Not disallowing him to run again, would once again be a moment that the constitution was not upheld by the justice system. And a sign of cowardice. I get what Kinzinger is saying, but the GOP would still try to keep rigging the voting system and gerrymandering districts, even if Trump lost again.

makes you wonder if something needs rewriting so that you have a new document that it is fit for purpose for 2025 to 2075 with room for a new set of "amendments".
Yeah he says they'll heal by losing. What about all the losing they have already experienced and instead keep trying to rig elections, or gerrymander districts? They're not going to suddenly "heal" and do what's right. They will keep trying to do everything they can to make sure they win and after that never lose.

At the risk of contradicting the former Congressman, actually the best thing would be for Trump to be disqualified (validating the strength of our democratic institutions) and then for the GOP to lose and lose and lose...until they return to their senses. Fantastic point. And of course, the 2nd amendment is more archaic than the 14th (yes, the amendments are numbered in chronological order, well, the first 10 came at once).
Yes, the second amendment is an historical anomaly that really no longer has any logical application, but even when it was written it clearly did not mean anything close to what the “gun rights” (read “license to kill”) faction is pretending it meant. The “a well-armed militia being the best security of a free country” clause is completely ignored. It wasn’t this way until very recently. Heller in 2008 was the first federal ruling in the history of the United States that significantly restricted the rights of governments to regulate firearms.

Oh, he’s still very much a conservative republican though. Don’t miss that point. I admire his strength in the moment to stand up and do what was right (and to admit that he missed opportunities earlier on and made mistakes). But being from Chicago, I also know his policies are still quite standard conservative policies (fortunately not the current type: wanting to do away with my nonbinary child craziness, but still not something I would want to vote for)

The electoral system does not supersede the law. This whole idea of “just defeat him at the ballot box” or “his supporters will just riot if he’s jailed” doesn’t work in a constitutional democracy. If Trump violated the Constitution he should not be eligible for reelection, full stop. Any social issues that arise thereof might be painful, but necessary.

It's a scary thing that Republicans who have tried to do the right thing or stood up to the extremism in the party have been run out. We, the people, need to make a stand against extremism and authoritarianism within the current Republican Party. The Republicans have to lose and lose big for the party to realize it's been going down the wrong path. It saddens me to see the state its in right now. This country needs both Conservatives and Liberals working together for it to succeed into the future.

What we need is a credible liberal Party to the left of the Democrats (Not the Green Party, which was last used by Russia to split the Democratic vote in Trump's favor. Adam Kinsinger, liz Cheney , Cassidy Hutchinson are all hero’s for speaking out. They have all lost friends and been shunned by family and others they were once close too. Its time for more Americans to be this way. Stop being a team player, integrity means so much more.
The wonderful thing about the Colorado case--if it does end up barring Tr*mp from public office--is that sets precedent for kicking out a few senators (I'm looking at you, Josh Haulass), and more than a dozen representatives, plus quite a few in the judiciary and executive branch (bye-bye Justice Thomas and Postmaster General DeJoy).

There are thousands like him. Educated Republicans that despise trump as much as we do. We just never hear about them. Half of my huge Irish Catholic family is Republican and every single one of them prays he will spend the rest of his miserable life in prison.
You said it, though. It’s because you’re Catholic. Many Catholic beliefs directly contradict far-right Evangelical political propaganda, so that’s what makes you different a minority.
Issues where Catholics differ from Evangelicals are:
-immigration
-guns
-the work ethic (pull yourself by your own bootstraps myth)
-corporation rights vs individual rights
-helping the poor
-other forms of promoting equity considered “socialism” by the far-right
-the death penalty and the prison system altogether
As you can see, the only place where Catholics align with evangelicals politically are issues of abortion and anything deemed religious “freedom” (in quotation marks because it’s a vague term), with Catholics split in every direction about lgtbq protections

I think they are clearly the lesser of all the evils and there may be some topics that could be compromised on with them to get things done and I’m willing to do that .
