    Was at your performance at patchwork , gent 27 aug. Your set was fan-tas-tic. So nice to see the joy you express. Such energy. Superb.

    great video, got me inspired into moving to modular faster!

    Been toying with the idea of getting a Turing Machine-like module for a while, you're really selling me on Permutation. So much fun these modules.

      I love it! Super easy and fast to generate ideas. I chose Permutation because it just feels great, it's well built and has exactly what I need. I mean, a range knob, as simple as it is, it's the most useful. :) Also, the gate outputs can be very nice when used for accents on drums that are triggered from somewhere else. Especially if you like things to keep changing.

      @@benki._ You know I'm addicted to the gates per step output :) I"ll probably get one of these soon, I love all the features. You're putting it to great use here.

    Permutation is sick. I just picked up a Turing Machine kit to try out. I'm expanding to another 7u 104 as well. Bro I thought I was done after filling up one case...addicting! Thanks for posting this I always get inspired by your vids. Cheers man!

      It’s never enough! I’m building a 18U 168hp case for the studio 😅. And yeah, the turing machine concept is brilliant!

    Very nice and inspiring video, there are so many ways to achieve modulation. it is always nice and helpful to see how others are doing it. Are you also using any live looper for your transitions ?

    Another very helpful video!
    What about quantizing?
    How do you manage to keep a consistent and related sequence from permutation which isn’t scale quantized? I mean playing along with the other “voice” sequences by varigate (which is quantized, right?).

    • @benki._
      @benki._  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right, the sequence from Varigate is quantized but Permutation is not. I don't do anything to make them sound good other than manually (and very roughly) tuning one voice to the other as quickly as I can. In most cases I only make sure they're not in the same frequency range. I just push one up or down an octave or two and it fixes most of the problems (of course, depends on what you're going for. I know my live stuff is pretty weird :) )
      Also, it might sound really stupid but if you don't conform to any scale and you make all the voices atonal but one, then you just don't need to match anything.
      A lot of times LIP is the one playing the atonal, more percussive, stabby sounds, even though its CV sequence is actually very controlled and predictable. It just doesn't sound that way because of the oscillator's settings. This allows me to put even just a sine wave from odessa on top of it, and no matter what it plays, even if it's a completely out of tune sequence, it will sound more melodic and structured than anything else playing below it. It's all relative. Or so they say. :)

      Also, I'm always thinking about who's moving. 90% of the time I'll have only 1 voice moving up and down in pitch, and the rest will be static but will have more movement in timbre domain. I like to think in what I call "domains", and I try not to have 2 voices moving in the same "domain". These "domains" are pitch, timbre, and rhythm. At least that's what helps me keep things more or less under control and relatively musical. For example, if the LIP voice is playing something more melodic, I might use the Odessa for something more atonal. At the same time, I'll make sure the LIP voice isn't playing a rhythm that is complex, if my bass and my other percussion are already complex. I'll try to limit it to playing only 8th notes instead of syncopated stuff, since that is taken care of by the percussive elements.
      I hope that makes sense.

    Can't wait to learn some new tricks !!! Already incorporated the "gate mutes" & FX aid XL (delay into dual shimmer) "high pad sounds". I was wondering, did I see it correctly in your video, that you connect the Lapsus Os to CV 1 of the FX aid XL, to give that Benki high pad sound burst ? (My pad sound dies out much quicker than yours, maybe you run it true extra reverb ?) Nice performance(s) @ modular world by the way, really enjoyed it !!!

    • @benki._

      Hi! glad you liked them thank you!
      What I usually do with lapsus os regarding the pad sound is controlling Monsoon's (Clouds) pitch, which does its thing on whatever sound I send into it, and the long reverb you hear is its own internal reverb. I used to run that into another reverb too. There's a video in "How I Play" Season 1. It's the last one on the playlist, or one before it. can't remember, but your answer's there. :)
      I only used FX AID XL with the small system, that appeared on "season 2". it played a similar role to Monsoon, creating textures out of one of the voices, but the cv it got from lapsus os was just a minor thing, to make the delays longer every time I'd highness the kick.That would create a bigger contrast between the breakdowns and the drops. I mean, relaxing the breakdowns and making the delays more obvious, and then tightening the delay times again when all the elements come back together.

      @@benki._ Thanks for taking the time to answer my question ! Now it's clear I tried to reproduce with the FX aid what I heard you doing with the Monsoon :) Now I get it, quite simular but but not exactly the same. Thanks again :)

      @benki._  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! glad you liked it! "How I Play - Season 2" is all about a system half the size so that should give you an idea of how I'd go about it. :) Cheers!
