I have a huge amount of camera gear accumulated over 40 years when I first started shooting for a living. That includes everything from FF's like the EOS 5DsR, through APS-C's to MILCs for compactness. As I have got older, and travel restrictions in many countries make it harder to carry a lot of gear, a super zoom has become more attractive, especially now I am retired. One of the major drivers that make a super zoom like this attractive is that I no longer produce large, detailed prints. Like an increasing number of photographers, my output is mainly onto digital platforms that are not as demanding as large prints. I had enjoyed limited success the the Canon PS50 and 60D, but the sensors were too small and too prone to noise. I made a decision to tolerate the fairly horrendous menu system of the Sony to get the RX-10M4's 1" sensor, fantastic lens, sensor, buffer etc. My subjects are mostly travel, wildlife and scenic - I don't shoot sport but I want something I can put in a holster and get on a plane, knowing I can deal with pretty much any subject I want to shoot (save super wide angle shots). Until someone comes up with an APS-C compact super zoom, this will be a great camera when flexibility and compactness are critical.

Great review guys. Mate of mine recently bought the Sony A6300+Zeiss 16-70mm, which cost him over 2,000 euros. He is now complaining he wants something with a longer reach but can't afford the pricey Sony lens. I showed him the RX10iii in a shop and he was gobsmacked, "This is the camera I should have bought!" He doesn't know or care about sensor size, he is not a gear-snob, he just wants a camera to do what he wants. This camera is for people like him.
I think there are a lot of people like your friend. The A6300 is brilliant at AF, but obviously the big lenses are expensive as well as big and heavy. If the 1in sensor is good enough for you, the RX10 IV is a remarkable camera.

Even today it still seems like a great alternative to carrying a lot more gear! When I want to stay light and can live with a smaller zoom I have a Rx100vii, but when considering a longer zoom option this might be better than carrying a telephoto and another lens. Looking at used options. This was a great video. Enjoyed seeing you both!
This is still a really good option, especially if you're travelling anywhere there's wildlife.
Very good info! Just upgraded to the RX10 lV. Looking forward to the improved auto focus and frame rates. I have Lightroom for Raw, but when I want to upload a zoo album on Facebook, I generally use JPEG extra fine. So in creative mode, what would be the optimal settings for wildlife as far as sharpness, contrast, and saturation are concerned? And would Standard be better than Neutral or Vivid?
A small camera like that made me realize you can do a lot with small sensor if you know the limitation and understand the capacity of you camera. I ended up selling my FF camera and settling in the m43 format for everything. Weight, size, ergonomic, ui ... are all very important aspect of the tool we choose.

Very informative video. I bought a refurbished Minolta superzoom for $295, then started watching TH-cams. Now a victim of the "in for a penny, in for a pound" syndrome, I'm ordering a Sony RX lV dor $1250 refurbished, along with a $159 Fieldview 7" monitor for mounting on the coldshoe fot blogging(since the screen doesn't flip) and various accessories. I may keep the Minolta to let a friend use it on shoot trips. A fully used tpuchscreen would have been great. Timelapse would be nice. Geo and be done via a phone I've heard. Biggest drawback is low light limitations. But, overall, a great balance of functionality, size & weight, convenience, and cost. Where is the Rx10 V already?

I have the rx10 3, it's still a great camera, the iv is only an upgrade if you do a lot of sports otherwise the iii will do fine and you can still get action shots with the iii, it's no slouch, it still does 14fps which is more than most dslrs. Wildlife photography is very time consuming if your going to do it properly, you need to have the time and go to the right locations so you'd invest in the best gear which accounts for few people.

1/1000th of a second above f/8, 1/2000 below that. Filter size is a bog-standard 72mm.
I have a A7rii and will be traveling to South America on my bike soon. I am thinking of just bringing a 35/2.8 and a 55/1.8 lens with ARii due to size and weight limitations on a bike. Two questions; first is about low light use -- would you say the arii is much better? Second, if I were to crop the arii large file, what would be the difference in image quality comparing the 35mm to the 600mm? I know that is drastic, but I think I would use the 35mm for daily use and the 55mm for portrait or shots in villages at night. Any help here?
I've carried the same kit you're describing, the A7r II and 55mm f1.8 and 35mm f2.8 - I loved the combination. Yes, you can crop a 42 Megapixel image quite a lot, but if you want 20 Megapixels or more at the end, you won't be anywhere near 600mm in coverage! I suggest you download some sample images form the A7r II and 55mm combo and try cropping them to see how they look - I have some on my review at cameralabs.com.
I can see this as an interesting compact option for birding and wild life shooters who do not want to lug around large telephoto lenses. Perfect for the wild life photographer who like to travel light. Even my relatively tiny m43 lenses can get pretty big once they go beyond the super tele range.

