I visited Escanaba this year for the first time. After I cossed over the bridge the first thing I noticed was patstie stands all over. I stopped at one for lunch. It was like stepping into a different time. The store had old chest style freezers made in 1953 and they still work just fine. Lot of memorabilia there. There is something that can be said for harvesting your own food. My family all takes part in the process. Everything from skinning to grinding venison for sausage. When you are standing at the grill. Grilling those inner loins or backstraps. You have a memory of a great hunt and a magnificent animal. That's when it makes perfect sense. You are an active participant in the cycle of life. This is something most people will never understand.
Bless you who ever put this on! I’ve been looking for this for years. Haven’t seen it since I was a teenager. Used to watch it before deer season each year. So good
If he loved hunting, then this movie was definitely up his alley. I first watched this movie as a random rental. Me and my friends saw it as teens, and we loved every second of it. That was 24 years ago. Time flies too fast.
Just a complete classic. I gotta watch this movie before gun season every year. I’m a creature with habits, if tings aren’t just so, tings won’t work out.
I’ve watched this movie before every deer season for years. I didn’t this year and going into the last firearm weekend. Always done great. Watching tonight to bring me back to tradition and hopefully some luck!
I am from Escanaba. I lived across the street from where they filmed Reubens house and saw them filming some of those scenes. Schools are closed opening day of hunting season in Escanaba.
Spent a year in Sterling Heights, MI when I was a teen. I grew up hunting but there was almost a right if passage to it in MI. Even people who lived in the suburbs would have white tail shoulder mounts adorning their dens. It was comforting to see actually.
I know what the old man means when he says there’s a stillness quietness at night. I’ve been out hunting before. And at night everything is so strangely quiet and still make it almost touched
"Behind every good man is a woman who can hunt." I'm revisiting this movie since I moved back to Northern MI a little while ago and am participating in rifle season this year. Ya know, get into the mood of it. I've got no issue with hunting but my husband on the other hand... poor guy is afraid to hurt a fish when we catch one let alone pull the trigger on a deer. I wouldn't change that for the world because he is a very good man.
Theres something eerily interesting about the man who plays ranger Tom. The pale complexion combined with the way he flexes those cherry red lips when he sings and speaks just adds volumes
I Was Born In Stevens Point, Wisconsin. That's Where I Live Now. But I Was Raised Partly In Escanaba, Michigan. I Lived Pretty Much All My Teenage Years Up There. But I Liked This Movie. Unfortunately Some People I Know Up There Including My Mom Didn't Like It. They Thought Jeff Daniels Made The Escanaba Towns Folk (Or As I Like To Call Eskimos) Look Like Idiots. But I Thought It Was Okay.
Tomorrow is the start of Muzzleloader season. I'm watching this tonight and its becoming an annual tradition. Watched it last year the night before season opened and got a deer the next morning. 😀
I watch this every year, once a day from Nov. 1st to November 14th. Every year I don't watch it, I see nothing. When I do, though, anything with horns 6+ goes down
Porcupine piss works, at least as a cover scent. Its one of them animals thats normal for deer to smell above them so it works great if you're in an elevated stand.

Check out Frozen Stupid. It features a lot of people from Escanaba, minus Jeff Daniels. It's still pretty entertaining though as long as you don't mind a major dip in budget.
I first watched this a couple of weeks ago and I can’t stop thinking about this movie. Partly because it’s so damn funny. Partly because like halfway through I realized it’s accidentally a Lovecraftian comedy. Love this movie though.

@@shelbyseelbach9568 yes, seriously. About 1000x dumber than dumb and dumber.. There's a reason why this movie wasn't a box office hit. Its extremely low budget with incredibly basic situations and painful dialogue. I actually did compliment the movie and say that it had a couple of funny scenes. @@adamr8628 you do realize that this movie was a personal project for Jeff that he wrote himself as a play first.
