Fabulous job on the jukebox Melinda. You took your time obviously and did it right rather than push it through and have a "jukebox". Bought a soppy album i first listened to as a very young lad called Top hits,it was a 1971 UK record and i saw it on amazon this time 50 years later.I was drunk when i hit the click icon but it was only £5 and it got it sent to me.It wasnt an album with the original recordings by the pop groups, the songs were performed by session musicians, but a couple of songs are quite good.Renditions of Nathan Jones by Supremes and Back Street Luv which originally was a song by British prog rock band Curved Air.Reason to Believe,a slushy love song is also on it.Fascinating to see you got a jukebox, good job renovating it,respect!!

First off, I’m very impressed that you and your family got that jukebox up and running . Not an easy task. I’ve owned a few and Seeburg is my favorite. I am actually thinking about getting another but it would have to go upstairs and not sure that I want to tackle that task. As you know, jukeboxes are a lot of fun. Especially if you grew up with them. Pizza Hut was probably the first time I saw one and use to love putting quarters in them and making my selections. Enjoyed! Andre’

Hi M. You're very lucky. Quick story: My sister entered a radio station contest - late 70's - for a Jukebox. I was about 15. She & I got into her Pinto, turned on the radio & the DJ said she had minutes to call in & answer a music question. I told her the answer. She ran back in the house & she won!!! Beautiful memory. Congratulations to you & yours.

Very cool, Melinda! Loved everything about this video. I remember a juke box that was very similar to this one at a pizza parlor my friends and I used to frequent in the early '70's. It took dimes and quarters. Bachman Turner Overdrive's song Takin' Care of Business was a song we used to really like to play. We used to play air guitar when that song came on while we chugged sodas and ate pizza. Hadn't thought about it in many years. Thank you for bringing back those wonderful memories!

That's a very cool memory. There was a jukebox at our public swimming pool. Still Rock & Roll To Me was played constantly. I did pick up that single to rotate in the jukebox from time to time for that reason. I love that song from BTO. That was a hit. Thanks for sharing!

@@MelindaMurphy Your juke box and this discussion has just made me think of how our music has documented our lives. I remember listening to so many bands during my grade school days. Didn't listen to some of the artists for decades and then came back to them recently. It kinda floored me when I listened to them after so many years, because it was like I was time travelling. That jukebox is sweet! The glowing lights on it look amazing with the room lights turned down. That's an awesome jukebox, Melinda! I think it's super cool and I know from experience how much work it can be to restore an old piece of audio equipment like that.
I was at an estate sale a few years ago and there was a Quadrophonic jukebox in the basement, fully loaded with records and ready to go, but the price was way too high. Still I wish I could have grabbed that one. Thanks for showing it to us!

Being offered one for free is very different than paying a high price for one. We don't have alot of money in it and it is fun to own. You are right about the difficulty of fixing old equipment. Thanks Jeff.

    Hey Melinda,
Just wanted to let you know I finally picked up my own jukebox the price was right only 75. It has been something on my to do list for a long time. I settled for a mid 70s model Rockola Princess and I couldn't be more happy with my purchase. It had some minor work to do as it was in disuse for more then 30 years. The gears were cleaned... and oiled. That was it. The speakers sound amazing with all the different sound controls. The only problem was the coin op was not functioning but it did not matter as it is set up for free play. I highly recommend everyone in the VCU to pick one up as you wont regret it. A great way to feature some of your favorite 45 records in you collection.

Nice to see vintage items brought back and given a new life for your enjoyment, especially after all the work you went through to get it completed. Ah-ha! So you did a video about your jukebox. Cool! I've been through everything you've gone through multiple times, but I couldn't just stop with one jukebox. Although I used to hate them, Seeburg has become the majority brand of my collection, eventhough I have 2-each of the other jukebox brands in the 'Big 4'.
7" 45's were never a problem as I already had 100's. The re-issues became very attractive to me as many had the stereo versions of songs previously originally released in mono. Plus, the re-issues often had a hit on each side. As my first juke was a 2-speed, I began accumulating Compact 33's.
Your LS3 is a 2-speed juke, but whereas the other brands did this through mechanical means, the Seeburgs did it electronically through an autospeed unit. Some 'burgs were native 45 rpm and used the autospeed unit to play at 33 1/3 rpm others were native 33 1/3 rpm and used the autospeed for 45 rpm. The autospeed unit was optional, so the native speed would be 45 rpm.
The good news is that this vintage of Seeburg can play either large-hole or small-hole 45's without a problem. If you have an autospeed unit, you may have to disable it. It is actuated by the clamp-arm switch, which is easy to disable.
The LS3 is easy to work on, as you probably have learned already, because all components are easily removable. It is important to service(lube) these regularly. Seeburg recommends their own oil, but that hasn't been available for years. The closest comparable oil is non-detergent 20w motor oil. The easiest to find and more convenient is 3-in-1 electric motor oil or Zoom-Spout electric motor oil.
A word on the Seeburg cartridges. Theses Pickering 345 cartridges are bullet-proof and should last forever. There are multiple different brand styli available and not all are good. Ofcourse it's fortunate if you can find original Seeburg styli, they sound the best. Yellow = Diamond, Purple = Sapphire. The Yellow will last forever in home use, but to extend their life, swap them after 50 plays.
Any longer, then they could damage your records. Seeburg's are very gentle on records and it is best to adjust the tracking pressure to 2.5 grams. Make sure that the tone arm is neutrally balanced in it's fore and aft swing.

Hi there Melinda, that is a cool jukebox you've got there. The lights on it looked fantastic in that dark room. It must have taken some time restoring it and getting it up and running, but I bet it was well worth it in the end and that jukebox will be special to you, hope you enjoy listening to it. I've often had the idea about getting one myself, but most of them can be very expensive and I've often wondered whether the tracking force might be too heavy and cause groove damage on the records. I don't know if the tonearm weight can be adjusted in these things. Thank you for sharing with us. Take care.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

We did replace the stylus and I don't think groove damage will be an issue. I do mostly have gently loved 45'a that are fairly common so that nothing of value could be damaged. This was a long process but with a great reward. We love it. Thank you so much!