I remember Minolta and Fujifilm used to do this with non-motorised zooms a long time ago, but they were shorter ranges. Motorised is also preferred for video use.
At around the 200mm zoom range (limit of the RX100 vii), what would take the better picture the RX100 vii or the RX10 iv. I'm guessing there is something about the RX10 iv having a better aperture, so being able to use better shutter speed at this zoom length?
It's a good question, as while the RX10 IV lens should be better quality, it does have an even longer range. I'll try to do a comparison sometime.
I’m about to go back into videography as solo artist so to speak and this camera is going to be my choice for starting out. I’ll eventually upgrade to the A7R iii with a good set of lenses but this will do for now I think. Thanks for the info guys!
When I see discussions about the suitability of a camera, one of the first questions I ask (and don't often hear) is what is the output. Most people ask what will be shot, which is fair enough, but the output is the end product. It takes a lot better quality gear to produce large, high-quality prints compared to posting images on line or on digital devices. Often images have to be downsized to fit onto webpages, so for a camera with a smaller sensor, for most people not producing large prints, a 1" bridge camera should be fine. Given that the smaller the sensor, the more it is vulnerable noise in low light. I have a lot of cameras including a FF Canon 5DsR and 5DIV, and I use them when appropriate. However, there are many times when I want to shoot, knowing that I will not print or provide the images commercially, and then a bridge camera comes into the frame. This is especially true when I am traveling on smaller aircraft where I cannot use my large camera bags as carry-on. With the RX-10IV I can just have the camera, batteries and other camera accessories but no issues with carry-on allowances. Two things I would like to see are vastly improved menu interfaces, and a fully articulated screen. Most of the rest of the characteristics of this camera are brilliant for its price point and size.

Hi, may I ask why Sony did ditch the ND filter for both Mark III and IV of the RX10, probably some technical limitation?
I talk about this in the video. Apparently it's very difficult to implement on the lens in the Mk III and IV.
Great abd thorough info! Im close to buying it.. would apreciate some advice on accessories. E.g. i plan to get 256gb sd card.. is that enoughtmfor 4k? Uv filter needed? Nd filter required for e.g. Mauritius sunlight? Thanks! Subbed!
The electronic shutter means there's very fast shutter speeds for stills, but if you're shooting video, i'd get an ND for it. As for a UV, depends how careful or careless you are! The card size depend son how much you want to fit on it. I shot plenty on a 64GB card.
RX10iii is a replacement for all the Nikons and lenses I ever owned.

I find it incredibly useful specially because I shoot micro four-thirds too and I hadn't found yet a book written from a micro four-thirds or mirrorless perspective. Many of these books are written from a DSLR perspective which isn't always helpful but for the very general things

I'd like to know if shooting with electronic shutter instead of mechanical shutter influences image quality, dynamic range, color...
I already know that there are banding (I think its called) problems when shooting certain high speed objects and also some lights flickering under artificial lights.
However I would like to know if shooting under natural light portraits, landscape, street... there are any problems or loss of image quality.
P.D. do you know or have written more books from a micro four thirds user perspective? I would love to find more books as good and useful as this one. The inclusion of all those photos so well explained is awesome, plus having those prints at that size with such nice quality make me believe even more in my mft system. (Although Fuji seems very nice too, but lack of ibis puts me a bit off as I am used to it already)
Thanks, I'm really pleased you enjoyed my book, and I'm also proud to have done one which used mirrorless cameras only. But that said, all of the techniques I described also apply to DSLRs and vice versa. As for other books about MFT, I'd suggest looking at some of the Olympus projects or ambassadors as they might have done something. Olympus Uk also does a good online magazine at olympusmag.co.uk/
How is the image stabilization at the long end compared to the RX10 lll?
The degree of compensation is the same but the algorithm is better at figuring out if you're making a deliberate adjustment versus wobbling. Make it easier to frame and adjust at long focal lengths.
Gordon, one question to help me decide whether to upgrade from the M3. I find the M3 more than adequate for my needs except when trying to focus fully zoomed out, particularly under non-optimal light conditions. The M4 is supposed to have a faster focus mechanism, but does this translate to good focusing at 600mm?Thanks in advance.
First things first! When I say zoomed-out in my reviews, I mean using the widest focal length on the kens. When I zoom-in, I'm using the longer focal lengths. So I assume you mean zoom-in, right? If you do, then yes, the performance at 600mm is very usable - check out the results I show here and in my review at cameralabs.com

Can you set the camera to full-time electronic shutter to make it completely quiet when you want it, or does the camera decide when to switch from mechanical to electronic shutter?

