anime "Space Battleship Yamato" was dumbed down a bit for the US market and targeted for kids. The name of the ship was changed just in case it might offend some grandparents, although the real Yamato's role in WWII was largely insignificant. Even in the US version, the characters refer to the remains of the original ship as the Yamato in the early episodes when it's sitting intact on the bottom of the dried up Pacific ocean. In reality, the ship ripped itself apart as it sank, much like the Titanic, and is barely recognizable.
For many of us, Starblazers was our first introduction to anime and holds a special place in our hearts. The show (and the subsequent movies) are often described as the Japanese equivalent of Star Trek in the US. However, as the original name implies, the ship was always the star of the show.

Did you ever see the Japanese film from a few years ago called "Yamato"? I call it "Titanic with Machine Guns"- basically the same setup- a woman (granddaughter) hires a fishing boat to go to the site of the Yamato so she can throw in a flower or something. Minus Bill Paxton, an old lady, and a big diamond it's the same narrative structure. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamato_(film)

Sorry, but I’ve been building models for over 55 years now. I would never claim to be an expert but my main modelling interest is sci-fi and WWll/present day naval vessels. Saying all that, the video was informative but I need to offer some friendly critiques.
On the fictional side, I have built something from all genres. From, some kit-bashed subjects to regular kits of Worlds Collide, Star Trek-Wars, BSG, Macross, Gundam, Thunderbirds, etc.... and of course, Starblazers/BS-Yamato (in its different iterations) so I’ve done my share of weathered and battle damaged subjects.
I know newer Bandai kits are designed so that you don’t have to paint, especially if you really don’t want to - but a scale like this can certainly use lots of highlights with silver and gun metal. Also, it’s designed to be put together without glue for most parts but there were seams there that should have been sanded and glued for a better hull - overall parts fit.
On the paint side, washes are best but the rust was still a bit thick for that scale. I know this because some of my early 1:700 scale ships don’t have that much rusting and they have too much on them. If you are showing that much advanced rusting, do some damage to the hull and guns to go along with it. Depending on the subject and scale, a lot of rusting is done with a dry brush technique in any event.
Finally, after doing all that weathering, spray a coat of mat finish on it. It will keep all your dusting (and any decals) in place and prevent any smudges of any of that work that you did - basic finishing process.

Sprue points need to be trimmed. I don't know a single model builder who would leave all those cut points showing as you did. Secondly, just because a model is colored in places doesn't mean it can't be painted. Don't be lazy and look for things that can be skipped! Break out the Battleship Grey and the metallic red!
Thirdly: It's NOT SNAP FIT. I get so tired of hearing people refer to Bandai Kits as "Snap-Together". The correct terminology is "Press Fit" which means the kit is so well made it can be pressed together for test fitting and then separated again for wiring and lighting. Honestly, when was the last time you were able to easily separate a snap-together kit?
Why is your "finished" model missing pieces? My suggestion is to go back and read up on some basic model building because you know what they say about lip-stick on a pig, right?

In a psychological sense Space Battleship Yamato is a highly nationalistic fantasy of the re-emergence of Japanese dominance that was quelled by the outcome of WWII. The Yamato was the last, best hope for the Japanese to turn the tide of the war, it was the "game-changer" that didn't change anything. The idea that the Yamato would be literally raised form the dead to defend not only Japan- but the Earth- I'll leave to your interpretation.

Gee, hello, this a fictional ship. They could have painted it blue and called it some other name. However, since we are getting all technical here (like how people stress over the right colour of a Federation Starship), I humbly submit a quick comment on the issue of whatever rusting should be on the ship to begin with.
Yes it sat at the bottom (according to the show - with the hull more or less intact) of the Pacific for whatever number of years and then exposed to air for another bunch for a total of 250 +/- years. If you were going to represent that Yamato, yes, lots and lots of rust and other damage to the entire ship.
However, it was retrofitted for space, any rust that was on it would have been taken off/hull plating replaced in order to be space worthy and battle ready (and capable to house the “Wave Gun”).
Would you want to take a leaky, metal compromised ship into space and/or battle? No, the ship was totally rebuilt in a close approximation of the original design. There should not be any rust (or very little) on it at all. Battle damage/scoring yes, rust not really.
    As stated, my opinion only.
Final note - That’s the fun of creating fictional models, you can do whatever you want with them (build finish aside). Who’s to say a particular ship was exactly what colour? It’s not like they say it is a particular “FS” colour. Modelling is fun - leave the determining how flat a wheel is to a contest judge, not to the general public. If Norm wanted to submit this model in the IPMS nationals, I would have hoped he would have done a better build job. If it was just to go on a back shelf for display only, it’s ok.

You can totally get away with rust and all other weathering you might find on a seagoing battleship, and you could incorporate the kind of weathering you would put on desert military vehicles. The starship was made by converting the real-life WWII era Japanese Navy battleship Yamato into a spaceship (fun fact, the real Yamato class battleships still hold the record as the largest battleships ever). When they did this in the show, they were rushing to get it done because they had to get to the distant planet Iscandar and back to Earth in under one year or the Earth would become inhabitable. So they took a sunken battleship that had spent decades at the bottom of the Pacific ocean which later became a desert due to Gamilon bombing, and turned it into a spaceship as rapidly as possible. It is VERY believable that there would be surface rust, salt deposits, maybe even barnacles still left on the hull, as well as possible sand blasting and sun fading - maybe even right next to shiny new plating where structural damage had to be repaired...? The possibilities are endless here.

Rust comes in a fairly wide range of colors, from bright orange to dull red. Still, kensalix is correct; at the scale of the model, you're not going to see any texture (compared to, say, the muffler on a 1:35 tank model), so you're far better off going with a good set of rust weathering pigments.

But surely you understand... your nasty criticism and childish attitude isn’t helping anyone.
If you want to critique someone’s work, that’s a great service to offer your fellow craftsmen and enthusiasts.
It helps people grow, and is what makes the Maker community so great.
But throwing blatant insults only shows ignorance, and how oblivious you are to your bad communication skills.
Folks with TH-cam channels, who are offering their opinions and putting out high-quality content… That is their job. So imagine when you’re at work (if you aren’t still living in your moms basement) and you are presented with a task or responsibility. You’ve got to get it done, and sometimes that means cutting corners here and there so that the goals can be accomplished.
next time you see someone cutting the grass at a ballfield or along the highway, be sure to stop by and scream about how you would do it differently. Just rant and rave like a lunatic. Be sure to show the same ignorance you have here.
Because maybe when you landscape at home, you’re passionate about it and take the time to enjoy each and every step. But that dude you’re yelling at… That’s his job and he cuts grass 10 hours a day.…

Weathering works better over paint or dull coat. Bare plastic is too smooth for conventional washes to work properly and this forces you to use a wash that's heavy with pigment. Conventional washes flow over dull coat far better and their lighter pigment ratio has a better, more subtle effect. Then dull coat again to seal in the weathering.

I think it looks ok in the panel seems but those huge blanketed swaths felt a little much. :-)

While I know that the Battleship Yamato also goes into atmospheres and the weathering here is appropriate. I wonder what weathering on only Space-bound craft would look like. I have read there would be no rust since rust requires an atmosphere, would fuels and oil drip since there are in a vacuum?