I agree, I always prefer to have the camera with me when i record, BUT I also only like to record when I'm very familiar with the camera and have completed a certain amount of tests. Invariably I'm only in this position after the camera has been returned to the manufacturer as it takes time to fully understand the features and results. It's a difficult balance to get right, but if I were to always film with the camera in my hands, I may not be able to present as confident a report.

The FZ2000 / FZ2500 is really good for the money. if you're shooting fast moving action or need the most confident video refocusing, then the Sony's AF has the edge, but if that's no a priority, then I'd go for the Panasonic and spend the rest on travel (and coffee donations!)

The RX10 MIV sounds compelling, but it will be hard to consider, since the RX10 M II I bought in Sept 2015 failed me three times, needing repairs. Good thing I spent the $250 for 3 years of coverage, because at $400 a pop to repair it, it would have ended up in the trash by now. It just failed me for the third time on a trip to Olympic Ntl Park. All the buttons on the back just stop working. It still turns on and off, and takes pictures at whatever I have it set at - a true point and shoot camera, for $1300. How long will the Mark IV last? And what will I do when it fails me for the 4th time, after my warranty runs out? Pretty expensive paperweight.
How is the portrait photos in day light ? I am thinking of buying this dslr as my 1st and last dslr.....

Hi there, thanks for the video. I was hoping to find something similar to what I have on my A99ii which is strangely just called "Focus Standard" on there. When I assign this Focus Standard to a button it allows me to have full wide focusing on which is great 80% of the time but then when I want to lock onto something specific that the camera isn't doing for me on it's own (eg the wrong person's face or a bird in a busy bush etc) I can hold this button and it activated the very center focusing square and then locks that until I let go of it. A super useful focusing tool to have. Any idea if this camera has it / has similar and where to find it? Thanks for your time.

@@cameralabs no worries Gordon, it's still such a great little camera. I take it everywhere I don't want the weight or hassle of a full frame + lenses. It's just slightly annoying when I want to focus on something specific and the camera naturally doesn't always know what that might be do that single dot focusing lock is so useful.

Doug, you should go to a rookery that draws the attention of a lot of wildlife/birding photographers and look at the equipment many of them are using. The RX-10 Mk4 would be right at home among this group and many of them are spending more money on cameras than what the RX10 Mk 4 costs. I wish the RX had a fully articulated LED screen but other than that I think it's approaching perfection.

I just recently purchased it, although I have a similar zoom range camera - Panasonic Lumix FZ300 - and sold off my Nikon D5600 with a 18-140 kit lens. The main reasons to get this in addition to the Panasonic was the phase-detect AF, the much larger 1-inch type sensor, higher 24 fps, and the zoom, focus, and aperture rings. The Panasonic though has F2.8 throughout the zoom range, but the Sony will beat it on image quality. The Panasonic is full touch and the menu system is much better.

I'm upgrading from the FZ330 bridge but cant decide to go for the RX10 mk 4 or the Canon R7 with the budget lense RF 100-400mm which isn't weatherproof and has a slow aperture. Im still learning so was wondering if you could say definitively that one would give better results than the other.
How long a zoom range do you need? I mean, the 100-400 on an R7 will reach almost as far as an RX10, but obviously it misses out on the wide stuff, so you'd need two lenses if you went that route.

I got my fz330 as I got into bird photography during lockdown and it has done me proud. That said it has its limitations. At the moment I don't really use the wide end much but it's nice to have I guess.
I know the R7 seems a great camera but the RF 100-400MM let's it down possibly, not least because of the lack of decent weather resistance but also as it's a slow lens?
If the rx10 mk4 produces as good images, has almost as good auto focus and is brighter than the Canon set-up I would go for the sony but don't which is best!
1st world problems I know...

Well as an older camera, the RX10 IV won't share the same subject detection as the recent Canons, so that's a point to the R7, But it's still an amazing all-in-one bridge camera, the best if you still want a bridge. If you're happy with a shorter range per lens and can accommodate a bigger body, the R7+100-400 will be a powerful alternative. Also consider the Sony A6700 and 70-350 zoom.
Bought and using in 2024. Still relevant today.

Hi Gordon. No, they have not removed it. It is featured on the Mode dial. Sadly though it is garbage. Other Sony cameras have a good to great Sweep Panorama mode but on the RX10 line it has continued to be near useless. Consumers considering this line of cameras should be aware of this. It is a shame as this line is not cheap & aimed at travel & nature/wildlife enthusiasts who would see this mode as a reason for considering this camera.
However, if you know of anyway to improve it or if there is any update in the works that would be helpful. Or even if you can add this as a Con to your review, that would save a few people I am sure!

Good to see that Focus Peeking was substantially improved. Can we compare it to the Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6k which I use for video shoots.? Same style .?
I've not seen the Blackmagic in practice so can't compare it, but the peaking on the RX10 IV is now certainly better than most cameras I've tested.

I'm thinking to get two of these cameras for a scientific purpose, I do not know if this will do the job by putting the two cameras at 90 degrees and recording a footage at 1000 fps can I double the number of frames if the two files will combine together? Maybe !
Gordon, another great review with great info. I initially decided on a Lumix LX100M@, but find the 75mm focal range too limiting. I just discovered these “bridge” cameras and became very interested in the Lumix FZ1000 II, but now seeing this review has me unsure of what to do. I read your reviews of this RX10 IV on Cameralabs, along with the Lumix FZ1000 and FZ 2000/2500, but not the FZ1000 II. Have you tested the New FZ1000 II? This is now my choice, the FZ1000 II or the RX10 IV, with my main concerns being Sharpness and focusing on moving subjects. I enjoyed your reviews on Cameralabs so much that I bought you some coffee. I hope you won’t mind if I message you on Facebook about my camera choice. Thanks again for all the great info, even if it has made my choice less clear! :D

I've not reviewed the newer FZ1000 yet, and may not now due to its age, but I will be posting some more superzoom reviews at cameralabs.com next week, including the Canon SX70 HS and Nikon B700 - these are cheaper models than the Sony RX10 IV and FZ1000 though. If you can afford these models, I'd get one of them instead as the sensor is bigger and better quality. PS - I barely use Facebook!

I really like the Lumix, but if the Sony is much sharper and better with focusing on moving subjects, I’ll buy that one. Decisions, decisions. Thanks again.

Two weeks ago I was ready to pull the trigger on a purchase of a Fuji X-T2 with the Fuji 100-400mm zoom. I am a bird photographer and do a lot of work in the field often during 1-4 mile hikes. Well, I was ready for the Fuji, then the Sony RX10 IV rears its head in the market place. Argghhhh...which one to purchase? Some bullet points that might help with your answer:
- I am a visual guy. I like good IQ
- I am mostly interested in stills, not movies.
- I often shoot in heavily canopied forests with less than optimal light
- I am attracted to the lighter weight of the Sony vs. the Fuji combo. It's about 2 LBS lighter, but I can handle the Fuji
- Both are weather "resistant" which is good because sometimes it rains when I am in the field.
- Autofocus is extremely important to me - it has to nail and stay with objects that are often in the clutter of branches, leaves, etc.
- I have tried the Fuji combo in the field for a few days.
- I will have to wait to try the Sony
- I can't wait :-) Well, I have been researching cameras for months and renting some, now I have to wait until the end of October 2017 to get a Sony RX10 IV rental....ignore this bullet...I am impatient. :-)

Love your review (like all your past ones), and was all set to buy the M4, but it seems that Sony has decided to NOT have apps on the M4 (at least so far). While I agree that the process was unduly complicated, what this means is that it is not possible to do timelapse with this, at least, not without buying additional hardware, or, possibly, physically hooking up an iPhone if the defunct Triggertrap dongle works. I was annoyed when Sony removed the ND filter from the M1, but this is enough to make me decide to stay with my M3 until Sony incorporates the app capability in a $1,700 camera.
I think I mentioned that in the review. No apps on this, the A9 or the A7r III, so I'm guessing they're not using them going forward. As you know I dislike the app process, but agree Sony now needs to integrate some of them - especially an interval timer - into the main operating system. I've also mentioned this in my A7r III video. I tell them every time I see them!

it's 1/2.3-inch sensor but you get a lot from it than a smartphone.

Smartphones are pretty advanced today, good for people who want to shoot decent photos and for people you want to share on social medias for "quick views and likes"...
This is what most people do today,... printing is rare, but a lot of social medias.
For social medias, it's mainly smartphone: then difficult to tell the difference between 4k and 1080p, a photo shooted with an 1" sensor or #M43, #APSC, maybe with a #FullFrame,...
People on social medias don't really pay attention to details...
They look quickly, like and/or comment, Sroll down

But smartphones can't replace camera and the glass (optics) for now...
How many cameras you have to add to a cellphone to really compete a digital camera?
I have a #Samsung #Galaxy smartphone, its awesome, this makes me thinking what Samsung could deliver if they did not exit the digital camera market.
The #NX1 was an amazing #APSC.
People will come back a bit to digital cameras, at least for advanced compacts, beginner mirrorless , when they are tired of selfies.
Digital camera companies are learning as well, the camera apps are getting better and better....
#Zeiss understands the concept, #ZX1: #Shoot + #Edit in camera (app or #Lightroom) and #Share =>>> as quick as possible!!!
Bridge superzoom cameras are a good option for people who want to learn photography without putting too much money on gears.
Bridge cameras offer DSLR / Mirrorless like functionalities.
Lessons learned with them help when you upgrade to a bigger camera, bigger sensor, ... that was my case when I switch to an #APSC.
The 1" sensor bridge cameras are awesome...
1.- Waiting to see what #Sony will deliver us with a #RX10MV, but hope the screen will be a fully articulated one.
Don't know if they have plan for a new menu system?!?!
2.- Hope #Canon with add built-in EVF in the next #G3X, the #PowershotG3XMII, why not a #CanonEOSRP body like?

I sold my camera equipment to buy the Rx10M4 absolutely no regrets. Quality shown in sample pics convinced me. Why $1700...it is a Zeiss lens, try adding that lens to your camera and see how you come out.
And it’s at its sharpest at f4 fully extended

I'm not a tech and a lot is over my head, but you mention the EVF is not as good as the optical on a DSLR...understandably, but I am considering this mostly for video...had been vonsidering a pro, semi pro camcorder type machine but wax recommended this, I discovered soon sftrf buying a camcorder, Pan. V750, that I can not do without a VF for birds/wildlife. I was prepared to spend up yo about £3000 on a camcorder of suchlike. Which, generally would be better...if that is not too general a question?Thanks
I never said optical is better than electronic! I actually prefer electronic viewfinders over optical ones! And as you know, an optical viewfinder doesn't work for video at all, so if that's your application, you need an electronic one.
I certainly assumed optical, where possible would be better than electonic; nearly half way through the review you mentioned that the EVF was not as 'responsive' as the A9 or an optical on a DSLR. I suppose that does not mean you considered it 'better'.
Anyway, thanks for you're reply. I'm now used to carrying around a few kilos of camera and getting lousy video of birds in flight so this would seem to be a good 'instead of'.

When you were speaking about the image stabilization, I could understand which camera you were speaking of since you just said "they". Was it the Sony or the Panasonic. I believe it has to be the Panasonic model, but it was just unclear because "they" could me either of the two brands.

To compare the A6300...I'd choose the Sigma MC-11 and Sigma 100-400C...yes it misses the wide end, but a person probably has another camera or lens to cover that. Anyway, that combo is about $1950...and that's with a WAY better sensor than the RX10-IV. Anyway, that's just a couple thoughts.

when i see this ..i am almost happy i lost my Sony A 77 2 and a nice Tamron 70-200 in the mountains some days ago.....after recovering a bit i thought..ok..now i go for a A99 2...but than i thought of the hassle with all these lenses ( Tamron 150-600 etc. )....so now a RX 10 mark 4 is some days away...
It's a great super-zoom camera, but the high ISO performance won't be as good as the A77 or A99. That's the compromise you'll need to make if you want a massive zoom in a similar sized body. I still like it a lot though!

@cameralabs , hi Gordon, what are your thoughts on the rumour that the RX10 iv will end production this year and apparently no mark 5, in essence, the end of the RX10 line? Personally, I was waiting for the MK 5 as a general purpose do anything and travel camera. The argument one hears is that bridge cameras hurt sales of higher end products yet my view is, the vast majority of people aren’t planning to turn professional or simply want a capture device that is more capable than a mobile phone. As a matter of fact the market that use mobile cameras is the larger group and is the same market as the RX10 looking for a camera capable of going beyond the mobile phone zoom range with similar convenience. To me it doesn’t make sense to end the RX10 or RX product line, somehow Fuji, Nikon, Canon and apparently now Sony are moving away from Bridge camera market. Any thoughts?

What you have to bear in mind is that these cameras are great holiday cameras and are a jack of all trades but a master at none. They won't replace dedicated lenses, certainly not for pros but for most of us they are more than good enough
I wouldn't say it's a master of none - it was very confident in a broad array of conditions. I'd be very happy with one.

From most reports it appears SONY is not sending a Mark V of this camera. We could debate the reasons at another time. Hopefully their decision will allow the prices to come down and make the remaining stock even more affordable before scarcity makes them rise. The technology within this camera makes it very useful and relevant, even now, some years after its initial release. Its versatility makes it ideal for virtually all kinds of photography and that's its strength. Whether as a primary or secondary lens the purpose is to take pictures and this camera does it well. There is a place for "bridge" cameras and I hope the manufacturers realize that. Until then, I will continue to use the RX-10IV and perhaps add a second one, it fits my use well.
It's still unbeatable but they have no interest in updating any of the rx series.
@@cameralabs Unfortunately true. We all know their direction is profit based and in interchangeable lenses and bridge cameras negate that. I think they will come back to the idea especially as prices on those systems rise. Camera sales as a whole have been dropping and instead of being forced and herded into the same direction they will find numbers in sales of bridge cameras and return to the form factor and numbers of people who will use them and not necessarily need the higher end specs and equipment they push each tech cycle.

I had a question that is preventing me from running out and picking up the RX10 M4. How can I remote, thru the app or even via wire, trigger the HFR (960fps) feature. I have seen it done on the RX10 M3 via a remote [th-cam.com/video/jNF-j2B8caU/w-d-xo.html]. I use a EX-F1 at 600fps but the resolution is 432x192 where as the RX10 M3 is 912x308 in time priority for 960fps at 7 seconds. There are times I have no operator for the camera which is the reason for the remote, I would use the stop trigger function. Thanks in advance.

I was ready to pick up the Panasonic 2500 for the 4K but the RX10 M4 would also fill the slow motion update I need from the EX-F1 in regard to better resolution. I do a lot of firearm trouble shooting for Law Enforcement and NFA enthuthiest's.

Look at Micro Four Thirds. You can get the Panasonic G85 with the 12-60mm lens for $997.99. Add in the 100-300mm II for $647.99 and you end up with $1,645.98. Everything there is fully weather-sealed, and you would be able to shoot 4K video. Sure you lose about 40mm of range in the middle, but I'd still take that deal over the RX10 Mark IV because the larger Micro Four Thirds sensor gives better low-light performance and a little more depth of field control. Plus you can grow with the camera...perhaps later with a 35-100mm f2.8 to fill in that gap.
Sony RX10 has no pixel binning, full pixel readout...that's a big deal in video more so than the larger sensor in my opinion. Albeit in a decently lit scenario.
totally true, plus, the rx10m4 is not a very stable camera, unlike Nikon, Canon. The rx10m4 software has so many problems, I bought one after watching all the reviews and returned it after a week. the 960 fps is nice but the its so hard to use and the focusing problem made it useless, other than that the camera is just a soso.

I feel Panasonic has offered more for the money up till now - but now the RX100m4 has new sensor with Phase AF - it clearly becomes the winner in this class -
So far Panasonic have resisted implementing Phase AF - like Fuji and Sony have resisted Touch LCD :)
I have a feeling that Panasonic will be left behind here as I think they still are not implementing Phase AF - I sure hope I am wrong -
Now Sony has had the RX100m5 sensor for some time and typically Panasonic gets access to it 6-12 months later - so will be interesting to see what happens -
But really Panasonic needs to replace their DFD item with Phase AF - or their own DPAF
I'd love to see Panasonic with PDAF, but they are big believers in contrast AF. I find their DFD can work well, but not as well as this model for quick action.

Are you saying you can't find the videos, or they won't play. Try VLC for the playback.

@@trevorsiddons9018 Sony hides them and their location depends on what format you recorded them in. First open the SD card, then open the private folder. If you recorded video with the menu set to MP4, have a look in m4root, then inside clips. If you recorded in the AVCHD format, you will see a separate file called AVCHD in the private folder. Control-click it and show the contents. A couple of levels later you'll see the files. It's all annoyingly complex, but well-documented online if you search for it on google - same for VLC if you search for that. I also think the folder structure is in the full manual, did you have a look at that?

What about continuous AF in video (not in stills). On Tony & Chelsea Northrup's channel there is a video th-cam.com/video/nU8F0IUGHRM/w-d-xo.html showing the RX10 IV repeatedly losing focus of the approaching bird. What was your experience? Did you try that?

PS - generally the video AF on this and similar cameras won't be as responsive as the stills experience, so it's only suitable for slower subjects. But as you'll see, it did work well with the runner until he got really close.

An Olympus OMD 10 Mark III and a 75-300 mm lens is cheaper. You can put your 12-60, 12-whatever on a used EPL 5 and carry both but yeah its great to have an all-in-one camera.
Martin, the OMD EM10 series are lovely cameras but they're not great at continuous AF. The only Olympus that can autofocus as well as this is the EM1 Mark II.
My niece has a Canon Rebel 1300. She has two children 2 and 4 yrs old. She is also i-phone owner. I was thinking that if she could put the camera on a gorilla pod on the dining room table, hold a child in her lap and fire the SL-2 from her phone. Is that feasible as well as cool?
Yes but you can get that graduation picture when the student is walking across the stage. You know, at airshows, they have slow prop planes flying in the same patterns over and over again. And, sometimes, jets will do multiple fly-overs. About 10 yrs ago, I shot with an Olympus 510 which is pre-mirrorless and the 75 to 300 lens and I shot several 100 pictures and got enough keepers shooting one-frame at a time. I have yet to update the 75-300, which is too slow over an adapter. At the same airshow, I got to handle a Canon 50d with a 100-400 and it was significantly faster even without 80D dual-pixel tech. Nevertheless, the Canon owner was not happy with the focusing speed back then. Hopefully, he was in a better mood after he got home and looked at what he got.

When you compare to 35mm focal length equivalent why aren't you doing the same for aperture? They say that RX10m4 is f2.4 at wider end, with a 2.7x crop factor, it means roughly f6.3 equivalent on a 35mm lens. Everyone is matching focal length, but not aperture.
Well the thing with aperture is f4 on one system is the same as f4 on another in terms of exposure. The thing that changes between systems is the depth-of-field. So, yes, the RX10 Mk 4 may have f4 at 600mm, and it may allow the same exposure as a 600mm f4 full-frame DSLR lens, BUT the depth of field is completely different.
Yes, the DOF at f4 on rx10m4 is equivalent to the DOF at f6.3 on a 35mm sensor size. You used better phrasing than me. :)
To get depth of field for a 1-inch sensor, multiply the f/stop by 2.7. So f/4 with this camera actually has a f/10.8 depth of field. A DOF calculator is now online, making this easy: mmcalc.com

Ladder, f/6.3 is close. The calculator I linked to doesn't have f/2.4, and gets f/6.21 for f/2.3. For f/2.4, I get f/6.48, or f/6.5 rounded, by multiplying 2.4 x the 2.7 crop factor.

Hehe, I wouldn't willingly give up any reach for a wider angle. In fact, if I could pick any 25x zoom, I think 28-700 would be perfect.
Everyone wants something different! Thing is, with 20 megapixels, there's still latitude to crop the 60mm images and make them look even longer, but you can't do this at the wide end.
Well, you can stitch. 24 mm is about the widest angle I normally like. The pictures I get at the wide end of my 10-18 mm STM (16 mm EQ) always make people near the edges look very fat. When a super wide angle lens has no linear distortion, areas will necessarily become inconsistent, and shapes will become distorted.
About the 600 mm, I wonder how much worse the quality is out there on the RX10iv compared to an APS-C camera like my 70D with a Sigma 150-600c.
I have another Sony camera with a long Zeiss zoom lens, the HX400V with a 24-1200, but unfortunately with a tiny sensor. And at 1200 mm the image quality is good only in ideal light, low humidity and at shorter distances. So for photographing a blackbird in a nearby tree top on a sunny afternoon, it's almost as good as the 70D (not quite, though). But for shooting a house at 300 m distance it's completely useless even in bright sunlight, where the 70D still delivers.
So the sensor of the RX10iv being sort of in the middle, I imagine that the image quality will also be somewhere in between - i.e. between quite good and absolutely useless at long distances, so hardly better than just okay. Or am I wrong?

Every camera could be described as a point and shoot camera, in that you point it and shoot it. The Nikon story is talking about models that only cost a couple of hundred dollars - true low-end stuff, killed by smartphones and rightly so. The RX10 series, like other high-end superzooms, goes way beyond the capabilities of traditional point-and-shoots and smartphone cameras though, not just in photo and movie quality, but also zoom range, autofocus, burst speed, overall handling. PS - I don't use artificial lighting, so compatibility or lack of is not an issue for me personally.

We would love this RX10 & RX100 series if they would work with radio TTL on major third party strobe lights.
We passed because the lens is one stop slower than the RX10 II.
And when shooting events & wedding receptions at F8.0 of higher will not work well without artificial lighting (TTL/M radio strobes).
At the same time, CamFi doesn't support two of these model series.
So connection them to the ATG MRMC (robotic) will be useless.
But if you a shooter that doesn't like to lug around brick camera & heavy lenses, then the RX10 IV would be nice it you have bright light.
This camera is really a F4.0, you just get the little benefit at 24mm to F2.4.
At well beyond $2,000.00 (remember you are going to need a flash), many rather go with cheap cameras like Canon EOS-7D Mark II or Nikon D7500. With a much bigger sensor & they already have lenses/flash.

1, Sony should use the new battery (NP-FZ100) from A9 in RX10mk4.
Stop using those tiny crap toy battery. You need 10 per day.
2, The write card speed is slooooooow. Extremely slow. Around 30MB/s only on the fastest card. I know it don't support UHS-II. But 30MB/s is slow for UHS-I.
3, No EIS on 4k. Many smart phone today have enough process power to EIS at 4k 30P.
4, They should use the fully articulated LCD from A77, A99, A77mk2, A99mk2.
5, I want a optional vertical grip. Not just for better balance and also longer battery life.
Don't get me wrong, RX10mk4 is a excellent camera. :-)

Yes, by virtue of a 2.7 times crop you get an equivalent field of view to 600 mm FF camera, but you also understand the implications of the far smaller amount of total light collected. Saying 600 mm f/4 may seem like a convenient mental shortcut, but it does not befit a show as excellent as yours to take such liberties with accuracy.
There's a difference in depth of field between formats, but in terms of exposure f4 on one system is identical to f4 on another.
I understand the exposure question - focal length does not come into equation, but I was addressing your statement about focal length. It is a 220 mm lens, not 600 mm. That's why it is so compact. There are no miracles in physics.
Sure and as a physics graduate myself, I don't like anyone pulling the wool over anyone's eyes, but the bottom line is what field of view does a system offer. That's what matters to someone using the camera. Yes, the actual focal length may be 220mm, but the field of view delivered by the system is equivalent to 600mm. So what you'll fit on the frame is the same as what you'll get when using a genuine 600mm lens on a full-frame system. I'm sure I also described the field of view as being equivalent in the video too.

It is not a 1" sensor - nothing like - it is 1.0-type. You and many others have assumed an inch sign which is not there.
No, it IS a 1in type sensor. The measurement does not however refer to the actual sensor dimensions, but the diameter of a theoretical vacuum tube that would have surrounded it on an old style TV camera. Same for phone sensors being described as, say, 1/2.3in. NOT the actual sensor dimensions, but the diameter of the theoretical tube around it. Well that's how a semi-conductor engineer in an actual fab plant explained it to me.

Tests which I saw showed this camera is too slow to focus on birds coming straight at you, not good for use as a sports camera......Most probably because it is. not a F2 as stated, it is f6.5 -f11.......Also not good in low light........Where am I wrong

Somewhere we need a video on polarization auto-focus, circular polarizing filters, anti-glare filters, anti-glare glass and anti-haze filters and the de-haze filter in photoshop. All these things partially overlap conceptually.

So from your video it's the same sensor same lens same body just phases detection for 300 more..... For there price I still think there's. Better cameras for the price look at fuji
There are a number of other updates I mentioned throughout the video, but yes the main difference is the addition of PDAF. I love Fuji for my own photography, but even the cheapest X series with the 100-400mm will cost more than this.
"Non-Photographers" buy DSLRs because they see professional photographers using them, and assume they must be enough for everyone ..... neglecting the fact that the Pro has $12,000 of glass stuck on the front.

@@jan-martinulvag1953 believe it or not, autofocus motors can add a lot of size. I also suspect your Dad's film camera didn't have a zoom lens, only a fixed focal length which is much easier. Bottom line is this lens on the RX10 is as small as it can be for the sensor behind it. If you want a bigger sensor, the lens will need to be scaled up. Or the lens needs to be scaled back in range, aperture and or quality.

A full frame sensor is more than 7 times bigger than a 1 inch sensor.

600mm f4??? Holy shit! That's enough reason to buy this camera already. Is there any super telephoto lens out there that comes with a body? And shoot 4k, and have fantastic EVF, and so on...and so on? Sony is gonna topple Canon and Nikon and become king of the hill.
The photos look great. The video needs to be tweaked in post to look somehow cinematic. Has a sort of videoish, plasticky look, very sharp and clean but not cinematic. Overall a great camera but the biggest downside is the price and only one card slot. You cannot use it for pro work, and for amateur is objectively too expensive. Family dads just don't go around stores throwing 1700 dollars on a camera just for the superzoom. For close shots it is just marginally better than the latest smartphones. Iphone x has that fantastic portrait in the dark feature that this camera doesn't. And doesn't also have that full frame look that renders portraits special, like with a 135 mm 1.8.

Longrider I owned the RX10 III. I am not denying this is a great camera. But what i want is to just sell all my gear and get one camera that does it all. And i don't think this camera can replace my 5d mark iv
oh no Adrian 5d4 a great camera and canon lenses !!!! the best!, but for 99% of amateur photographers the rx cameras are all you need. I have an a7r2 and both the rx100v and rx10iii. The 100 has a killer autofocus and if the new 10 is the same its gonna be awesome.

Sony, now made this camera that even a child can shoot & get better sharp images than a pro.
Now, tested & found out with drawbacks on DSC-RX10 & RX100 series:
* Will not sync with ATG Gold, Interfit S1, Jinbei HD-610, Profoto B1 w/supported transmitter
* MIS (are all on today Sony cameras)-fit all TTL transmitters: won't work on Manual
* No wireless live-view on computer
* No ATG AF Assist Beam on Sony E-Mounts (just as important as ATG's Focus Peaking)
What are your solutions, Gordon & Mark?
Again, TTL monolights work on SLT, A9, A7 series & most E-mounts with MIS' transmitters
But not on RX10 III and RX10 IV.

I'm thinking to get two of these cameras for a scientific purpose, I do not know if this will do the job by putting the two cameras at 90 degrees and recording a footage at 1000 fps can I double the number of frames if the two files will combine together? Maybe !
Are you suggesting it might be possible to combine them into a 2000fps file? I don't think that would be possible! But believe me 1000fps is already very slow when played back!
I can't watch the video, but I expect it's using computer controlled arrays to trigger them precisely. But by all means try it out and let us know how you get on!
